I wish we would see more of this with other herps. I think they learned the hard way with frogs, so many species went extinct so fast from people hoarding them and all the animals getting sick and dying at the same time. Hopefully someday we will focus on diverse captive breeding of all herps instead of blocking captive breeding and dooming them to extinction when the original habitat is destroyed and the few places that have them have a disaster.

I've been thinking about this - how do new species make it into the trade? IMO it should be more common in case some species become extinct in the wild, they'll be available as CB. Of course we don't want to over-collect, but there should be a backup population in captivity.

I totally agree about bioactive, it makes people not clean as much. If you can't see it, you ignore it. But some enrichment would be nice.

he has enrichment. Frogs can't see things that aren't bug-like (well, that aren't convex shaped), they aren't like reptiles, birds or mammals. ...but they have fairly complex auditory processing, so the audio is way more important than having fake plants in the enclosure. (This doesn't apply to poison dart frogs, which need places to lay eggs or hide eggs etc). Pretty enclosures for most types of frogs are for our human benefit not for the frogs.

@@rocketqueen232 certain species yes. They aren’t mammals reptiles or birds. They don’t play, they don’t exercise for fun. They sit there until they hear or see something they want. Some species of frogs will explore, but not these. You notice how some of the other species had cool enclosures? Those are the species that benefit from them, and don’t have as onerous cleaning requirements… notably poison dart frogs. Also that species doesn’t really climb, they lay there on the ground waiting for bugs or mates.

@@rocketqueen232 Weirdly, yeah, for some of them (paper towel with sound enrichment). I did captive grow and release to restabilize a population of grey tree frogs that was decimated by pesticides and a breeding pool that was getting destroyed every year (also restored a new breeding area). A lot of them chose to come back to the house/garage/barn/etc and spent the rest of their lives stuck to a small 2 foot by 2 foot spot on building or in light fixtures or air conditioners etc, rather than the trees. Any I put on a building, just stayed there. I don't know where they went in the winter, but come spring, back to the same spot, year after year, all times of day. In captive populations, if you have a species that just lumps in one spot and ambushes, you always want to start with super clean and then you can experiment with bioactive, but you have to be careful because they can get sick if it isn't 100% perfect. Some species are able to deal with more bacterial load than others. I raised the ones I had in multiple setups and paper towel ones did the best.

I’m always freaking out trying to make sure my enclosures are up to par and I’m doing everything right and this guy has frogs on paper towel in empty tanks that are thriving!!! Proves that keeping it simple is the best way to go!

I believe he explained in another video that he does this due to maintenance, with the number of animals he has he doesn't have the time to maintain bioactive enclosures, and found that keeping a clean enclosure was beneficial to the animals growth.

Yeah, it kinda bothers me that these TREE frogs are stuck in tiny tanks, on flat, white paper towels with nothing to climb up. They are accustomed to being able to climb up trees and hide amongst foliage. But here they are all out in the open, which may very well stress them out. Who knows ... I just wish there was something there for them to climb on.

I see a lot of people complaining about the enclosures, remember these are frogs, not humans. They dont get "bored" they care about not getting eaten, reproducing, and finding food. Any special enclosures or visually appealing vivs are for the sole enjoyment of the keeper. They just need a clean environment. Mike's setups are fine and I have gotten several frogs off of him and gotten the best advice. I dont have enough space to say all the good things about him. But nonetheless, he knows what hes doing his frogs are healthy and content.

@@WildGrowthChannel Another dumb comment. Of course they can't be released...vast majority are captive bred. The argument has nothing to do with owning the animals as captives. It's about giving them access to environmental stimuli to facilitate natural behaviors within a captive setting. Captive bred or not they still still have the same needs. You give them the choice through creating sections or portions of habitats. If you can actually create any sort of coherent argument based on a sheet a paper towel vs cork hollows, substrate, plants I'd be up for a good laugh. If this is how you actually view the hobby please surrender your animals to someone who actually cares about the well being and advancement of care.

