Pets getting "returned" is so heartbreaking. My first foster was returned in a week and she was so sad and confused when she came back to me! I have never felt so bad over another animal in my entire life. Then 3 days later the first owner asked us to give her back and I told her it was not possible because I didn't think she would keep her word and not return the animal to me again. Thankfully we found a perfect match not long after and she is living the best life.
@avianna7738
@avianna7738 Жыл бұрын
I adopted a shelter kitty who had been returned to the shelter three or four times before I found her… You can see in her little eyes how rejected she feels and how grateful she is every time she feels loved. It really is heartbreaking. These creatures aren’t a shirt that didn’t fit. They feel rejection and betrayal the way we would. I do understand wanting to “return” a pet that doesn’t fit into your situation for their best interest and well-being. But it’s best to be sure about it BEFORE going into the adoption process at all and selecting a new family member more carefully rather than “trying it” and then changing your mind.

@bbycherub2420
@bbycherub2420 Жыл бұрын
@@avianna7738 It's not possible to know exactly how a shelter dog is before getting it, shelters don't know the dogs genetics, how they were bred, any neurological issues, or any past traumas. It's always a guessing game, my two rescues have aggression issues that weren't told to us before getting them, my male Bull Terrier has severe dog aggression and separation anxiety but the shelter didn't tell us that, they knew but didn't say anything except "He isn't a fan of other dogs" instead of saying "he's dog aggressive" which he is, and my female American Bully has severe human aggression issues and toy guarding issues that also weren't disclosed to us. Surrendering or returning a dog is something that happens, it's not always a bad thing, it's normal. Sometimes a rescue dog fights with the dog already existing in the home, or randomly attacks people, or randomly attacks other dogs, or destroys the house when left alone, and the thing is, the person who adopts the dog doesn't have to take time and money out to help them if they don't want to or just can't, it's not an obligation, especially with how people pressure others to "Adopt don't shop" without even explaining how to safely adopt and deal with a badly bred shelter dog. I've never had to surrender or return a dog but I know people who have, the only times I thing surrendering a dog is bad is when the person surrenders a senior dog they've had forever just for being old, or when they surrender them just because they don't want them anymore and want another dog or none at all, or when they used the dog for breeding and don't want it anymore, or anything like those scenarios.

@@avianna7738 we recently adopted a kitten who was returned to the shelter bc their dogs were getting too rough with him while playing and they didn't foresee that. They were afraid their dogs might hurt him. I'd rather him be q bit confused and maybe a little sad than severely injured. They just didnt know how their dogs would be with a cat & it's not really like you can talk to them about it. I have zero ill will toward those people bc they could have been stubborn and kept him and he could have gotten injured. We lost our last cat in a car accident and it broke our hearts. But that means our dog was familiar with cats and we knew she does well with them. When we got himhe was definitely afraid of her. You can tell the last owner's dogs stepped over the line bc he was just really afraid of her. But over time as she respected his boundaries he now tries playing with her occasionally and isn't afraid at all anymore, not even when she's loud and bays and wiggles everywhere when she's excited. He used to bolt and now he barely reacts. Some animals are just not good fits for a home and you don't know till they're there. I'm glad nothing serious happened and the last owners were responsible and gave him up. I can only imagine how hard it could have been.Thankfully he ended up fitting into our lives easily. I also once had to rehome a lovebird because when I got her I was in good enough shape to care for him. Over time, I started getting more and more severe pains. Ends up I have fibromyalgia. I slowly got less and less mobile and it got harder and harder to do everything I needed to properly care for him. He ended up becoming severely aggressive with me and would attack me. He was not happy. I went on craigslist and asked people to send pictures of their current birds/flock. Found a family that already had a lot of birds and just gave them all the bird stuff I had. It broke my heart but he was not getting the care he deserved with me. On his first night with them he ended up hanging out with them and acting totally normal. He was finally comfortable and happy. So I was happy. I've never once regretted it.

