Start with a quality shift kit in the AOD. Trans-Go makes a nice kit. With the O/D you can get away with a little more rear gear. 1st gear in the AOD’s are horrible. Maybe a small stall converter too if you want. Call me paranoid but I always run a big trans cooler and plumb it separate from the radiator.

Have you tried putting the shifter back into first as soon as you make the 1-2 shift? After that when you are ready to make the 2-3 shift you just put it into drive to achieve the 2-3 shift. Or maybe the TV cable needs adjusting?????

I have an 84 vert with a 5 speed and an 89 GT with an AOD. Both were purchased as AOD cars. I converted the 84 to a 5 speed. I gotta tell you that my 89 with 3k stall converter will really get it. To match the performance of the AOD with the manual, I have to be really hard on the clutch, trans, etc. An AOD with a stall (And good tires) is a force to be reckoned with from a dig.
@paulnoone81034 жыл бұрын
im not biased either way even though i have a c4 , but one thing you would not identify on the dyno is the power output 700-1000ft above sea level in comparison to the c4 run at 600ft below. Altitude will make a difference.
@black88coupe4 жыл бұрын
If I were to have built the car from scratch with the intention of racing it I would have gone with a c4. I’m using the AOD because A- Thats what was in the car and B- I like the challenge. Density Altitude is a MAJOR factor with how this particular car runs at the strip given the nature of how stock the motor is. My favorite times of racing season is the beginning and the end since thats when we see the best conditions for quick ET’s. 👍

No it’s not stock. It’s been modified in a few different ways. I’ll list the mods: 1- 4,200 stall converter 2- SilverFox fixed pressure manual valvebody with a trans brake. 3- slight mods to the oiling system just to add a little extra insurance against premature wear and tear. 4- Solid input shaft. Ran it this way for quite awhile. Recently added a better gear set out of a 4r70w trans. Unfortunately, We haven’t really gotten a chance to take maximum advantage of the better 4r7Ow gearing as other things were giving us problems. Hoping to reap those rewards in 2022. Hope this helps.

It’s not impossible for a stock 5.0 valvetrain to run in the 12s under the right conditions (at or below sea level air).

The car ran it's best pass (12.68) with 4.30's. It has 4.56's now in preparation for future upgrades. It does have 1.7 Cobra rockers and I also did replace the worn- out stock valve springs because after 120,000 miles and 6,000rpm shifts- the valves were floating. The car went 12.89 with stock E7 heads/ intake spacer/ electric water pump/ roller rockers. When I put on the modified E7 heads it went a best of 12.68.
@young119844 жыл бұрын
Love seeing stock engines being optimized to their full potential, did that to mine before deciding to go turbo but its still a stock long block with good valve springs (due to valve float above 5psi) roller rockers and billet timing set (stock iron cam gear cracked and caught it having erratic timing). Going back and watch all the videos on the car later today, likely going to do my dads 85 GT build similar.

ProM 77 mass air system, 36lb injectors, to a Holley 75mm throttle body. 3.73 gears, factory for awhile World Class T5 but upgraded to a new set of internals that we're hardened. The heads were shaved as well and the compression came in right at 11.1 Of course I range race gas or some kind of booster to let it run hard. I ran 11.70's on motor and over also ran a beat of 10.49 at 132mph!! The car could cut 1.40's 60ft on pump NA gas!

I was a little disappointed....I was under the impression I was going to see some freak stocker running 12’s. A buddy of mine had an ‘85 coupe with MAF conversion, Longtube headers, a B-cam and 3.73’s(w/T5) and would go 12.70’s all day on ET Streets. No tune, no other engine mods, full interior, no weight loss shenanigans. I drove the car and it was a nice driver. I was hoping this was going to be something like that but with an AOD. A transbrake and super-loose converter don’t exactly qualify an AOD as “stock”.
@black88coupe5 жыл бұрын
Carport Shenanigans The motor is the “stock” element. Everything else has been modified- true. ALSO, Keep in mind it’s an AOD which doesn’t have the same gearing as a T5. AOD is also heavier and takes more HP to turn. T5 is naturally going to be faster all other things being equal. Your buddies motor has also been upgraded. This motor is stock except for Cobra rockers and an intake spacer.

@Stick Man’s Garage, I would agree except your version of “stock” is HIGHLY modified. Let’s see the same feat without a transbrake, built trans, super loose converter, full suspension and with a full interior...can’t be done..:otherwise it would be a “freak”. Would you be a little disappointed if I made and titled a video similarly but you watched just to find out I was spraying a 175 shot from top to bottom?

You’re taking all the fun out of this, man. The engine is stock. It’s a common term. The rest is self explanatory. There is little to no space to get your attention/explain the details in a thumbnail. No one tried to dupe you. And we aren’t selling anything. This is drag racing. This car is being maximized for that purpose. And we’re sharing for the many who can appreciate & learn from it. Would you feel better to know I have both an efi & a carbed Mustang that both ran in the 12s that were even more “stock” than this car, in terms of interior, suspension, an oem clutch in both, and more? I didn’t think so. You win
@stickmansgarage94525 жыл бұрын
Oh, and let’s not overlook that cars make more power racing at/near or in below sea level conditions. Some guys chose to build more hp to compensate while others reduce weight and/or invest in a suspension that will serve them well now and in the future, when they build an 11 or 10 second combo

@stickmansgarage94524 жыл бұрын
That depends on many factors. Street car? Street/strip? Drag only? Have you eliminated the convertor lockout on 3rd gear? What cam? What rear gears? Just to name a few

