Meet the Robot Helping a 12-Year-Old Attend School From Hospital | This Morning

12-year-old Howard is undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with a rare form of arm cancer. His treatment has meant his school attendance has fallen below 50%, but thanks to his robot ‘AV Howard’, he can now take part in lessons by reading worksheets, speaking to his teacher and classmates and accessing his education from home or hospital. Howard, his mum Hermione and ‘AV Howard’ join us live in the studio to explain why it’s not just his education the robot helps, but Howard’s wellbeing too.

I had one of these when I had been through some difficult life events and my mum had to pull me out of school to homeschool me due to my mental health being severely effected. The way they introduced me back into a school situation was by using one of these robots, I could interact with the class, the teachers and the lesson without actually having to attend a school as I was struggling. With support, i eventually went back to school and thrived. I was very lucky to have this piece of technology available to me and it has and will help so many children and young people. I wish this young boy the best of luck with his schooling, he sounds very smart ❤

@NoIsolation Thank you 😊 The AV1 really changed my life and turned what was a lonely, difficult time into a chance to learn and continue my education, while also interacting with my teachers and friends without having to put myself through the struggle of physically attending during that time in my life. Clearly a private school kid. Look at the way he is dressed FFS. This is known as privilege at its finest. There is absolutely no way this kind of provision would be provided in the struggling and underfunded state school system here in the United Kingdom. The quicker Keir Starmer adds more tax onto these privileged kids via their private school fees the better in my opinion. Edited to change autocorrect typo.

@@oscarleejames4874going to be honest. They’re on tv, Ofc they’re Going to dress fancy. You aren’t going to go on tv in pyjamas. Also the robot came from a charity. Charity is for anyone who needs it. It also doesn’t tend to cost money. This robot isn’t provided by the school so it doesn’t matter what school he goes to because the robot isn’t given to him by the school.