@@FukaiKokoro many Americans have no discipline because convenience culture messed their sense of perseverance. They don’t give time for acclimation and they don’t show the patience and discipline to train a dog. The minute I heard Julen talk about adoption woes I said "Its because shes a black dog" I say this as the owner of two black dogs both of which took an insanely long time to adopt out. One of them was the last of her litter to be adopted out, looking like a tiny little curly furred teddy bear. Legitimately the cutest puppy. I told the foster I didnt understand why she was still available out of all the puppies...but she was one of the only black dogs. Jokes on them shes still cutest puppy and never lost her big puppy eyes. The other dog is a GORGEOUS fully black long coated collie shepherd mix. Just stunning, fairly young. She was on the adoption website for months. Of course I was "just looking". But month after month I couldn't understand why she wasnt getting taken. Its a huge shame. If anyone is reading this please look specifically for black dogs to adopt.

That's so horrible! I've always wanted black cats or dogs when I have space for a pet, and they're just as sweet and perfect as any other cat or dog. Plus the way they shine in sunlight is next-level gorgeous. I was attacked by a rottweiler when I was 3, and it was clear even then he was just scared because his owners were pretty crappy. Had nothing to do with his breed or coloration or anything. It's heartbreaking when people judge innocent creatures based on things they can't control.

@monyx2926
@monyx2926 Жыл бұрын
@@inbuttsmeeting I absolutely agree. Fail sounds negative, but this is not a pejorative. I fostered for over 10 years. I am, proudly, a foster fail, too. While searching for homes, as a volunteer and fosterer, we always loved our foster fails because they found the perfect companion. It is a tongue-in-cheek positive. The only negative side is that many of those foster families never fostered again. That said, it was a win for the lovely animal and the foster folks!
@ShesAaRebel
@ShesAaRebel Жыл бұрын
It's not a fail, as in you failed the dog. It's a fail in the sense that (in most cases) the foster parent is now failing all the other dogs they could have brought into their home and saved. It's also a nuanced term, because it's not in every case where the person stops fostering dogs, or at least working with a rescue in another important way. But like Julien was saying, I also think that if you foster enough animals, it's bound to happen where you find one that fits so perfectly into your home, that you can't let them go. The harsh truth is, without enough foster homes, many dogs will be euthanized. It also takes a lot of time and resources to train, and properly vet foster parents. So if the rate of "foster fails" is high, then it can negatively impact the rescue. This is why the term is really drilled into the people who decide to foster.

I love black animals! I think they’re gorgeous. In the greyhound group I volunteer with, we all maintain that the black boys are the best; the kennel favorite is almost always a black dog, and we advocate for them the hardest. (My greyhound is a brindle, but I’d adopt a black one in a heartbeat if I had room for any more pets in my apartment.)

You and Jenna were a big reason I ultimately decided on adopting an ex-racer when I could finally get my first dog (it had been a consideration for a while, but seeing your journey with Bunny, even though she wasn’t a racer, really sealed the deal). It has been absolutely the best thing I’ve ever done, and my girl is completely perfect for me. Her growth in the last two years since coming off the track has been amazing to see. I volunteer with the group I adopted her from and it’s so rewarding to see these fantastic dogs go to their forever homes - and so hard when they bounce. We have had several fosters who end up adopting their bounces as well because it’s so difficult for them, and often times that foster “fail” is the best possible thing that could have happened to them. Loni sounds like she is absolutely perfect for your family, and I’m so glad she’s home. ❤️

Currently watching my grey girl snooze on her bed in front of me. I owe her being here with me now (almost a month in!) and changing my life to Jenna, Julien, and Bunny too ♥️ I met her adoption organization last August (almost a year ago now!), learned about her in January, and she was finally able to come home to me in June. We intend to stay close w/ her adoption organization as well! To think that what’s become a new passion for me all started in April 2019 when Jenna’s first video about Bunny came out… Truly one of the best dog breeds, and certainly the greytest ♥️

