Advertising during the evening news (since some commenters are mentioning older folks)? Advertising during the Super Bowl? Would those be effective? And if they are effective, what Tesla cars are those people going to buy? I had the impression we are pretty much selling every Tesla car made for the USA market. Another thing to consider is that gas car companies advertise all the time. Yet they are shrinking. Tesla focuses all their energy on product. The stock price is not tied to advertising. It's tied to special interest groups. Don't conflate the two. Essentially, don't do what failing companies are doing. I would suggest a mainstream media event to showcase the features and safety ratings along with an overview of FSD. If you don't gain any sales, that's fine. At least people in that consumer branch will pass on the concepts to their influence pools.

The problem with advertising is that it is a slippery slope. Arguments grow as to different parts of the process where advertising can be involved. Soon advertisers' views become a part of every production decision. Musk should stick with his disdain for advertising. It is ultimately a negative for manufacturing companies.
@TheZoneTakesYou Жыл бұрын
The company is full of engineers with equal disdain for arts majors. The marketing department will never take over.
@frankhoffman3566 Жыл бұрын
@@TheZoneTakesYou That requires some vigilance. Inherent in modern advertising is underestimating the intelligence of consumers. After decades of off-shore companies building better cars and beating legacy auto in sales, the whole underestimating the American consumer remained a stubbornly fixed, damaging philosophy. Even small advertising inroads become cemented in and expansionist. This opposition to advertising was one of the primary factors moving me to invest in Tesla. If they worm their way in, I'll check out.
@SP30305ATL Жыл бұрын
Elon couldn't say, since he owns ad-dependent Twitter now, but I doubt advertising will make any measurable difference in sales demand. If anything, ads might help with short-term stock prices, but for long term value it will mean next to nothing, IMO. But hey, now he has cover to send 💰💰💰 from Tesla to Twitter--the investors demanded it!
@magnamic5614 Жыл бұрын
Some investors demanded it. That room does not represent all Tesla investors. I see Polstar, Nissan and Ford advertising their EV’s every single day yet look where they are in sales and educating the public. I was never against advertising. I’m against advertising now. Tesla does a lot of educating. If people don’t care to do the research themselves to find the education before making a purchase of an EV then they deserve what they purchase. My honest belief is that some Tesla investors want Tesla to be like traditional auto WAAY too soon. Build the product and be successful at logistics with every product you make before you advertise to ensure you can meet the demand of the people you are advertising to. Tesla may be the Gold Standard of EV’s right now but can production meet this advertised demand enough to keep the prices fair for the consumer? I doubt it at this stage but I’m a nobody so who cares. Next headline from the mainstream media: Tesla promised to advertise but fails to meet the demand.” “Tesla now advertising like the traditional auto has been doing for years but fails at it.” No matter what happens this will not flow into the mainstream in a positive light until the mainstream media companies change their ways.

I think the biggest benefit to Tesla advertising could be fewer negative articles about them! Negative articles get more clicks, regardless of topic. But a publication gets more income from advertisers then from subscribers, so they don't want to lose advertisers. For example, Consumer reports posts negative articles about Tesla, but not Ford because Ford is a big advertiser in their magazine. If Tesla were to also become a big advertiser with Consumer Reports, then no more negative articles about Tesla from them.

What Kevin really should have said was to educate not advertise. Word of mouth education is the best advertising and doesn't cost anything. As word of mouth educating spreads (mostly from Tesla vehicle owners, social media influence and others) about all things Tesla along with it's continuing rapid rise and dominance in conjunction with the exponential market growth of EVs, there is no need to spend money on something whose value is fleeting and is difficult to measure. Resources are better utilized and deliver far more bang for the buck when put toward innovation, manufacturing efficiency improvements and the expansion and building of new Giga factories. If you build a superior product with equally good execution on delivery and customer experience the customers will come and the market will follow. Tesla is doing just fine and will continue to do so without expensive advertising.

