I decided to do a similar run through and managed to catch my neighbor in an offensive war with my second king and do a subjugation Casus Belli and make the kingdom of Bohemia. I had a couple powerful pissed off vassals but through looting I had a decently upgraded two counties.

To help deal with the difficulties in the elective succession, you might try going to your vassals and using the persuade option to sway them to your side. I haven't tried that in the new expansion, but it might work.

That's a good idea, I hadn't thought of that. I'm still trying to wrap my head around these new features. I really love being able to antagonise someone so far, it's a solid mechanic.
