We've been given special access to the Defence School of Transport - the largest residential driving school in the world. Every year, 10,000 students from all three military services pass out through the school in East Yorkshire. Students learn how to drive a range of vehicles - starting on the 'white fleet', which includes ordinary cars and coaches, before moving on to the 'green fleet' made up of military vehicles.

Good old Leconfield ! Worked there years ago on the new SAR section hangar for the RAF. Shame they scrapped the SAR a few years later. Pain in the arse sometimes living around the area getting stuck behind the vehicles but you learn to live with it and them being on the roads 24/7

I remember RAF Leconfield closing in the late 70's. Its great to see such a historic base being re purposed for many more years. Traffics is a nightmare around Hull and East Yorkshire, though.

Who would want to live in or near Leconsfield?

I love to teach, proud for people learn things from me, I have a ton of patience, have license to drive from motorcycles to trucks and buses with trailer. Don't forget the honour I got in the military. 38 yo, father of two children. I would go for it, but also the money I would get at the end of the month is what gives.

What kind of maintenance do you need to know for driver in the army I have just applied and have no experience with driving will this be an issue?

Does this work the same a civilian driving tests with the theory and going on the roads, doing all the parallel parking, round abouts, hill starts etc? Would learning in the army be easier than wasting time and money on a civilian instructor?

You do end up with a civilian-compatible HGV licence, yes. A lot of ex army lorry drivers out there. Definitely would not say it's easier though.

Licence acquisition, tests, etc are exactly the same as found in the civilian world. No difference. the military have no exemptions in this respect. Defence Driver Examiners are subject to the same montoriung as their civilian counterparts [They will be civilian for the most part, anyway]. All controlled under the DVSA. At one time, the uK military [and Leconfield in particular] provided the UK's greatest number of CAt C & C+E drivers.

they have it too easy now with girlie type vehicles for barbie dolls, we used to have AEC mk1s and Bedford RLS and thornycrofts, where you had to double-e- clutch when changing gear, great trucks !

Ahhh you that had trucks had it easy! My day we had horses and mules, and if they broke down we carried ‘em back to camp on our backs. If they didn’t we were holding the reins of 10 teams of the animals in each hand to haul enough supplies to take on Napoleon-them was the days of men I can tell you, Nancy! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Leconfield (Leccy), we trained on the yellow perils back in 1990. First week in the classroom. Pass the exam. Then out on the yellow perils on the huge airfield with roadways and highway code signs on. If instructors were happy. We then Drove on the roads as far a Hull and surrounding areas (My injury flared up do RTU'd back to RCT). Once they passed the drivers test. They were HGV 2 qualified. But did the 3 to 7 day battle drivers course. How to drive in off road environments, how to field prepare and cammo the vehicles. How to drive in military convoy. Once all segments passed. They returned units, or to Buller Bks in Aldershot, for newly qualified B3 trained RCT Drivers. I arrived back at Buller. Was on 24 on - 24 off guard Duties. As waiting for posting. Some lads were readying for transport to 17 Port and Maritime Regt RCT (now RLC). So I said to the troop Sgt of Transit Troop/Block. I need to be on that transport. He looked up at me and shouted "since when do Dvrs (Ptes) ask Sgts to place them in a Regt. You'll go where your sent lad". No sooner had he finished. I ran my index finger along the transit block list on his desk. I found my name, and next to it was in big black bold letters "ALLOCATED MARINER MARITIME". The Sgt scratching his head, then looks up at me and says "How did I manage to get my. Choice of unit"? I said "Sgt I was a Jnr leader in the Royal Artillery in June 88. I ruptured my achilles tendon and either backsquad or rejoin at 18. So career's office made sure my records showed RCT Maritime.". We only need light vehicle licence. As we get trained as Seaman on Landing craft, Mexeflote rafts and small fast ribs patrol boats and work boat tugs. The Sgt said to wait in his office. 5 mins later he said I had 60 mins to pack, as mini bus leaving then. Wish I could've retried the HGV course.

No it’s because our coast guard are part of the rescue services: police, fire, ambulance, mountain rescue and coast guard. We don’t like to militarise everything like the states. We don’t let all our cops carry firearms. The Marines are part of the Navy unlike in the States.

@@ollietyler8332 Dude, The marines are apart of the navy people consider it (like the coast guard and space force ) to be its own branch On the other hand space force is apart of the air force. And that's why they're official names are "Department of the Insert name" because they can have different groups/branches inside them.

7 months to train to drive? In Fort Leonard Wood we train them in 6 weeks!!!

15 week phase 2 training then a further 25 day course for phase 3 training for the driver role, it’s to ensure they are competent and driving the vehicles, parading them, maintaining them at a basic level. More time on the vehicles never hurt, a lot of commonwealth citizens go through DST as well so it gives time to adjust

Oddly, some 20 years ago or so, the US Army sent observers to Leconfield to find out how to train drivers properly. This following disastrous events involving US drivers in the Middle East. UK Forces drivers are not just taught to drive. There are a multitude of other skills a military driver needs to be competent in , as well.

@@alastairqueen7973Name yet another claim about the "elite" British Army that did not happen? That one above. p.s. The actual reason why our school is short is because by the time our troops are 18, they've already been driving 2+ years and probably own their own vehicle.

@@drinksnapple8997 Prior driving experience [which is usually at odds with the required standards anyway] doesn't guarantee the acquisition of the licences in a shorter time frame. Also, British military drivers [which , in simple terms, mean almost every single soldier, sailor & airperson]...have to first meet [and pass] the civilian standards. Especially since, on the public Highways, they are subject to both civilian, and military, law. [BTW, my average time for a student to pass their C and C+E tests [They will already hold a car licence at this point, regardless of where it came from] worked out at about 7 days all in...That means they then hold a licence to drive large goods vehicles, with, and without trailers[which means, any type of trailer]. Once they get their licences, they then have to undergo training to convert a licence holder into a military driver. Alongside that they will be trained in the various types of vehicle their cap badge decides they need training on. Vehicle familiarisation courses [as a user, not just a driver] varied from 3 days or so, upwards, depending on the vehicle course....on & off road, by day & by night. Add all this together and one arrives at the longer timeframe, but will lead to a driver trained to a far higher standard than the US equivalents...Every military individual who gets behind the steering wheel of a military vehicle in the UK also knows how to 'read & follow a route card...and as passed a stringent assessment. This wasn't the case in the US Army, as several high profile cases proved. But it's nice to see the US military has finally achieved somewhere near the standards required of all those with licences in the UK armed forces...{It's a pity their wives didn't do likewise?}
