Its not always to say that all nurses know less than doctors with medical knowledge, some nurses study extra not to become a doctor but to have the knowledge (i am one of them, i love to acquire extra knowledge thats outside my scope of practice but i am curious and want to know and understand and to avoid unnecessary paging) Moral of the story: be nice, be kind, remember where you came from and all medical professionals are equal and are needed. Never be an enemy to a nurse. They will save your butt. Not only that, nurses will manage you up which is really nice when you are introduced to your patients. Nurses know 10000% more about the patients then you do, from their daily living activities, medical history, current health status (literally down to the hour), and family members. MDs usually only know the patient's by their disease and health issues, that's it! On average for a week of hospital stay, doctors spend up to 1hr total with the patients. The rest is managed by the medical staff. A medical diagnosis is only 20% of the whole picture, it takes case management, pharmacy, medical billing, nurses, and social workers to complete the admission and discharge. Ever heard of nurses are the arms, legs, eyes, and ears of the doctors?
@donmaanao72795 жыл бұрын
Very negative towards the docs. Obviously docs have more patients to manage and they cant focus solely on one particular patient for hrs unless the care for one is greater than all other, like in the case of near death. Nurses are given orders by docs so no a nurse doesnt know 10000% more. Sure the nurse can observe the results of those orders but they must chart it so the staff can see whats going on. You know who the real savior is in the hospital? Not the nurses. The janitors. Everyone relies on the janitors from the use of the bathroom for personal needs and the flipping the patients room.
@donmaanao72795 жыл бұрын
Bc patient care is only half the battle. Hospital wide care is what medical insurances truly care about and that includes a clean and managed infrastructure
@hehehehfun49385 жыл бұрын
@@donmaanao7279 I agree with the janitor being the savior but this isnt the discussion for it. This video is about how docs should interact with nurses. The hierarchy behaviors from docs and administrators are some of the most toxic cultures in healthcare. This goes for NP as well. This isnt a negativity towards docs, i can use a totally different tone and language if I want to form an attack, Trust me! This is a wake up call for future docs watching the video and reading the comments. In terms of nurses know more about the patient status is 100% accurate. You cant compare the education of a nurse to a MD. MD arent trained to care for patients, they are there to treat diseases. Same for the nurses. Two different professions provide two different kind of care....

Great video! :) I also commented on your previous video (Do not go to medical school if this is you). I'm a psychiatrist so I've been through a lot of the same working through my earlier years as a junior doctor/resident. The only thing I want to add is this: Sexual harassment is rife in certain medical specialties, especially in male dominated surgical fields. Female residents are often scared to speak up to avoid ruining their career. This is something I wish I'd knew before doing medicine. I had to contend with some sexually inappropriate co-workers in my time but they're not too bad. But as a psychiatrist, I also see other fellow doctors who are traumatised by their experience. So always be your guard, get good supervision (regular), and join a union. You can never be too careful.

Coming from a nurses perspective (as well as my own experience)... when doctors and nurses work well together it makes a huge difference in care. I do work with some nurses that page about things that are trivial and act as ifs the end of the world if a potassium level is 3.2 and needs to be replaced. There’s a knee jerk reaction that may stem from a lack of knowledge or a lack of critical thinking or a lack of empowerment. Most of us will just add to our scut list for when the residents are out of the OR. Communication is key but also respect. I once paged the surgeon because a patient had absent breath sounds to the left lung field, a little bit of a reflexive cough when turning side to side and the SpO2 which was normally 96-98% range on room air was now 94-95%. I knew he had cancer and that it was metastatic and knew the rest of the PMHx. He was afebrile and otherwise totally vitally stable. No CP no SOB although due to the locations of the CA wasn’t getting out of bed to determine if he had SOBOE. I didn’t get far enough in the CT scan history to see that there were lung Mets when I was first coming in for the day, never took care of this patient before). Anyways I called the surgeon, asked for a chest X-ray and just for good measure an NP swab. I had to convince him to get it and he gave me a lot of attitude. Apparently absent breathe sounds over an entire lung field wasn’t concerning. Anyways paged twice more to advocate for the CXR and he finally said yes. CXR was done and I got a panicky phone call from radiology saying there was a massive pneumothorax. Thoracic got consulted and did a bedside CT. I saw the surgeon later and he was like oh yea he has lung mets, to which I said “oh yea I knew he had Mets, didn’t get to read the chest CT results from 3 months ago to see there were lung Mets (risk factor for a pneumo)”. Anyways he was all like “how do you not know he had lung Mets?!? He’s your patient”. I never said this, but I should have told him that I shouldn’t have had to convince him to get the CXR if he knew the pt had lung Mets, that based on what I was telling him when I paged he should have seen right away that there was an indication to do the test. Anyways I think the moral of the story is that nurses, just like doctors, are sometimes good/bad at communicating and sometimes have good/bad critical thinking skills sometimes. If the surgeon had communicated better with me and worked through the issue with me or taken time to listen the CT would have been done hours sooner. Thankfully the pt wasn’t in any sort of respiratory distress and after pleurodesis he finally got his CT out and hasn’t had any other issues. I still struggle with that surgeon still at times just with how he approaches things (told a patient he would take out her NGT which is something the nurses do... then he never came back to do it and the pt went another day with the NGT and the pt was really disappointed). But I think things have improved since the pneumothorax incident to some degree because at the end of the day it was a good catch and the patient did ok.

