Remember that phase when J&J just keep stumbling on dogs? Dogs would show up on their porch or they would stumble upon dogs while walking, take care of them for a bit, and then reunite them with their family. I feel like fate was pointing towards fostering.

@@glorialastra5775 that makes sense. Plus, Jamie probably had plenty of contact with different people and places, which goes a long way towards a dog being able to cope with change. Well, also, the situation Bunny was in was extremely different. She was not a racing dog, she came from a blood farm basically. She probably never left the facility or even saw the sky before Jenna and Julien. Racedogs need a certain temperment and need to be desensitized as part of their training. Im sure Jaime has gone on lots of walks and gotten love before being fostered. The only issue is, like with Jaime, they stop being useful racedogs pretty early and the owners don't want to keep them past their prime usefulness. A lot of selfish dog race owners and breeders breed/purchase these dogs knowing they're only going to be kept useful for winning competitions for so long and then will be given up. It's kinda sad either way, but Bunny wasn't desensitized like Jaime. That's my main point.

@royalrenegadee2 жыл бұрын
racing greyhounds, in general, are treated very well. That's why they're such amazing dogs to adopt. The lies that PETA and Grey2K spread has hurt the industry so much. I used to believe their lies, until I did a photojournal project at a couple tracks in flordia, and what I saw in person was far and away the opposite of what you hear. In fact, Greysave and many other adoption groups are neutral or PRO racing because of how the dogs are treated. That's why Jamie is so confident, unfearful, and calm, while Bunny, who was a donor dog, was the opposite. Abused dogs don't win races. They're professional athletes, and are treated as such. They all know love.

As a long-time foster parent, I promise you that it gets easier! The first one was the absolute hardest for me, and I cried my eyes out for days. Now I can foster an animal and give it all my love, and feel okay when giving them up. I even feel happy afterwards knowing I was a positive influence on their life. What helps is knowing that by giving them up, I can foster another animal that needs it. It's really rewarding being a foster-parent, and I know you are going to love this journey!

I have the same experience with cats. First time I socialized a feral kitten I was crying A LOT because it took so long and looked so hopeless a lot of the time. She wasn't a foster we wanted to keep her but I was definitely prepared to find another living arrangement for her if it hadn't worked because it looked really bad a few times. Now she is 10 years old and the sweetest and cuddliest cat ever, nobody believes us when we tell her where she came from. Now I'm just calm about pretty much anything when it comes to cats and fosters, once you had a really hard case not much can phase you anymore.

@@DieAlteistwiederda, long story just so you know. 2004, a stray cat shows up at my sister's house, black and white, SO skinny, fleas, earmites . Comes right up and just absolutely demands love. My sister says he's been around a few days. Since he's such a sweetheart and she also has a feral cat she feeds, she doesn't mind feeding him but is hesitant ( she had 3 cats and 3 dogs she loves animals) to which I say I will recompense the flea/earmite medication. So she says yes. In the midst of this project, I noticed some sores on his hind feet. So after he goes through that, purring wildly throughout, I ask if she would put an antibiotic ointment on it. I have the hind feet in my right hand, his head in the crook of my elbow but also control of his front feet. We agree that we are ready and she starts to put the stuff on. Seconds later "your hand!" I look down to see the big scary kitty open his mouth...and proceed to lick my hand. He then looks straight up at my face. He had beautiful green eyes and he purred throughout the entire thing. My sister says, "You just fell in love, didn't you?" Yep. Loved that cat, he was FIV+, negative FL and quarantined for several about 8 weeks because I couldn't find a home for him. The facilty was great, I worked 6pm-6:30pm so they technically couldn't let clients in. They let me in at 7 when the staff arrived and also let Spot out during that period. Everyone loved him, but one morning as I left, I was fully crying and the tech aked, " can't you just vaccinate your other cats?" I had never heard of FLV prior, so I questioned her and found a vaccine is available. Researched it. Reason 1) it's only 85% effective 2) a vaccinated cat will show up on their microchip as FIV positive forever .

Being a foster parent is the most rewarding experience. If any of y’all have the space, time and resources, I recommend looking into fostering! I foster cats and will be getting 2 new foster babies this weekend! Giving them up can be hard, but as long as you know you’ve found them a good home, I promise it’s not as hard as it sounds! If you do decide to foster, and need a hand getting started, I’d be happy to help. Also, my dog is part greyhound and was also a race dog. Her name was Lightning Leah, and she is just about the sweetest dog you’d ever meet. If y’all are planning to bring an animal into your home, I 100% recommend a rescue.

my greyhound is super cat reactive, like she wants to eat them and when we go for a walk and see one its a struggle (although shes come a long way and im very proud) but she absolutely adores iggys, she thinks they are little greyhound babys almost and just loves them. Even from a distance when im not sure if somethings a cat or a dog she always knows somehow

That's so cool! I guess it comes from being a sight hound? My roommate's dog was a mutt, I think with some chihuahua, and once he saw a cat he'd be super reactive, but I'd almost always see them first. Maybe it's because I'm much taller than him too.

I think something about fostering versus just adoption it allows Jenna and Julien to be able to continue to take in dogs that need a place to go while the organization looks for good homes. I mean I don’t doubt that they would have as many dogs as possible and take great care of them, but they are able to potentially help more dogs and dog lovers by just fostering.
