I have depression and social anxiety and generalized anxiety and ADD so a good work life balance is extremely necessary for me. I've been interested in psychology since I was about 11 and I love digging deep into peoples thoughts and feelings. Small talk is lame, I wanna know how someone feels and what I can do to help

If it can reassure you I did a traineeship with a great child psychiatrist and she had a lot of anxiety, but still made it and does her job super well. Of course, she worked hard on developing balance within herself to heal the most she could of her anxiety. If you’re gonna get through medecine you have to be balanced mentally, or else it’s gonna be extremely difficult, but you can do it! Moral of the story, having gone through a mental problem can only help you to do your job better in psychiatry!

Woah cool I have anxiety, social anxiety, depression and adhd too!!!! And I want to become a psychiatrist too!
I will say that it will likely come up in interviews that they ask why psychiatry instead of psychology. I was warned about this as well when I made it clear in my personal statement that I want to practice psychiatry. To help with this you can shadow a psychologist and medical doctors to make sure that psychiatry is the right path for you and not something like clinical psychology.
@Magzillas3 жыл бұрын
Finishing my psych residency next month. Can't disagree with anything here. I personally have no regrets at all; I love being a psychiatrist, and you really feel like you're accomplishing something when you see patients get better or even just express their appreciation that someone is willing to listen to them. Definitely not for everyone, but for those who thrive on it, I don't think there's ever been a better time to get into the field. Work/life balance was excellent in residency; most hours I worked in a week was 62 (after medicine months of intern year), and that was during a rare two-call week. My hours per week during PGY-4 has never exceeded 45. The work rarely becomes boring; as the video suggests, you can see "depression" a hundred times and approach it a hundred different ways. Some diagnoses and situations can be frustrating, but that's hardly unique to psychiatry, and one difference in our field is that you're pretty consistently leaving work by 5 pm and have most of your weekends to yourself to decompress. As for the job prospects...I'm *still* getting at least 5 e-mails/phone calls a day from recruiters. The salary has been steadily climbing as demand increases and social stigma falls away. I won't showboat my "fresh out of residency" salary, but I'll be getting paid a pretty bonkers amount for an 8-5 no-call job where I primarily *teach* psychiatry to FM and IM residents. That's where the demand has landed us these days. Great field; check it out.

For the people bringing down psychiatry as a field- I’m sorry that you have had negative experiences with it. However, I’d like to share mine. I am a teenager with very severe ADHD and Generalized Anxiety. I started seeing a psychiatrist when I was 8. When I was 8, I had meltdowns on the daily, debilitating sensory issues, and was unable to function socially or academically. I was diagnosed and began taking medication. I also saw my therapist regularly in sessions where we learned how to name and regulate my emotions. This, frankly, changed my life. It marked the difference between having meltdowns on the daily to having them less and less, being able to understand and control them. Between feeling lost in a world of social rules I couldn’t understand and learning from them, understanding to a point where I could finally have healthy, long-term friendships. Between not being able to focus on my work at all and learning time management to the point where I am incredibly proficient at it. Not only was this because of “poison and an imaginary label,” this was because my psychiatrist and the people around me taught me how to understand my brain, and then control it. I would not be where I am today without this field. Heck, I don’t know where I’d be. Most likely, I’d still be around where I was at 8. I’d be having meltdowns on the daily, being penalized in a world full of social rules I didn’t understand, and falling deeper and deeper into a state of self-hatred due to this obstacle I could not get through without psychiatry’s aid. I want to be a psychiatrist because I want kids like me to understand that they aren’t alone, that their experiences aren’t unnatural, and that no matter what that is (and we will discover that together) they do have a pathway to success. That pathway won’t always include medication. But sometimes medication will mark the difference between an anxious, unsocial mess and a functional member of society like it often does for me. So I’m sorry you’ve had negative experiences with the field. Please don’t assume it’s that way for everyone.

Psychiatry deserves more respect. It is one of the least respected medical specialties and for no good reason. Mental illness affects around 51 million people in the United States alone. Why do we choose to neglect mental health? Is the brain and its maintenance not important? Psychiatry has come along way since its barbaric beginnings and we know much more about psychopathology than we once did. Many studies have been done. To prove my point, there was this study done in 2017; the largest MRI study to date. For the life of me, I do not recall the exact amount of subjects who participated but it was well over 1,000. Most of the subjects had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and, across these individuals, a pattern not otherwise seen within the subjects who do not suffer from the disorder. Diminished gray matter in both the frontal and temporal regions in the brain. Gray matter is directly associated with inhibition and emotional regulation. As technology continues to evolve, I have no doubt there will come a test(s) at some point that will be able to concretely confirm many different forms of psychiatric conditions. Psychotropic medication has its applications; there are many who cannot function without them, this is a given, though there are those (depending on the condition) who can be treated without. The moment we acknowledge this, we will come to see that people are much more than the ineligible scribblings on an Rx pad..more than a dollar to be made. I want to become a psychiatrist and I have no shame in admitting this. Respect psychiatry!

Psychiatry deserves zero respect. It’s a pseudoscience that causes more problems than it solves. Psychiatrists don’t even know exactly how drugs effect the brain, hence the trial/error approach they use to douse patients with dangerous drugs.

The other Podiatry schools ay UK, US, Australia, New Zealand pero mahal yan halos 1M per year ang tuition kesa sa Pakistan.

