But isolated cultures able to have their needs met by the environment frequently slide backwards with technology because they are not competing against any other groups of humans. It's sort of like how bonobo chimps became smaller, weaker, and less intelligent over countless generations because they wound up in an area where they are protected from other chimp tribes, protected from dangerous predators, and have all the food they could need growing in their area.

It's probably means that because they're so isolated, because no differing genetic material has been introduced, their DNA is . . . I'm not sure how to say it, purer? If they've been on that island since nearly the beginning and since then their environment has had no overtly drastic change and they've lived the same lifestyle as their ancestors did a thousand generations ago, then there's likely been no adaptation in their DNA either. I think that's what he meant, that it is the most unchanged and therefore the closest to the original (barring perhaps some of those other tribes he mentioned at the beginning).

It is crazy to think that there are places like this nowadays that are literally thousands of years behind in evolutionary progression compared to the rest of us.
