I was deployed to Iraq 3 times. The first time I saw 1114s that had received the extra bolt on armor kits. Get shredded by the nuts and bolts IEDs. Needless to say we lost some guys during that. The 2nd time I was sent to support a unit that had received Bradleys because they were getting hammered pretty badly in Hummers. My 2nd week there I had to load 8 Hummers onto flat racks because of IED damage. My thumbnail photo is of my loading one of these Hummers. To me Hummers were coffins on wheels. They did very little to stop IEDs and RPGs. And I have seen bone yards in Kuwait during my time in Iraq where these boneyards were several football fields long and just full of Hummers. I cant express what a sickening and depressing sight that place was. I was there the 3rd time when the International and Maxxpro's MRAPs came online for our units. They were a HUGE difference in performance and they made us feel allot more secure than riding around in Hummers. I hope the Army and other branches completely gets rid of Hummers. Having them in the inventory only leads to temptation to use them again for these dangerous missions. And that's only putting soldiers at risk. When I first came into the Army the Hummer was a symbol of how great our equipment and vehicles where. We could go anywhere in them and often did. But Iraq made me hate them and I got sick of towing in destroyed and shredded Hummers. And I hated losing friends and fellow soldiers in them.

I was at one of these events in 2009 as a soldier and we got to do testing on some of the stuff but the Oshkosh guy was stumped when he was asking what i as a soldier thought and when i said it needed cup holders he thought i was on crack. i explained to him why i felt we needed them and that the fire extinguisher could be removed to provide locked storage for my drink... anyways in 2012 one of the new trucks from them had cup holders

sounds like oshkosh can take a hint... lol really though they probably kept hearing the same exact thing from multiple people checking it out... "this is awesome... wait bro where am I gonna put my drink?" a simple thing since they were focused on the vehicle part of the operation they probably didnt think to much about the human operation save for the light armor.

A friend of mine works at a Refinery checkpoint in Iraq, basically check vehicles passing through. One day a guy tries to avoid the checkpoint and a pursuit starts. My friend and a colleague of hers were in a Humvee in pursuit and they were losing the guy, because the humvee can only go roughly 60 mph on the road. Well, the guy suddenly turns off the road and my friend and her colleague just looked at each other and said, "He went off the road....." Well apparently while Humvees can only go 60 mph they don't need to slow down when going off road, so they quickly caught up to the guy who was hiding something innocent like banned fruit. They would've let him pass if he had just said that but instead they searched his whole vehicle haha.
@quadgod81113 жыл бұрын
Ya that didn’t happen check points do not allow pursuits you would call it in and that would be the end not only that you never chase them because they normally try to lead you to a trap and driving off road is the stupidest shit I’ve ever heard and goes against every ied class I’ve ever received
@Muddyspartan3 жыл бұрын
@@quadgod8111 I mean, I can only tell you what my friends told me. Apparently the guy didnt stop for the checkpoint, and kept going. My understanding is that the person was going towards the refinery which was along the road, so they had to chase. The area past the checkpoint was secure, and they had to chase in case they blew up the refinery. Different procedure. At the end of the day, that what my friend told me and I have no reason to believe they lied. If you don't believe, can't do much about it.

There has been many off the shelf MRAPs that were thrown into combat (RG-31, RG-33, Caiman, Cougar, etc.) to help counter the IED/EFP threats in Iraq and Afghanistan. MRAPs were great for getting from point A to point B but have severe tactical disadvantages. For example, the inability to quickly dismount and mount, especially while carrying 65-80+ lbs under full combat load. That's why many units continued to use the Humvee (M1114, M1151, etc.) even though they lacked the survivability of MRAPs. The Humvee was a great design in the early 1980s and was the answer to replace the venerable Jeep but when IEDs, and later EFP threats emerged in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Coalition Forces had to adapt to the changing conditions of the battlefield. This would have been a great option years ago but unfortunately, Congress can only spend so much for upgrading and adopting new vehicle systems, especially for something as major as replacing the Humvee. Furthermore, lessons learned had to be incorporated into this vehicle system, improving the capabilities and survivability. That's why we are only now starting to see a myriad of new systems (weapon, vehicle, equipment, etc.) being introduced and issued now that the U.S. Armed Forces has switched gears (Post OEF/OIF era) from direct action operations and now focusing on reorganization and training with a now much smaller force. Hope you enjoyed the AUSA meeting/expo, it's a great opportunity to see the future of warfare technology and business at its finest.

Looks like a great upgrade for the troops. Glad that this thing has the power to go with all the other performance aspects. The HMMWV suffered because it had a very underpowered engine to start, and then they grafted on all kinds of things it wasn't designed for. Mike Hershey I'm not sure about that- old APC's are available on the surplus market. Getting one of these licensed for the road is another matter entirely however... At first I was skeptical about the whole "hmmwv replacement" thing. But it makes sense that they would want a replacement for the uparmored hmmwv. When I was deployed for oif we were breaking axles and frames somewhat frequently due to the terrain and all of the extra gear we were hauling. Some of the trucks didn't even have more than a few thousand miles on them. The mraps were even worse.

TWO FORTY BRAVO OPERATOR BII for the MRAP was GFE, and carried over to the MATV. I worked on the OEM side of the RG31, and it was a nightmare for TACOM having so many different OEM-specific BII's. Since this is a close cousin to the MATV , and since the PM is run out of TACOM, my guess is the BII, and the PMCS will be very similar.
