What you don't say is a large number of vulnerable people won't have an option and will be directed down that route against their wishes and there will not be enough protection for these people, the care system don't care, the people who want to take their own life can do so before it gets to a point that they can't do it that is their option it appears that they want someone else to do it for them, like most probably everything else in their lives, two Doctors will put you under a death sentence to release a bed for illegal immigrants these days!?!

Assisted dying should 100% be a thing. If I was suffering from dementia/Alzheimers or some other chronic condition in my latter years, I’d rather be put to sleep on my own terms than becoming a burden to those around me. Wasting valuable resources, time and money keeping me alive to live like a potato with 0 quality of life. No thank you.

@@Sp3ar. Have you heard of the Austrian 'Angels of Death'? Maria Gruber, Irene Leidolf, Stephanija Meyer, and Waltraud Wagner were four Austrian women who worked as nurse's aides at the Geriatriezentrum am Wienerwald in Lainz, Vienna, and who murdered scores of patients between 1983 and 1989. The group killed their victims with overdoses of morphine or by forcing water into the lungs. They began by 'assisting the deaths' of terminally ill patients. However, it seems that they gradually found that the power of life and death excited, and ended up by terminating any patients who became nuisances, even if the nuisance was little more than asking for a drink in the night. If you give such powers to authority figures, they will, as authority figures do, inevitably abuse them, and you may well end up with compulsory euthanasia. All to benefit the victim, and for the greater good of 'society' of course. Doubtless, there will be a host of checks & balances, all of which will be quietly eroded in the course of time.

My great-grandmother was dying of cancer when I was a child. Her suffering was inhumane. She had zero chances for recovery, and have been on heavy dosages of heavy painkillers. If assisted dying would be legal back the in my country of origin, we could help her and do our last duties as asked by her. We of course couldn’t, therefore we had to watch her suffer daily. Sometimes assisted dying is an only option to act humanitarian…

I understand the sentiment behind wanting this but be VERY careful what you wish for here, because the state will use this to their advantage when they need to. Look for instance at what was revealed during the COVID Inquiry in Scotland and the use of DNR (Do-Not-Resuscitate) orders (check out Lianne Duffy Menzies's witness statement for instance). If you cannot see the potential for danger here, you are way too far gone.

Less than 6 months to live? Is that all? What about those people who have terminal dementia who don't want to live the last years of their life with no capacity and would therefore like to be put to sleep as soon as they reach that stage? Massive, massive strain on our resources and the NHS keeping those people alive who don't want be. Also what about people with serious life altering injuries that now have no quality of life? I researched the subject of euthanasia in great detail and gave a talk on it in college many years ago…and my conclusion was ‘NO’ it should not be ‘legalised’ as legalisation comes with many contentious issues…such as were experienced in Holland when euthanasia was legalised…for example when the person in question is incapable of communication…does this mean they do not have quality of life? Who decides this for them especially where there is the benefit of financial inheritance by the relative pushing for it…and when something is legalised everyone surely already knows that laws are eventually twisted and broken

Nope don't agree with it. Personally I think there needs to be something put in place so that people get paid to take care of their sick parents and their jobs are safe to go back to, obviously there is a point where it can become too difficult and a care home may be needed but for as long as you can physically help your parents I think it's down to us to look after the people that looked after us for years and then it's down to our children to look after us. I think the problem is that too many old or ill people feel like a burden on their family because they have important jobs etc but family should always come first. I know there are exceptions, people that really can't take care of someone or parents that might not deserve to be taken care of and even people that don't have any family, but I've heard of people so many times who are struggling alone and have children that could be taking care of them but their jobs are too important and I just think it's wrong.

That’s a very insightful comment. As someone who has observed end-of-life care closely, I understand the complex emotions involved. The question often arises: if patients are expected to endure significant suffering for additional months, is this truly in their best interest? It’s crucial for healthcare professionals to remain empathetic and resilient. Those who struggle with emotional exhaustion or a lack of empathy might need to seek support or consider different roles to ensure they can provide the compassionate care that patients at the end of their lives deserve.
