Let me check this too, ok what do I want in my life? love, health, some resources so pay expenses, family, a job, sports, frequent holidays, good music to listen to. Nice food. And I want a new car. So what does the andante cantabile have that I want in life? Just music. None of the rest. Or maybe you were just being hyperbolic.

For someone who was initially gonna go to law school, then switched to music. Becoming not only a pianist. But a great composer. Thank God he did that. We have way too many lawyers, but not great composers like this. Thank You. And God bless Robert Schumann. It makes all our lives just a little better. 😀😀😀

I hope you listen to his song cycles Dichterliebe and Frauenliebe Und Leben. Read the poems first and dig into them. Also, his spectacular piano quintet, also composed in 1842. Listen to the Argerich Maisky performance here.

It's a life-changing piece of music. Schumann produced such an incredible unbroken line of masterpieces over a period of around 4 years -- song cycles, piano works, string chamber music. Even for Schumann, the piano quartet is special, an artistic peak, and it's probably the greatest piano quartet ever written. It's as close to perfect as it gets. Every phrase of every movement is inspired, the counterpoint is so brilliant, and there are gorgeous melodic lines that carry you along. This is the work of a genius at the absolute height of his powers. The coda of the finale is just so wonderful, it brings tears to my eyes. And this is a first rate performance -- it's world class players completely giving themselves in to the ensemble and making the sound greater than the sum of the parts. I especially love Sol Gabetta's playing -- it's a virtuosic part but she's so far beyond worrying about the technical difficulties, it's as if she's singing it, her sound is so wonderful.

I'm exactly the same as you - can't tire of listening to the third movement over and over again. Only discovered the Schumann piano quartet when watching a recent PBS "Now Hear This" episode on Schumann. Even my wife, although she is extremely fond of classical piano music, is complaining that I'm play the piece too frequently 😂.

The Andante Cantabile is just amazing. I cannot stop listening to that melody, which has a lot of tenderness and a bit of a feeling of resignation. The cello solo comes first, and she plays it wonderfully. I love her tender and tranquil interpretation. And Kashimoto’s violin is also amazing. But, as a violist, I love the viola solo by Gilad Karni above all. It is absolutely amazing. 16:38

I mean, I get why people only rave on about the third movement, it's fantastic of course, but that first movement is really something too if you ask me: that glowfull introduction, repeated to start the development and end the piece, that lively first theme, the slightly meandering second theme... It's all so wonderfully beautifull!

I am not familiar with this work but very glad to hear it now. This composer fell out of my favour for years because of over listening to the symphonies, the piano concerto and a few piano pieces. Now I have rediscovered the joys to be had with music other than the war horses I referred to. Schumann was a fabulous composer and is often eclipsed on the one side by Schubert and by Mendelssohn and Brahms on the other. Unfair and he stands very well on his own creations. A marvellous quartet.

there are some terrific Schumann works almost no one knows, even, like the Nachtlied for chorus and orchestra - his output is full of gems imho. (Though my own favorites are the A minor violin sonata Op.105 and the C major piano fantasy Op.17.)

I used to listen to an audio recording of this work back when I was a student at UNCSA. To see it performed, this is the first that I recall, and it is so moving! The pianist brings perfect balance with total technical and musical mastery. The violinist plays with precision, fire and freedom. The violist must have been born with the instrument under his chin and bow in his right hand! The cellist plays with the passion that can only be expressed on a cello. I'm literally stunned with this chamber group's creation!