Oh, Loni is NOT a fail at all, she’s a total win, and she won’t be the last one who finds her way as a foster to a permanent. Some of the ones we fostered were happier in other families, but we definitely had a lot who stayed :) Greyhounds are THE sweetest souls. I’m 44 and my mom started adopting greys in the early eighties. I have no memories of my life without a greyhound :) I lost my fifteen year old girl in January, and right now I am without a greyhound. It’s awful. I’ve got three dachshunds and a very old decrepit chihuahua. I never had tiny dogs and they’re great, but I really can’t wait to get more greyhounds. I’ve never been without greyhounds OR horses and their energy cannot be described. Julien is correct too, about black dogs, for some reason they are often overlooked. No one wants them…they think they look like skinny labs. It’s just an unfortunate side effect of human beings need to be seen as unique, as special, and it’s sad, yes, but at the end of the day each and every dog deserves to be loved wholly, and if someone can’t appreciate a lovely dog for who they are…they don’t deserve that dog. At the end of the day, a dog isn’t it’s body, it’s its soul. Like us, we are just bananas inside peels, the peel doesn’t matter at all.

Maybe no one else loved her enough because there were no other people who could love her more. I used to rescue feral kittens and get them tamed and rehomed a lot when I was in my teens and 20s. In the last two litters that we had come through, there were two cats that I knew in my heart were destined to be with me. One of them was a tuxedo who ended up being the absolute sweetest baby in the world. She was with me through numerous surgeries, through becoming disabled, through sickness and sorrow. She was always there, quiet and compassionate, and I don't know how I could've gotten through all this without her. I lost her last year to cancer and it has flipped my whole world upside down. I could have never imagined my life and my journey without her. She saw me through my last surgery and I said goodbye 3 weeks later. I fully believe these babies end up with who they belong with, even if we can't see it at the beginning of our journey together.

I fully agree with this! My family adopted a cat that had been adopted from the shelter and surrendered again multiple times (the last time by our neighbors, that's how we met her). She has a very confusing personality that needs patience, and honestly a very cat-focused family, to get past, and we think that a lot of her issues stem from being adopted and surrendered so many times. She loves people, follows us around the house, and sleeps pressed up against us like she's scared to lose us, but she also has a temper and it is clear why some families would not have been willing or able to keep her. She's had a hard life, and we've promised her she'll never have to go through a shelter again as long as we are here. The bounce backs are extremely confusing and stressful for pets, so thank you for being so thoughtful to Loni!

When you were talking about internalizing the things Loni was going through, man do I feel that. We just rescued the sweetest boy, Max, he was abandoned by my MIL's neighbor. Totally feel you. Our boy Oliver was returned 8 times before we got him. And for silly things too, like escaping the yard, barking at them when they came home late in the dark, and a neighbor saying they were going to sue due to his breed. He is the best thing that has ever happened to us and is the perfect boy (even with whatever behavioral issues we’ve had to work through and he’s come so far due to doing that work). As someone who's been on the opposite side of this experience I totally understand. Although the dog didn't necessarily bounce. After we brought her home she started getting stressed out in the stress caused seizures ( keep in mind this was a very relaxed inviornment with the most happening in the house was the tv on ) which she had never had before. When we told the Foster parent of the Shepard that she had seizeures and if it was normal behavior, they said no, it's new, and they insisted on taking her back. We almost wanted to tell them no but we knew that the best thing for the dog would be an environment that they were comfortable with but didn't make her have stress or seizures.

the entire time i was watching this, i kept thinking, "Loni didn't get adopted because she's a black dog." i'm SO HAPPY someone in the chat brought that up. a lot of people see black dogs and automatically ssume they're scary and/or dangerous dogs. it is very unfortunate and i strongly believe it's rooted in the inherent racism that some humans have.🤷🏾‍♀

