Ghost Rider rides once more. Johnny Blaze is back at the helm for the 50th anniversary of Ghost Rider at Marvel comics, which promises to take the character "back to basics." With a focus on the comic's horror roots can Benjamin Percy and Cory Smith ignite new interest in Blaze? Is it a 50th anniversary without the other riders such as Danny Ketch or Robbie Reyes? Does the story deliver on the horror it promises? Find out here on Casually Comics!

What if Johnny was able to keep him living in a more-or-less Earthlike life instead of continued damnation, but only as long as he remained trapped in the fraudulent Suburbia, and once he rejected it, Crash sank back into unmitigated brimstone and fishhooks? Honestly if I didn’t know how wandavision ended and the Mephesto theory was still valid, I would’ve thought that this is the same town that Wanda and Vision were staying in and Mephesto just uses the same town with a different name to mess with traumatized heroes.

I feel like Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch have a similar relationship to Barry Allen and Wally West in that while yes, Johnny and Barry were the original and the most iconic versions of the characters the fact that Danny and Wally had such long, well remembered tenures after them also places it in a position where the two characters need to exist in some kind of equilibrium. Not discounting the other Ghost Riders I feel like Johnny and Danny have to always find some way to coexist as Ghost Rider, almost as if the two of them are like a heroic duo like how Peter Parker and Miles Morales have had to find a way to share the Spiderman name. Also Ghost Rider standing up in a cloud of smoke saying "Who did this, who caged me here?" Is one of the most legit intimidating superhero moments I've seen in a long time.

I quite enjoyed it. I like Danny Ketch but Johnny Blaze will always be the Ghost Rider to me. I've always really appreciated the horror element in Ghost Rider comics. I recall a storyline in the original run from the 1970's. In which he'd been captured and the plan was to turn Johnny Blaze into some kind of half man/half motorcycle. Where his legs were removed and his torso was permanently attached to the bike. It was something that really stuck with me after first reading it as a child. I've still got the comic somewhere around here I think. I thought Johnny Blaze was even cool after he quit being Ghost Rider. Back in the early 1990's when he had a shotgun that shot hellfire and his hair was red for some reason.

Robbie Reyes was the best! He was from my hometown, East LA, he was also not a generic, “I joined a gang because I needed to,” storyline either. He was a regular kid who took care of his younger brother. Worked at a mechanic shop and raced to make some extra money. Best Legacy character in Marvel if not runner up if not Top 3 only behind Morales and Khan. Really wish they did more with him. Glad they are finally doing something with him but to be Frank, Jason Aaron, gave him a soft retcon which I am not a fan of. [x]

I enjoy the mixing of horror in and Ghost Rider can easily do it, but nothing really stood outside of expected horror tropes. Nothing surprising sadly. Ghost Rider has always been one of my favorites as I came to it randomly in the middle of a storyline, when I was a kid. Ghost Rider #44 in the middle of a Midnight Sons story, with Danny Ketch as the Rider, the cover is what grabbed me. Anyway I feel this is more of a wait and see.

Very much enjoyed this issue. My only complaint is that I really wish we got to truly finish the Ghost Rider arc that was started in 2019. Blaze as the King of Hell, Ketch as the Spirit of Corruption, and the impending war in all 7 hells. What a run that could’ve been. [x]

Personally for the 'are you mad or is all the scary stuff under a veneer of comfortable normalcy real' type stories a slow build up works better. It felt like I had jumped in at the final issue of a run that would have slowly built up the unease & actually made Johnny part of the community (& his family) so his turn against them would have had a bigger impact.

I have an idea on what the symbolism of the dog was. The dog was a demon, and the sheriff was taunting the Ghost Rider because he knows the Spirit of Vengeance is a hunter and slayer of demons. When he talks about the dog being murdered, he's poking the Rider in Johnny.

I think part of why the psychological elements didn't work is the comic feels like its drawing inspiration from Immortal Hulk. I say this because it the most recent well regarded title from that played with the relationship between the "monster" and "man" with Bruce asking "I'm a good person right?" and Johnny grappling with being "the worst monster" in a horror comic aspect, these concepts aren't purely tied to Immortal Hulk but it wouldn't surprise me if Marvel wanted to strike lightning again with a character who while different can explore similar topics, such as a much more active and vengeful alter ego with Devil hulk and the supernatural Ghost Rider. Why the psychological horror feels directionless IMO is the Hulk can be used as an allegory for DID(MPD) there really isn't a clear mental health issue you can map with Zarathos, by the nature of who Ghost Rider is its a curse that controls the user. One of my fav things about the issue is the wolf eating at the pig. Zarathos isn't a comforting presence, he arrives when Johnny is already at a low point and eats whats left. Johnny is already damned the spirit of vengeance isn't there to save him (In this context) its there to use him as fuel, as food so it can burn as long as it needs to. When ghost rider screams "The pain is the pleasure" could be then read as the relationship you can have with vengeance, the pain that comes from stewing in the trauma and injustice is its own type of pleasure. To forever lash out, to have something that drives you forward even if your trapped in nowhere.

I enjoyed this, but have the same sort of feelings as I did about the previous iterations of Blaze's GR (all the way back to Alejandra); Jason Aaron's run felt like such a capstone to the stories of Blaze and Ketch that subsequent relaunches haven't really done much to bring anything new or particularly interesting to the character. That's why Robbie Reyes worked so well; without all that backstory and convoluted/ rewritten origins and continuity fudges, his Ghost Rider felt new, different and fresh. Which is why his book got cancelled after 12 issues. Blaze is a GR I've struggled to get into (I grew up with Danny Ketch and Zero Cochrane). I love his origin - selling his soul to save a friend, only to end up bound to the demon Zarathos - and the ending of his original run, but much of the middle sixty issues of that run are him just faffing about in search of a direction for his series. Never understood why his supporting cast were written out so early on, leaving him a bit aimless. The retconning he's had this century to basically steal the powers and look of Ketch's GR (arguably the better of the two 'classic' Riders - still love what Ivan Velez did with Ketch) hasn't sat right with me, and I wish Blaze wasn't constantly written as some sort of dumb-ass. I miss the sharper and more assured characterisation he got in the '90s. I'm interested to see where this goes for as long as it lasts (Ghost Rider hasn't done well in recent years) and I wonder, if we're building this back up, that Blaze could get actual Roxanne, Emma and Craig back. I'm sad that they're always now shown as dead - adds emotional weight as a loss, I suppose, but not when we've seen so little of them in 50 years of GR comics.

I actually really liked this but they really turned Johnny's bike into Danny's bike and he got the jacket back that Danny usually supported.

It feels like, with a few tweaks, obviously, it could work much better as an out-of-continuity thing rather than a relaunch 👀

I haven't really followed Marvel continuity for at least a decade, but it's fun watching you talk about it. I remember Garth Ennis did a miniseries starring Johnny Blaze awhile back and Ennis's take was that Johnny was an idiot. Which I kind of agree with, as his origin from way back when really did portray him that way. The character looks great so he keeps coming back, but he doesn't seem to have legs. He needs a writer with a fresh take to reimagine him.

Loved this issue! Probably one of the best relaunches for Marvel in recent times for me.

One of my favorite characters ever and super pumped to check it out since it's done by people that seem to know and love him. This is one of the few things Marvel's done in years that's got me interested again.

Could we please get an episode on all of the various Ghost Riders? I knew of Blaze, Ketch, and Nunyez, and the one from 2099, but not the others.
