Stupendous performance of an incredible masterpiece. I've played this great work a few times (I am an amateur pianist), so I'm intimately familiar with its terrors. What David Golub did here is beyond praise, musically and technically. I had the privilege of meeting him when I attended a chamber music workshop at Lincoln Center. It is tragic that he died so young; he was a rare one. At that workshop, we were coached (on the Brahsm Clarinet Trio) by Gary Hoffman, the cellist here. Another fantastic musician, excellent coach and very funny. A fond memory.

As 'alicello' states, at 5:44 Zukerman plays three up bows instead of up-down-up and you can hear the subtleties of how that changes the music in that measure if you listen closely to what Ida is playing. What amazes me is how cellist Gary Hoffman picks up on it right away and gives a glance and a smile. That causes the rest of the group to give a smile. Now that's being totally focused on what everyone in the ensemble should be doing.

God yes, really on fire!!! That's the way this movement MUST be played!(...and "these guys" know it very well) But really such a big shame it is not from the beginning :-( Breathtaking the whole quintet and one of the most beautiful compositions ever (in my opinion) by the great big white beard Master Johannes!!;-) Thanks a lot for posting it, it made me shiver!

HappyWandy457, What an overwhelming way to perform the great of greatest: Each musician fills its part as beeing Johannes himself playing. The daring tempo is simply outragious and sound is superb: What vibratos on strings and the pianist, with his superb technique (low wrists as Brahms requires) puts this ensemble on top of all. @Paules8460 I have performed this and other works of Brahms and most other chamber composers (I play viola) and the reason for not applauding between movements is that the piece isn't over yet...Also, the change in mood and key between each movement is very important and applause sort of wipes out the last note of the movement from your ear, so you are hearing the next movement as if after an interruption which was not intended.

This could have easily been a movement from one of Brahms Symphonies !!! Like Beethoven , many of Brahms so called chamber pieces contain many Symphonic elements , and Grand Heroic themes and motifs that seemingly sneeked there way into much smaller chamber pieces which forced their limited forces to absorb them !!!....

@Paules8460 your point has something butyou should think of the ones performing this. clapping between the movements may disturb and annoy them and the see and play the piece as a whole. if you interrupt them you also may break their concentration. besides, you could simply enjoy silently; when I'm sitting in concert I'm not clapping even if I enjoyed the perfomance, (that's also due to my laziness...)

@Paules8460 The current etiquette is appropriate and it should not be standard to applaud between movements.Although I have felt the same energy and need to commend musicians after such phenomenal performances as this one I think the silence serves purpose.The beauty of music comes from anticipation and build up of emotion: I think applause should model that. I would much rather engross myself in 40 minutes of music and receive an outpour of applause at the end when adrenaline is the highest

AND, these works are long, so adding to their length by allowing applause between movements makes them longer, and believe me, some concerts are planned down to the half-minute. I prefer to play without applause until the end...just the humble opinion of a viola player who has performed this piece several times.
@taviona15 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's kinda true but they surely rehearsed this piece. It's not just a matter of technically being able to play it but also a matter of interpretation and balance (who plays how loud etc)

Great Fireworks! Mr. Neubauer seems so 100% in control that it's actually a bit scary - how can you play this and hardly show a facial expression at all?
@fierywomanpacnw70045 жыл бұрын
By putting your energy into playing the viola and the music instead of making faces?
@marpre16 жыл бұрын
Yes, of course, this is because piano can't accentuate a tied note like strings can do, and this is the same figuration that strings play in 1:43 - 1:50.

Nice observation. The scherzo is intentionally written to sound like the wheels are about to fly off. That's Brahms. But still, they definitely over-rush it. The little pause/pullback by the piano at 5:42 is customary. But for the piano to have to pull back again in the next phrase to get them back to the right tempo -- that's unusual. If it were a bunch of students you'd call it a flaw but since it's Zuckerman/Kafavian etc. you have to cut them artistic slack. Plus everybody's having fun.
