Watching the movie now, I feel a little sorry for the Medjai in this scene, especially the hook man. Even though he threatened Evie, he was doing everything in his power to prevent a terrible evil from being unleashed to the point where not even being roasted alive stopped him from doing his job. Also, remember some of those men were likely Ardeth Bay's friends and brothers, which makes it even sadder.

Ironically, they were the heroes in this action scene. Their actions, while violent, were justified given the threat. And I doubt they had the patience to deal with greedy treasure hunters. Oddly, an argument can be made that the Mummy (1999) has an anti-colonial theme. Our heroes exploit a culture for wealth and prestige with no regard for the people or culture and are essentially committing grave robbery, and suffer because of their own hubris.
