Emma Tyrant has dedicated over a decade to working as an international student representative. I first met Emma in 2014 when she was the African Regional International Office Representative for the University of Nottingham (UoN), where she supported African student admissions and alumni partnerships. Our conversation with Emma was inspiring and insightful, shedding light on her passion for helping international students.
Emma spent eight years at the University of Nottingham, supporting African student admissions and alumni relations. In the past two years, she has founded her consultancy organization, Graduate Guidance Group, to extend her support to other UK universities, connecting international students and alumni, and informing aspiring African students about scholarships, UK education, and the courses they would like to study.
In this interview, Emma shares her journey from her teenage years when her father, a chaplain at the University of Nottingham, introduced her to international students. She recalls her family hosting Christmas dinners for international students, which sowed the seeds for her commitment to this cause. Today, Emma is a "super connector," linking aspiring international students, current students, and alumni across different UK universities.
We discussed tips for international students aspiring to study in the UK, the differences between home and international students, and Emma's travels in Africa. She shared her projects at Graduate Guidance Group and personal stories of students she has helped, highlighting the joy of seeing them succeed. Emma's advice for international students and immigrants in the UK is truly inspiring.
Emma is the director of Graduate Guidance Group, an education and careers consultancy organization. She is passionate about connecting people and opportunities. She previously worked for the University of Nottingham for eight years, focusing on sub-Saharan Africa. Emma holds both bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Nottingham and currently joins us from Accra, Ghana. It is amazing to see Emma. I met her at Sheraton Abuja a few months before I left for the UK in 2016. During her meeting for new and old UoN students, she shared some insights and valuable tips about how to navigate the UK as a student. It was a fantastic opportunity that kickstarted my PhD journey in the University of Nottingham. It was a great opportunity to network and connect with other prospective students and for old students share valuable advice. I am happy to see her here. Keep soaring, Emma!
