Great video Mike...I noticed on several of his fly cultures he had domes on top. What was he doing there ?

That helps control the humidity, in Calgary specifically the ambient humidity is like 15%, the cultures produce faster and boom bigger with the domes.

We set 8 cultures on a plant nursery tray and build a moat using egg crate light defuser. And under that we use NO-Mite by dendrocare to keep unwanted mites away. We then cover them with the dome to retain the humidity. As Mike was saying it can get pretty dry in Alberta. We keep the domes on and regulate the air using the vents built in. Once the larva are crawling on the sides we remove the domes. I also mist each culture as needed - typically once a week , especially in the winter when the humidity drops to Zero! Also Under the trays we have heat mats to maintain a stable temp all year long We find the best production happens at about 23-25C and a humidity at about 60-70% While none of that is completely necessary for most people. We have just found that it’s more stable, no crashing, consistent, large production. Which when you’re feeding an army of frogs , plus supplying so many others that rely on us for flies and supplies … is super important. Thanks for watching!

Mikes correct. We made sure to clean the glass a couple days before. A little water, a clean plastic drywall trowel (or flat razor blade) and paper towel does wonders.

We do not have fans in or on our vivariums. We rely on the natural convection that happens. In the tanks. The cool air enters from the vents under the door, then naturally the warm air leaves out the top. This keeps the front glass dryer. For the house we have an HRV continually recirculating the air year round.
