Yeah, the early dark age fans had some takes that lead to: Characters not being well written for 12 years (2009 after black knight - 2022), Characters not being rightly characterized for 15 years, No great sonic story for 15 years, Sonic style being gone for 15 years, No *cool* in-game cgi cutscenes for 12 years (2011 - today 2024 march 12th) and so on. As a dark age fan that wasn't a fan of sonic during that era, I must say that dark age was so good. People just didn't see it bc they only had high expectations for 06 in their heads and they never let those failed expectations go even after Sonic Unleashed got released.

First off the dark age fans opinions had nothing to do with the wrighters or sonic's same artstyle, the wrighters were lazy and didnt know a thing about the characters so they written what they thought the characters would act, and i thought people advocate for creative art Styles in the franchise like the adventure artstyle or riders, but sega again chose the artstyle that looked good to them reguardless of the people who complain about it, people back then were argueing over green eyes, they think after SA2 all sonic games were "bad" when thats far from the case, both the fandom and sega are to blame for there bad desitions and the fandoms inconsistent and awful opinions on Sonic games as a whole