@@edenjaycollins6055 inherent racism as in deep-rooted racism that some people might not even be fully aware that they have, but is also very hard for them to acknowledge and/or unlearn. some also know and don't care bc they truly believe their racist thoughts. since the beginning of time (in America), Black people have been viewed as scary, dangerous and thugs and etc. even within Black communities, unfortunately, there's segregation between "light skin" and "dark skin" where "light skin" people are viewed as "pretty" and easily approachable + more sought after and put on a higher pedestal than "dark skin" people who are viewed as "rough", "scary", and having an "attitude problem". an example of inherent racism could be: no matter how hard someone would try to say they aren't racist, if they see a Black person walking towards them on the sidewalk/near their car they get scared and cross the street/lock their doors. people are using that same logic when it comes to dogs. Black dogs = Scary and Dangerous creatures. whenever they see one on the street, they're more likely to get scared by that dog than say, a light brown or golden one. bc we're taught, as a society, that Black is scary and dangerous. even when it comes to yin and yang, Black is negative, white is positive. Black magic is a bad thing, whereas White magic is good. when people think of nice and pure, they think of white. i could honestly go on and on but yes to answer your question: *tldr* inherent racism is deep-rooted racism that is very hard for someone to unlearn. it relates to dogs because people are using their same racist logic (Black is bad, dangerous, and scary) when it comes to dogs. Thus, not adopting the Black dogs because they think Black dogs are scary and dangerous and won't make a good, nice family pet. lol i hope this makes sense! i didn't expect it to get this long, i guess i'm just passionate about this lol idk

@@blaykehawk2714 Ah okay, I get what your saying but I'm going to be honest I don't agree, not with inherent racism that's definitely a thing, as in we're not taught as a society that dark = bad and light = good. I've studied colour theory and our perception of colours is much older then racism and deeply ingrained in the human psych, our fear of dark comes from the night, the dark is scary and unknowing you can't see through it and to our ancestors it would have also been the most dangerous time, its an evolutionary trait. And likewise with the day, the light, when we can see and when we're safer its associated with good. I don't think you would be able to change that aspect of the human mind like I said its an evolutionary instinct. However that doesn't mean it can't impact people and I think your right about it being part of colourism and favouring light skin people over dark and intensifying racism, and it definitely impacts dogs as black dogs are a bad omen in almost every culture. Again I hope this doesn't come of as rude I don't want to minimise or undermine racism or its impacts, this is all with peace and love

Congratulations Loni! She’s going to have the best life with you, Jenna and the dogs. We rescued a schnauzer eight years ago and he bounced around several foster homes before we decided to take him (he really liked my dad and my dad wanted him)-he’s a great dog and once you get past the hyper behavior and the barking-he’s actually very sweet and loving. Rescue dogs are truly so special and make amazing dogs when the right person gives them a chance. I hope to rescue dogs one day too.

Just went through the same exact process with my foster kitten. He got overlooked day in and day out and I couldn’t stand the stress of him growing up in a shelter. He’s part of the family now and fits in better than I ever could have expected. Congrats on adopting Loni, everything happens for a reason! ❤️

The way you talk about Loni reminds me of my dog Sheriff. He was the most amazing boy because not only did he love people but he loved other dogs to the point where he almost was like a therapy dog to other dogs. She sounds like such a unique spirit and I’m so glad you get to go with her on her amazing life journey xoxo

Julien! I'm an older millennial, I haven't jumped on the twitch bandwagon yet and I've also just had a baby 8 months ago so I'm extremely out of the Julien loop. This video made my heart burst- Loni is gorgeous, congrats to the whole family! Can you do a dog update video for KZbin for us old mom millennials 🤣 love you guys, so happy for you!

I had a feeling this might happen since they had her so long, but it's still nice to see (possible negatives asides). They're gonna have SO many dogs eventually, and I'm so happy the greyhound/rescue community has them and other people like them. Definitely a big inspiration, especially since I adore dogs and really hope to foster some in the future when I have the space. eta: julie is such a sweetheart and loni is such a big baby, just sitting in his lap. so cute!