Advertising is for products that suck and are for convincing grumpy people to buy products they don’t need. Any advertiser will tell you, the best advertising is with the products that sell themselves. They don’t have to do any work and the campaign is cheap and easy. Teslas are impressive, anyone that rides in one will be impressed. Anyone that try’s another EV will ALWAYS end up comparing their experience to a Tesla. Even the dissatisfied Tesla customer will ultimately come back. All the hard work is paying off, it’s impossible to not see it. That’s the benefit of being so far ahead of the competition, no matter how much you screw up, the competition is always 10x worse. Save that money for Twitter or SpaceX, or blow it on a goofy idea for fun or buy a country. You don’t need a miserable advertising experience, there is no fun in convincing grumpy people into doing what they don’t want to.
@ordinaryhuman5645 Жыл бұрын
No, advertising is for informing consumers of the existence of a product or service. The vast majority of people have not heard of the vast majority of things. Waiting for a single person to tell another single person about how much they love their Tesla is waaaay slower than broadcasting to millions of uninformed people about how great Teslas are now. The vast majority of people aren't just going to randomly decide to ride in a Tesla. But a lot of people might be impressed by a 15 second ad on the idiot box or whatever and decide to try riding in a Tesla sometime. All of the advertising in the world won't help a poor product, but even the best product can't just sell itself, especially when people are misinformed about it. And most people have been very misinformed about Tesla vehicles. Try talking to a boomer who only hears about Tesla from mainstream news. Everything they think they know about Tesla (e.g. price, range, charging time, safety) is wrong.

@@ordinaryhuman5645 Then why are the marketing meetings miserable, the advertising poorly executed, the messaging off subject and disruptive and annoying? 75% of TV is advertising, the pop up’s are aggravating, and the ads are not what save the company when all the budget is allocated to them. Marketing is not a Nobel cause, it didn’t stop child slavery, it didn’t feed the hungry, it never won a Nobel peace prize. There is no need to “boost” sales. The demand is over 30million cars a year, Tesla can make 2. What’s the point of telling the world to buy a Tesla when they can’t make enough for the people that want them. All you end up doing is annoying people and making them sad. Any good marketer or sales person knows this. @@davidgutting4317 Why? Because most people are stupid and most corporations have crap with little merit to sell. I would hope that Tesla can do better because they are better. There is a need to boost sales, because Tesla is going to be making far more cars in the future than they do now. Sales will have to improve along with production or Tesla would start losing money and would go bankrupt with how aggressively they're planning to expand. And with Tesla's wait lists already emptied (except for the cyber truck), it's clear that the number of informed customers who correctly want a Tesla is going to be starting to be outgrown by the number of cars that Tesla can produce, which was not the case in prior years. Tesla can only cut prices so much. With most people being misinformed about their products, the low hanging fruit to pluck is informing them so they'll want Tesla's products. The goal isn't just stock prices. It's getting people to transition to EVs and to stop buying ICE cars. If a lot of people learn about Tesla and decide to get on a wait list instead of just buying a gas guzzling Ford or something, then that's a win even if Tesla doesn't increase prices.

@@ordinaryhuman5645 you have no idea of what the demand or needs the market has & are holding the belief that you can convince people to change their minds and leave the comfort of their beliefs when they don’t want to & have no idea of how many people who are already waiting for a chance to get a Tesla without needing an advertisement to put them over the apprehension. The demand last year was 15million, this year it’s 30million, next year it’s going to be 60million and it will go up exponentially for the next 5years until we get closer to 30% of the worlds population. (30% of the population is?).Elon has tried to explain this to everyone but marketing and sales people hang on to the idea that they are solely responsible for changing peoples minds and are the only source of information to the uninformed public that can’t make a decision without them. The vast majority of the misinformation is coming from people who want to feel good and get an endorphin rush out of triggering you when you try to change their minds. Most normal people are pretty smart, if they see a bunch of Teslas around , the smart ones look for more information. That’s a lot of people, way more than Tesla can make for at least the next 10 years. And if you think VW, GM, or Ford is catching up, they are 10 years behind Tesla. This whole investors day presentation was explaining why Tesla doesn’t need to start reaching out to the stupid population for 10 years. The fact that you couldn’t put that together suggests that you would prefer to maintain your mind controll belief that marketing is the most important thing to Tesla and not the product. 600 million people don’t like advertisements and don’t need to hear from you about buying one, they are just waiting in line until Tesla can get to them.