I am a nurse and i have never paged a doctor more because they have gotten on my bad side. I only page doctors to notify them of a change in my patients condition or to request orders. If a physician got on my "bad side" it would probably because they were being an asshole and even then i would just brush it off and continue working. I've never seen nurses page doctors more because they don't like them. If anything they page them less because it means interacting with them less. Maybe doctors think this is how nurses behave? That just sounds very petty. That part of the video just rubbed me the wrong way. I like that he said we can be your best friends and we really can. We are a great resource especially to newer doctors. When you get on our bad side we are still a great resource because we put our patients first and want to provide the best care we can. Of course there is always exceptions but this video makes it sound like we behave one of two ways and it's just not right.

As a clinical (hospital) pharmacist, it was interesting to me how many of these things applied to my job as well. Sure, the hours aren’t always quite as long, but on call commitment and the sense of duty to the patient can often keep you at work longer than you are meant to be, affecting your work life balance (especially if you also factor in post-graduate qualifications and having to fit study time for those in your schedule alongside work) . Plus, the different specialities (“something for everyone”) and the knowledge aspect (going narrower and deeper, realising that you’ve only scratched the surface) is something I come across every day. I’ve specialised in oncology for 5 years now, and I often feel I’ve forgotten so much of my “general medicine” knowledge, like cardiology or diabetes; at the same time, I feel like I’ve still only scratched the surface of what there is to know about cancer... And of course, being in oncology has meant facing death and has definitely changed my attitude towards it; it has also made me feel grateful every day that my parents (one in her 60s, the other in his 70s) are alive and well and healthy, given that I see patients much younger than them in my day-to-day practice.

As a nursing student, I want to add on because I've seen a lot of RESIDENTS make obvious, horrible mistakes. LISTEN TO YOUR NURSE. Your nurse spends much more time with your patient than you do. If they say they are uncomfortable with a patient's condition and want you to see them, it's not because they are bugging you with "trivial things." Nurses have A LOT of medical knowledge as well, so if they want you to come see a patient LISTEN TO THEM. In my peds clinical, my nurse preceptor was paging the MD Resident all shift to come look at our patient because she was in clear respiratory distress. The resident didn't take us seriously, and continued with the plan of care. It wasn't until the patient STOPPED BREATHING AND HAD TO BE BAGGED before the MD (AND HIS TEAM) acknowledged the acuity of our patient's condition. BTW this was a 6 month old! That is just one example. I've also seen MDs completely forget about meeting with a patient when they've told us they will. I've seen Residents yank on umbilical cords causing the entire placenta to be left in a mother! I've seen them ignore serious lab results, and even misdiagnose patients. Nurses aren't idiots. They're not trying to bug you and get on your nerves. They understand the pathophys too, and they are more familiar with how it actually manifests on patients. Don't write them off. We need a culture of mutual respect and teamwork.

As a nurse, even if I didn’t personally like a doctor (which would only be because the doctor has acted rudely toward me in the past), I would never page just to get back at them. I barely have time to get everything done during a shift so it’s silly to think nurses just have all this free time to be hatching vindictive plans. I only page multiple times if a patient is on my back about a particular issue, important order clarification, or if a serious matter regarding patient is not being addressed. So I recommend to all doctors and future doctor watching this video that you always act professionally. Even if you are stressed and maybe not in the best mood, do not bite off the nurses head for reaching out to you even if you think the page is trivial and stupid. We’re all in it for the end goal which is great patient care!

