Ahoy, Anthony here. Thanks so much for answering my question. Your recommendation makes a lot of sense. I think that's the route I'll go down. Now to visit your back catalogue of 4x5 reviews... (It's v. odd to watch a video where the presenter is talking to me. Nice though.)

I love my Horseman 985 and I am certain that it will get to be very expensive in the near future. Why do I think so? 1. This system is smaller and lighter than a 4x5. 2. This system is cheaper ($500-$700 gets you a decent kit including 3 lenses, backs, ground glass…) 3. The 6x7 ratio is close enough to 4x5 for those that love working with this ratio on film. 4. One back gets you 8 exposures and you can go through a roll quite quickly. 5. It has all the movements you will ever need (front and back). 6. You can frame, focus (RF) and shoot handheld, if that’s what you fancy. 7. A box of 10 sheets of Portra 160 4x5 costs $50 and a box (5 rolls or 40exp.) of 120 Portra 160 is $42. 8. It’s build to last.

Out of curiosity, how good is the rangefinder? I assume it adjusts when you focus but is it bright enough? Seems like the pictures that I have seen, its a little clunky with all the frame lines transposed on it.

I exactly went this route a couple weeks ago.. Has been great so far, bought a horseman 45fa with cambo 6x7 slide back, they just slide in to the camera so you dont have to take off the ground glass. Have really liked it so far!

He hit the nail on the head. That camera was my first view camera. I also bought a Schneider 65mm lens for it. It just barely fits the camera with no movements. I bought the camera for the movements. So I ended up doing what he recommends and bought a Toyo 4X5 and putting a 6X7 back on it. With the horseman lens, this camera is still my go to camera when I need something compact. They are HARD to sell. But this camera has a small group of hard core followers. But you almost have to use the horseman lenses which is a deal breaker for me.

I'd say that one thing that Nico didn't cover in his recommendation, is that if someone isn't familiar with 4x5 shooting, there's a learning curve to it that may not be present in other options (like exposure compensation/calculation, etc), otherwise I fully agree with the idea that having a 4x5 go down to MF is the smarter move over trying to get a MF to upsize to 4x5

Very true, I considered recommending the beast Fuji GX680 but wanting to up to 4x5 made me not go that route. But yeah, 4x5 or bellows cameras add a lot of other issues. But if he wants 4x5 in the end its best to learn fast!

Thank you Nico. I have been wanting a MF view camera and I have been looking at the Topcon for a long time. The only difference is I don't want to add 4x5 to it. Ok, your video answered my questions! Thanks

Hi, just a comment on something to consider. I use a linhof technika iii 4x5 with a medium format back. Overall it’s great, but movement (up/down and sideways) are a little challenging with lenses in medium format focal length (mine is 105mm) - the nobs are hard to get to because of the hinges (arms?) which holds the plate with rails. There is lens boards which can compensate but this is additional cost - particularly with the old model I could afford. I don’t know if this is a problem for other models, but I just wanted to share this.

I actually enjoy my VHR with one cammed lens (75mm) AND the angle viewer. Without those it is doable, but highly tedious.

The horsemans are great medium format cameras. I haven’t seen the charts, but they might deliver better performance (in that size) compared to a 4x5. I agree though, a separate camera for 4x5 is the way to go I think. I wouldn’t combine the two honestly, but that’s just me.

I was considering buying a Horseman 970 6x9 for colour architecture shots, but I tried my Sinar F2 with a Horseman 6x9 film back, a Fuji 65mm f5.6 lens and bag bellows and I must say I kind of like it. Since it only uses one rail, it is rather small (for a Sinar setup, anyway). It does however, take some time to assemble it for every shot...

Amen to that. I paid $250 for my Sinar. 🙂

I can fit a Fujinon 180 300 and 400 mm on that small Horseman 985 . Horseman also have three 4x5 fieldcamera models that can use lenses from 65 to 400mm and still is very compact and light . The 4x5 adapter is also usefull for long telephoto and macro . But if I want 4x5 I would buy the Horseman 4x5 fieldcamera . The modern recent alternatives are not my cup of tea .........

Nico, I understand where you are coming from. But having both a "full size" Graphic and several Baby Graphics, I have to disagree. Breaking out the full size 4x5 is both a physical and mental hurdle, given the size, weight and overall complexity. I have come to believe that movements are vastly overrated, especially on 6x9. I have never felt the need for these on any of my Zeiss, Voigtlander, Kodak, etc. cameras. Experimenting with them on the wee Graphics was reminiscent of trying to teach a pig to sing.

Nobody who owns and loves a horseman vh family cam would ever recommend you use it for 4x5. 🤣 BUT, using it for what it WAS designed for is an absolute joy. I LOVE my VH-R. It's ridiculously capable, fun to use, and a good choice for 6x9. If you want to shoot large format, definitely, get a LF cam, but discrediting this one because it isn't a good LF cam is absurd....because it wasn't designed to be.