Hey Dave, you do realize that you can take those Rainbow mealworms and Waxworms and Dubia roaches over to your Fishing Adventures Channel and use them on a little size 10 or 12 hook and some 2lb test mono with a very small bobber and one very small split shot placed on the line 18 inches above the hook and the bobber 18 to 20 above that, go to any well stocked farm pond in the country and catch bucket loads of bluegills or green sunfish for live Bass bait unless you catching pie plate crappies! Also works for Jumbo Yellow Perch !

Some of you guys commenting have 0 understanding how fragile these species are, adding decorations to their tanks increases surface area for bacterial growth, those tanks are cleaned and switched every single night, mike puts in more hours cleaning and supplementing with the proper nutrients, heat, and humidity than 99% of you smooth brains can comprehend. These are the healthiest frogs available in the US and I can speak from experience. This man has single handedly produced morphs that many of you wouldn’t have access to today without the work he puts in. Frogs don’t need enrichment with decorations they need clean cages and proper atmospheric conditions and nutrition. They’re not self aware beings they’re amphibians with limited capacity for understanding and 0 problem solving skills. They could give less cares about a plant. They eat, shit, and reproduce and without his efforts most of these species would be wild caught and full of parasites and bacterial infections guaranteeing death upon purchase or shortly after. This isn’t a hobby for your pointless emotions this is a hobby of science and constant upkeep and learning. His methods have proven beyond reasonable doubt that his care is beyond sufficient. Bioactive is trash and riddled with problems for almost all of these species. Just because you saw a planted tank on FB doesn’t mean it’s proper care. The science says otherwise.

As a biologist, I find these breeder tanks to be very upsetting. It's minimal effort on the breeders part for the maximum profit mentality. There's absolutely no enrichment present in the majority of those cages and sure the guy may have acquired a large collection of animals, but based on what's presented, they're hardly treated as animals, but as objects. Add one piece of enrichment, a cork bark flat, crossbars of foam pipe insulation, it's $2 at Lowes for 6ft ffs. Hold breeders to higher standards. HOLD BREEDERS TO HIGHER STANDARDS!

Honestly people like mike are the reason we have these animals in captivity and are able to combat the poaching of them in their natural habitat. Agree with you. I keep several of the species shown and yes, my setups are paper towels too (cleaned often) and relatively spartan, but they have some climbing branches, corkbark, potted pothos plants, etc Many of the nocturnal species prefer to have a hiding spot or hide in an area away from the light...or at least get away from crickets?

Cmon now...... Mike explained in detail why he is keeping some specifies on the paper towels solely. Obviously he is a complete professional breeder making these rare frogs available to others.... The frogs do not looked depressed. Many species are nocturnal and do not expel energy during the day... Keeping and breeding requires sterile conditions at times... Diseases can spread through a population rapidly if a pathogen goes unnoticed .. Pretty sure Mike knows what he’s doing and cares greatly about the well being of these rare amphibians....

You are correct and I understand that as a breeder he needs to keep the frogs in setups that prevent cross contamination and to keep the enclosures hygienic and that frogs need less of a complex enclosure than reptiles. I still think the could have some easy to clean decor but I understand his reasons and he is a very experienced breeder. Thanks for the comment🐸

Because bioactive enclosure require very little maintenance after they’re set up, and they get dirty and grow fungus’s and bacterias that can definitely be harmful to tree frogs… these setups your complaining about… Mike changes the paper towels, and cleans the glass and clean the water dish…. EVERY SINGLE NIGHT…. on hundreds of tanks… I have 40 Vivariums with dart frogs, and all I ever need to do is trim the plants and clean the glass a few times a year… so yeah you compare my tank routine compared to smokes for a year…. I’m a lazy F***

I’m not arguing he isn’t taking care of them. Clearly he is, he has amazingly rare frogs.. things that I most definitely wouldn’t know how to care for. I’m not challenging his years and years of experience. I’m challenging the lack of any enrichment. I mean there are sterile products that he could use to at least give them something to be on. All of which can also be cleaned easily. What’s good for the animal should be more important than what’s good for the keeper.