I'm currently aiming to be a psychologist but I'm confused honestly. Psychiatry seems to be very interesting and gives me a lot more control over how the treatment goes. It also gives me a much closer relationship with the patients and allows me to meet their needs in a much better way. I went to a psychiatrist for treatment, he also referred me to a psychologist for psychotherapy, both said different things regarding therapy and that just confused me more. This leads me to believe maybe it's better to be a psychiatrist. Honestly just being a psychologist feels like a handicap. I'm in the same boat, except for me its the medical school part. I'm scared I'm gonna fall in medical school, I did a lot of research back in like 7th grade, and medical school seems like it could possibly be the death of me or give me depression. Now I'm a freshmen in high school, debating over if I should go for psychologist or psychiatrist. I'm leaning more towards psychiatry right now, but I'm scared I'll fall in med school and have nothing to catch me.

@dedopest33052 жыл бұрын
a female thing bro? Nah. Psychiatry demands mental resilience, just like any other medical field, you'll have to deal with extreme mental burden yourself such as the constant views you see. I remember this poor girl that just got into the emergency department and one of her first encounters was a slaughtered woman. In psychiatry you see the same, people's life falling due to extreme mental illness. And don't hate me for this, but i don't think a teenage girl that's living life comfortably will manage to forebear such obstacles just because she's interested in "the mind" and "emotions". Well they should try anyways.

Just an fyi if it wasn’t already posted - Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, and New Mexico - In those states, appropriately trained psychologists can be granted the right to prescribe medications. Patients are able to work with one health care provider for psychological testing, psychotherapy, and medication management, if needed. LOTS of additional training and education of course and they they have pas a national exam.

Why? Psychiatrists are well-paid criminals who destroy people's bodies and brains with the drugs they give them. FBI statistics have documented that 60% of the mass shootings in this country were committed by those on psychiatric drugs. Brain damage from these drugs make you PERMANENTLY depressed, can cause you to try or succeed in killing yourself, and even cause you to kill others, even if you would never have done such things before you started taking these drugs. Psychiatrists routinely give these drugs to people without telling them how potentially deadly they are. If they told people, people would never take them and all the psychiatrists would have to find another way to make all that money they make. As I said, they're well-paid criminals.

In 🇺🇸 USA or Canada 🇨🇦, Most Medical specialty takes 4 years duration. Psychiatrist specialty takes 3 years duration in the 🇺🇸 USA.

Clinical psychologists & clinical neuropsychologists are actually able to prescribe psychotropic medications in 6 states (i.e., Louisiana, New Mexico, Illinois, Idaho, Iowa, & Colorado), plus the U.S. territory of Guam, the Department of Defense (DoD), the Indian Health Service (IHS), & the Public Health Service (USPHS). This has been the case since the early-mid 90s. In the U.S., one needs a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) to be a clinical psychologist or clinical neuropsychologist, NOT a master's. After receiving their doctorates, they MUST obtain their post-master's degree in clinical psychopharmacology (MSCP) to prescribe. Furthermore, clinical psychologists do more than just psychotherapy. They also perform psychological assessments, personality assessments, & intelligence testing, which are ALL unique only to this field. They also conduct a lot of research within psychological science. Clinical neuropsychologists receive advanced training in brain-behavior relationships. They're more focused on neurological illnesses & injuries (e.g., epilepsy, TBI, multiple sclerosis, dementia) & how they impact the brain and one's cognitive functions. They perform neuropsychological assessments, diagnose neurocognitive disorders, conduct cognitive interventions (e.g., neuromodulation, neurorehabilitation, cognitive training methods, exercise), use neuroimaging techniques, & conduct research in neuropsychological science. It's important for people to have a better understanding of psychology & its many subfields & specialties.

Psychology and psychiatry are pseudoscience. They do not diagnose neurological disease and have nothing to do with science and medicine. They tell people how to behave, that is all they do. Neurologists diagnose neurological diseases not psychologists or psychiatrists.
@NeuroPsychBrain11 ай бұрын
@@capresti3537I respect your beliefs regarding the fields of clinical psychology, clinical neuropsychology, & psychiatry & I'm not here to persuade you. However, I will factually correct your statement. I'm in the field of clinical neuropsychology & we absolutely assess, diagnose, & treat neurological illnesses & injuries. That's a key part of our clinical training & education. Moreover, we must know our neuroanatomy & neurophysiology & it's extremely critical that we do. We often work with & get consults from neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, & primary care physicians. Regarding clinical psychologists & psychiatrists, you're correct in that they do not focus on neurological aspects of a patient b/c they are two separate fields, but have a lot of overlap.
@capresti353711 ай бұрын
@@NeuroPsychBrain What i said are not beliefs they are facts. I also work in the medical field and you are wrong. Neuropsychologists do not diagnose neurological diseases this is the work of Neurologists. Neuropsychologists like general psychologists and neuropsychiatrists or general psychiatrists tell people how to behave. These are not medical sciences and is not based on science rather only beliefs. Do neuropsychologists diagnose Myotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease?. Of course not, there are scientific tests to diagnose and confirm these diseases and this is done by Neurologists not psychologists and psychiatrists. Of course some neurological diseases can cause behavioral problems and once fixed by a Neurologist the behavioral problem goes away. But you psychologists insist that the behavioral problem is separate from the disease of the body and is in itself a disease. This is delusional.