@@stickmansgarage9452 cam,heads stock edelbrock intake with Holley 600 vacuum secondary, bbk headers, 373 gears ,coilovers subframe connectors. Tci trans has a stock stall. Detent cable works on the carb. Tci tech's told me it don't need to be connected because of the valve body it has. I want a low 13sec street car quite to beat those ls crap trucks. Oh and new nitrous Express system
@stickmansgarage94524 жыл бұрын
The nitrous could be the biggest factor in all of this. But first, Agent AOD ran low 13s in similar trim (4.10 gears) with a 2600 stall convertor and was street driven. Even to the track. It’s hard to know what your comfort level would be driving a loose convertor, but for best all around performance - getting the engine into the power band quickly and dealing with a nitrous shot of 100-150 hp - while maintaining decent street manners - I’d say 2500 stall minimum. 3500 maximum if you’re aggressive and mostly drive local. I’d consult the convertor guys about how much nitrous certain models will withstand - both from a stall perspective and if the unit will stay together. A cheap convertor can live naturally aspirated, but that’s risky with the nitrous. Be careful about activating the juice with less than full throttle (secondaries wide open) and under 3000 rpm with the 3.73 gears. You may have to change the vac secondary spring to make them open sooner on the juice. I’d feel better if you had a double pumper. I’m guessing it’s a Performer/P-RPM intake?

While people spending $1,100 making their blocks with forged pistons, we pulling from junkyards and installing v2's on a pure stock block running 15-18psi with nothing more than changing injectors and turning the distributor. Hey stick man, i think those gt40, gtp heads are shocking to have the chambers over to one side that much. I think the E7,s are better. Even if the iintake ports are smaller, i can still have bigger valves. VHSIm also about to kindy shape my E6 heads, i can make the chambers now i want them. These are for mi XR 8 ute. Why is every one talking about the gt40 ugly heads., i thought only Gm did stupid things like that. What do you think. Mike
@stickmansgarage94523 жыл бұрын
I think all iron oem sbf heads don’t get enough credit. The E7 may be comparatively small, but they’re balanced. Hard to beat up on the GT40s for their time. Technology has come a long way since then.
@patrickf46922 жыл бұрын
I flowed them all in the same day on a calibrated machine. E6 124 IN volume--Flowed 154/116 E7 124 IN volume-Flowed 162/124 GT40 150 IN volume-Flowed 200/150 There is absolutely NO COMPETITION for which is the undisputed best late model head.
@patrickf46922 жыл бұрын
I know it's a old comment.....but so flagrantly wrong about all the heads mentioned and conclusion met... I own multiple sets of all these heads, and still have a new in box set of GT40 Cobra that were marketed as GT40 "high flow" iron heads. I don't think you understand the differences clearly.....I'll keep this short. No SBF head has ever moved the "chamber" and certainly not by an inch....Think about that for a sec...GT40P did move the spark plug angle, the heads were an attempt to clean up the last SBF while it still sold very well deep into Overhead Valve replacement. Now, as to your assessment on E6 heads...The valves are measurable deeper in the chamber making the shrouding problem that much worse. Reason the true flat top pistons were not compatible with other heads without notches......The swirl concept was not a strength for performance, it was for cleaner smog. Ford disagreed SO much it was a one year Mustang option. The 85 GT heads were E5 castings...exactly the same as 87+ HO E7's with a smaller chamber hence production number change..... E6 combined the smog swirl, terrible shrouding, and abysmal flow. Data point just to show how bad....1986 Capri (mercury's mustang) switching ONLY stock E6's for stock E7''s gained 34 RWHP I only did a after dyno for tuning and nobody could believed the E7 a real performance upgrade, only compared to a truly terrible design....That's why NOBODY uses them... I attached the intake volumes and flow rates above to show not only how much things improved, but why the GT40 series of heads ARE so sought after. My buddies 85 GT Switched out his E5 heads and GT 4bbl for stock GT40 heads and stealth intake. So he started with better heads than E6's. and picked up an unreal 78 HP.... Imagine the gain over your personal favorite E6. If these sound unrealistic, go look on message boards and see how over and over its repeated. This should solve the problem you've experienced but probably not stated about "Why is my E6 headed UTE getting outrun by model T's? You're welcome, you now have Ported wheel chaulks......that don't carry scrap value. I really hope you didn't pay for them....

@Waltergoodboy5 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? Did this car roll off the assembly line running 12s? You had to add after market parts and remove factory ones to achieve this....that is the definition of MODIFY! I'm using the definition of stock 99.9% of people use. It's ok to title the video " slight mods to get 12s out of an 85 GT". just like my girlfriend has stock B cup tits but the silicone makes the stock skin into DD ones
@stickmansgarage94525 жыл бұрын
Talking about power to weight and traction dude, not your girls plastic surgery. (You accept that modification but not these? Very open minded.) The oem hp rating of the 85 and 87-93 5.0 is plenty to make a stock Mustang run well into the 13s, and even into the 12s in reasonable air, with traction and a good driver. That was established in the 1980s. By more than one of us. Magazine & factory performance tests of that era rarely reflected a cars true potential. And I never paid good money to race my car & spin the tires. I paid for traction & a timeslip. So using slicks or good dot tires was a wise approach. Hell, it made me modestly famous for a good 10 minutes. And while I love a good statistic, I politely disagree with your 99.9% and how they use the term “stock.” My experience completely disagrees. Guess I know all the wrong racers
@Waltergoodboy5 жыл бұрын
