So these five doctors decide to go duck hunting. While waiting, they agree to take turns when shooting. After a bit, some ducks show up... The GP gets ready to shoot, but then thinks, "Is that a duck? I'd better get a second opinion." The duck gets away. The Ob-gyn gets ready to shoot, but then thinks "What if the duck getting ready to lay? Can't do it!" The duck gets away. The psychologist gets ready to shoot, but then thinks "I know it's a duck, but does it know it's a duck?" The duck gets away. The surgeon gets ready to shoot, and BLAMM. The duck falls to the ground. He turns to the last doctor, a pathologist. "Go see if that was a duck."

I have been in health care for almost 40 (oh dear God) years; initially as an RN in an inner city trauma center, and then, for the past 26 years as a Family Practice Nurse Practitioner. I have worked with just about every branch of medicine (especially as residents) and seen the kindness, humor, ego, and, on rare occasions a**h***s. One of the most heartwarming stories I have is when I received an email from one of the Bariatric Surgeons who cared for one of my patients a year and a half earlier. The surgeon emailed that he had been going through charts to see how his previous patients were doing and was surprised to see our patient had died; he asked what had happened. I emailed back that he had killed himself when his wife left him; he did this after signing himself into the hospital for 72 hours to get help. Upon release, he shot himself. I had seen him probably 2 weeks prior to the incident and he was so thrilled about getting his life back after the surgery and had lost over 125#. I wrote how guilt ridden I felt because I knew how devastated he was and I meant to reach out to him, but got swamped, and then it was too late. The surgeon wrote back the kindest email writing about times he felt he let the patient down and sent me quite a bit of emotional support. I was so impressed he was checking on his prior patients (obviously, he does not make a penny doing so, contrary to stereotypes) but he honestly cared. And his compassion to me was something I will remember always………

Dr. Jamal I have watched a substantial number of your video's, and have thoroughly enjoyed them. Gave me a more current and freshened perspective on a number of different aspects related to education and becoming established in the practice of medicine in general and surgery in particular. I feel that your discussions are, generally speaking, oriented more towards surgery. However, you are, after all, a plastic surgeon. It would seem that a great deal of medicine, has remained unchanged, while at the same time the computer, IT has greatly impacted how students go about accessing & assimilating knowledge. Even with the enhancements gained to both teaching and learning, much still relies on the motivation and diligence of the individual to gain a solid foot hold academically. I also feel that American med school grads would still benefit by learning and applying the "scientific method". I did two fellowships in UK. But, a graduate degree in a basic science would add too many years to an already long course of study. I must tell you that my difficulty in gaining admission to med school and immediate enrollment in a Ph.D. program in clinical biochem. was the best thing that could have happened to me. Made all the difference for me to begin medical education having first completed an earned doctorate. Well, I wish you well in your business and surgical careers. It would be great if you could add some discussion on the "third" branch of the profession, there's plenty on 2 branches, namely medicine and surgery, but only a mere mention of the 3rd, that would be pathology, my area of endeavor, maybe I could gain some insight into how I fell in, back in 1980. My boy just completed int. med at R.I.Hosp/Brown U. in June; cardio. fellow now, then card electrophys fellow after. Thanks. Best Wishes.

Ain't no more "General Surgeons" in any city over 350,000 people! Ain't one in our phone book! Thoracic, gastric, abdominal (gut), twenty kinds of ortho, skeletal, sports medicine, muscular, tendon repair, etc. specialists and God forbid if like me, you need an exploratory belly and they find out (as my old deceased Cutter knew) I had a bad gall bladder and have to call in ANOTHER sturgeon while I'm on the table! Went from a "45 minute" operation to a 4 1/2 hour with me coding 3 times in recovery. 1985 co-pay (about 12%) was $34,000 with GREAT company insurance. Guy who fixed my broken back (car wreck) was head of Neurosurgery at my hospital. GREAT super-smart guy. On my follow-up visit said "It's carpenter's work, driving in screws and fitting plates."

I always felt like that about Plastics. Then I got breast cancer. They rebuilt my body and made me feel like a woman again. I so grateful for their artwork.

Please, I’m in Karachi and I have realized surgery isn’t for me... it would be nice to know about the stereotypes of those taking the internal medicine AND peads route! And once again, your videos are amazing! Glad to have had them as A resource

it’s strange that we’re from totally different countries but stereotypes are so similar

Funnily enough, the chief of neurosurgery at my university genuinely has a god-complex. But almost all of the neurosurgical residents are totally down to earth and cool

Great video. In my experience many people choose gen surgery because they intend to fellowship in their speciality but gen surgery is the only way to get there. It's a stepping stone, NOT an easy route.

Neurosurgeons are quit more cool despite that they earn a lot but they hardly get the time to spend it

When you're a hammer everything looks like a nail. "Doctors" might like surgery and patients like pain meds. Nutriton and behavior focus is boring but powerful medicine.
