May 6 -- The 142nd Kentucky Derby is on Saturday, when everyone will be watching what happens on the track. But it's the horses' bloodlines that are remarkable this year. Tapit has been leading sire for years and has three colts in the race but all the buzz is around up-and-coming sire Uncle Mo, whose first round of offspring will also have three colts in the race. The favorites are Nyquist, Mo Tom and Outwork. Mo's recent success has doubled the horses stud fee giving him a valuation his owners say is $100 million. Bloomberg's Michael Barr reports. (Corrects stud fee in voice-over and video updated with new voice-over.)

Why are y’all saying, “poor horse” ??? He has the best life any horse could have. He’s living better than you and I. Not all racehorses are abused and sent to slaughter. In fact, most horse owners are very responsible in this industry and will either retire or re home their horses. These animals love to run, if they didn’t they wouldn’t be on the track. Now, I can’t speak for the small time racing, because I don’t follow that, but in the big time you rarely find an owner or farm that does their horses dirty. It’s not all about the money, it’s about the horse. If any of you did research and knew what actually went on in the industry you wouldn’t even waste your breath. I am fully aware that bad things happen but that has nothing to do with the racing industry as a whole. It’s definitely not perfect, nothing is, but it’s not animal abuse either as long as you have a responsible owner and trainer who treat their horses right.

Equine Kelsey Lol this has nothing to do with being a “horse whisperer” 😂 This is about facts. Have you even ever been to a race? How much do you REALLY know about the thoroughbred industry? I’ve seen it first hand, and I love horses so I would NEVER support anything that I felt was abuse. Obviously I’m probably not going to change your mind, but guess what. That’s your problem, not mine. You can’t change my opinion or any other racing fans opinions because we know, and have seen everything that goes into it. These horses do love to run and you can’t argue with that unless you’ve experience it yourself.

His stud fee is $225,000 a breeding because his progeny do so well. A lot of his progeny are multi million dollar earners and his grand foals are doing the same, making him a sire of sires. He's highly sought after for producing big winners and has conformation to die for and is very sound along with having big names in his pedigree with a.p indy, seattle slew and secretariat. He has everything you could want in a stud.

The Amazing....drrrrum rooooooll...... The Little Bay Colt - Northern Dancer!!! Uncle Mo is ONLY 3x interbred with Canada's "Sire Of ALL Sires" Northern' Dancer. Actually The Kentucky Derby was really NEVER the "Best 2 minutes in racing" Until Our Dancer set the record AT 2 minutes in "64. AND with ALL his racing on a cracked hoof!!! OVER 90% of ALL thoroughbreds WORLDWIDE are inbred to Northern Dancer. More so with the Champions!!! No wonder STUD fees THAT can't BE TOUCHED... TODAYS ARE NO WHERE NEAR the $1,000,000.00 ($1MILLION) when Northern was in his 20's. And an offer of $40,000,000 in 1982 (Over $110,000,000.00 today)when OUR Dancer was 21 YEARS OLD, And producing Stake winners for several more years after THAT... I hear they are going to rename the thorough"bred" breed; The "NorthternDancerbred breed. Because of OUR 'Dancers TOTAL Dominance. like no other athlete in ANY sport!!! But to think as a yearling Noooooooobody wanted OUR Northern Dancer... "Too small" they said for a reserved bid of $20,000. OUR Northern Dancer, generated $BillionsX$Billion in HIS Prodigy Line(S). NORTHERN DANCER'S KIDDIES EXACTLY LIKE UNCLE MO, STILL OUTRIGHT OWN TODAYS BREED CHAMPIONS!!!

Karl Wilson what happens when they can't race anymore?They most likely go to slaughter,and the horses are started way to early,they still haven't developed their body so that makes them have fatal break downs and internal breeding and foals that don't race and either killed or starved to death,or left to die
@Oswald_Thatendswald
@Oswald_Thatendswald 6 жыл бұрын
Equine Kelsey when they cant race anymore most are either retired to a stud farm to breed more racehorses, or retire and become the outriders horses, since they are more calm than horses who weren't previous racers (due to their experience at the track and with large crowds and noises.) Fatal breakdowns are extremely rare, and foals that don't race aren't starved to death or left to die, either. That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

When you want to be acknowledged as a true champion, I truly believe that you must beat the opposition FAIR and SQUARE especially your main contender (Mendelssohn). Don't accept willful blatant aggressive damaging contact by jockey Luis Saez on a no-hoper Magnun Moon to spoil the natural beauty of competitive horseracing, because it has benefited home advantage. Jockey Luis Saez should be banned for a minimum of 6 months because of (1) the Quality of the race itself, and (2) The Foreign involvement .... , barring all, after viewing this race, which foreigner in his sane mind would want to ever take the risk of entering his horse in a race where he anticipates that his prized animal would be willfully sabotaged. At the start, Jackass Luis Saez willfully swerved violently left initiating damaging contact with Mendelssohn and he completed the demolition job another 150 yds away by again enforcing damaging contact. Stooping so low to win is bad for the sport Internationally, so AMERICA, If you DON'T want the FOREIGN OPPOSITION, there are kind and courteous ways of passing on that info, but to batter and degrade the Foreign opposition by unfair, foul, evil, wicked means just simply for the home team to win, looks bad in the eyes of THE WORLD. Just hoping that effective measures would be put in place before The Breeders Cup. Show less

@Orlando Business I think you're paranoid. The horse is insured, so the owners would get paid for the 'value' of their stolen asset. Of course, a stolen racehorse is a disaster, because the owners are probably fond of their horse & money can't replace a living creature. OB, how could anyone steal a racehorse? Be realistic. The owners and law enforcement know what the horse looks like. Do you really think someone could steal a racehorse qualified to run in the Kentucky Derby? And what would the thieves gain from stealing a high-profile, living asset? Theives couldn't sell a stolen racehorse. It would be too easy to identify.Your comment is unusual; no one would attempt to steal the horse & no one is going to lose their sanity. Have a nice day.

Not always true. They train on and sometimes do win. I know the perceived notion is to win in this sport, but you don't need to win every time when the business end kicks in. A top 1 to 5 placing gives you a pay cheque, your horse earns and you continue on until, you decide that enough is enough and it's retirement time or the horse tells you he doesn't want to compete anymore. You can do the right thing and retire a horse, put it in the field to sleep and run, but some want to have a job, and need to have a job to feel useful. They'll kick down their stall walls to get out and do something. There is a dark side in the sport, no doubt, but 98% of the folks involved in racing would never resort to sending their horses to slaughter. Most have their remains buried on the farms they reside at, and pass with dignity, whether it's passing due to old age, illness, or an injury on course. We are not all monsters, most of us love these animals, and admire their ability, and beauty.

Not realistic thinking. Race horses that don't win often or just sometimes One never knows what most often stand at stud. The mares are sent to the studs. One never knows what a stud will sire. Sometimes very good racers are sired by a horse that did not race all that well.