Hi there :) idk about your situation but usually there is always a way to change and adjust your career/job there are many people out there who work 8n totally different fields from what they first studied for ;)
@DrDBoz5 жыл бұрын
During your time of studying medicine for sure you will lose your passion. It's a long and hard study. But worry not. We are all human after all. The point is... To do it or not. If you really want to do it there must be almost nothing else for you to do. It must mean a lot. Think about one thing. The number one thing that matters is health. If one is not healthy then one can't do anything. So... You will be dealing with like the most important aspect of existence. Life itself. If you realise that then nothing else will make you happy as a professional. Prepare for a change in your soul. This has to do with death, suffering and the paranoia of patients and their families. You must never ever panic. Keep calm, do your best and never look back. Prepare for a nurse to teach you the prctical basics as a junior doctor cause specialists got no time for this. Social skills are a must if you want to be special. It will make people need you specifically. It will make you do things that your less talkative colleagues will never do. The patients will love you and stare at you like mindless zombies. You will also need that if you want to become a businessman or a politician later on. You won't need it in med school though. Prepare to be a boss even as a junior doctor because you are a doctor. End of story. Most people around you will wait for your orders and you will have to be extra decisive and willing. And older doctors can't really tell you anything bad cause guess what we are all doctors anyway and there is a mutual respect. Keep in mind that medicine is not a science. It is a profession and an art. Practically you are put there as a salesman for the pharmacy companies and occasionally you become a true artist with your hands and mind. All that come with an usually good income.
@mria5245 жыл бұрын
As a graduate nurse, I have been encouraged to page doctors for any deviations or changes with the patients' care, just so we can "cover" ourselves from professional liability, e.g. paging to let the doctor know that the pt refused "frusemide", and knowing that the doctor wont be able to help you with that sounds unnecessary but from a nursing perspective can get us into trouble from management. I also feel the nursing profession in general carries a heavy amount of responsibility, compared to doctors- example, it would be the nurse's fault for giving a patient potassium replacements that they no longer need, and instead, becomes dangerously hyperkaelemic. It would all be wrong to say that the responsibility lies with the doctor, as they are after all, the people who have prescribed this medication. Unless it is otherwise escalated to the doctor for an order to be ceased, the responsibility will fall back on the nurse even though it was the doctor's mistake in the first place. Long story short, we page doctors for what we think are important, although it may be overlooked as unimportant sometimes, it is only to cover our license, not to make doctor's work life harder.

That sounds insulting for nurses. We don't even have time to pee, and take lunch break, but we make sure our patients pee and eat. Even patients yell at us and curse us because doctors refuse to give stronger pain med. Not to mention, manager gives us unreasonable patient load, but complains when we have to work overtime due to providing high quality patient care. How the heck do we have time to make doctors look bad? If anything patients lash out on nurses when they cannot get what they want from the doctors

In addition, a good portion of concrete information in the form of full scientific studies may be blocked by obscenely expensive pay walls. Thereby ensuring the basic ignorance of the consumer. Most people will quite researching in nutrition journals if they have to pay a few hundred dollars for a few studies.

Being a really good doctor is important to being a really good psychiatrist. Take rotations you’ll never get to take again. I think this is good advice in all specialties.

To my colleagues and the new generation in the comments announcing their medical school acceptance, congratulations, but also please, please remember your humility upon getting your license. Excluding myself I’ve only seen a handful of doctors treat nurses with respect. Because nurses and other hospital staff are so hardworking, our jobs are actually made a lot easier than what they used to be. It actually seriously pisses me off to see how arrogant so many doctors can be. While we have worked hard to get where we are that does not give us any right to look down on others. I wish Med schools start adding that to their course list. I personally find many nurses to be far more hardworking than us during a daily shift, despite the fact that they do not get the same level of respect we get. The treatment they receive doesn’t make any sense. As we progress in our career we’re going to receive a lot of attention and status. Please do not let that affect the way you treat others, both hospital staff and your friends/families. At the end of the day, you are first and foremost a human. Please never forget the humility you were born with.
