Ben, I wish I could talk to you in person about your mom. You are not alone. My mom was very much the same. I am glad that in the final years of her life that I finally sort of understood her and for the most part did my best to become her friend - not easy but not impossible. She passed away 2 yrs ago at the age of 93, and I am so thankful that I came to understand her. I ended up feeling sorry for her, vs previously simply hating her. And amazingly, I miss her. It was not perfect at the end, but now I know that at least I really tried to understand her and get to know her for more than the verbal abuse that I endured for all of my life. It is extremely hard to not get caught up in the tit for tat hatred, but it will free you up from the bitterness and you will be forever thankful that you at least tried. All of this is hard to but into words. I hope that you can come to peace with her while there is still time. She may not be in total control of how she acts, maybe her past and/or maybe medical or genetics - who knows. People with normal mothers don't understand unless confronted with it first hand. Anyway, God bless you and your poor mom.
