You can't pull them from the rabbit-hole without their help. Conspiracy theories are defined by the fact that believers can't even conceive of evidence that would make them stop believing the theory. Any such evidence is treated, instead, as deliberately-fabricated, thereby serving as proof that the conspiracy is even bigger than they originally thought. It's very much like when fundamentalist religion claims that evidence of evolution or deep time was planted by Satan to test true believers; believing despite evidence to the contrary becomes a laudable act of "faith", in their minds. Such people can't be reasoned-out of their unreasonable positions until they first accept the idea that they might possibly be wrong. To deal with the movement, we need to educate potential marks, staunch the flow of disinformation (looking at you, social-media firms), and counter their influence at the ballot-box with vigorous GOTV operations. Once it's no longer seen as an easy path to power and influence, the conspiracy theory will begin to die. One thing we have learned from the through-line from 9/11 Truthers to QAnon is that we must challenge conspiracy theories far more strenuously than we currently do, or they will fester and metastasize. No more treating them as harmless nonsense or platforming them as a legitimate counter to rigorous, evidence-based rational thought.

These sort of views need constant reinforcement to keep reality from intruding. So, to put it practically, cut off the reinforcements. Large social media sites purging QAnon-related stuff will and probably has already helped. And I know, that sounds like a disturbing solution. The fact that these private companies control the flow of online information bothers me and they shouldn't be in a position where they can effectively censor stuff. But here we are... As for what you can do personally, don't cut them out of your life (unless you really can't deal with them - you should try to take care of yourself). The way cults work - and QAnon has cult-like elements - is that they isolate their members from everyone else so that the members can only really find validation with other cult members. It's important to give these people some sort of link back to the outside world.

I have been so afraid of ALL of this (and more) since the onset of MySpace. I credit the very sweet, very unintelligent kid who showed me his MySpace account for the first time. He was so excited about all it could offer. Now, this was easily one of least intelligent people I’ve ever known (soooo sweet). I made up my mind then and there never to engage this thing which looked like an incredible waste of time! Then slowly I started seeing how truly insidious this thing could be. It wasn’t just a dumb way to waste time. It ruins relationships and marriages. It can interfere with ones career. It prevents people from pursuing much more worthwhile endeavors. It’s changed journalism and I don’t believe it’s changed it for the better. It compels people to constantly seek attention and approval from masses of strangers. I used to say social media almost felt like the perceived key to celebrity for billions the world over. Then it actually started producing celebrities. Now conspiracy theory meets social media. I don’t think we can handle as much as ten years.

social media by itself is not the problem, when you actually use it the way it was meant to, its a great tool for connecting. The problem is that it's also an ad platform and that's where it all breaks down. But nah, again because of the ad platform, and it there's no way it will be gone in 10 years. But lets say you remove ads from social media. where does that social media get its money from? Are you willing to pay a fee to use social media or other websites that normally use ad platforms to get their revenue?

@@VoodooV1 Honestly, as an artist and performer, I *would* be willing to pay for an ethical, ad-free social media platform that was JUST for connecting with other people in my field, and wasn't collecting my personal info for creepy corporate/government reasons. A lot of people are amazed that I'm not on any social media, but after a year or 2 of dealing with all the bs coming through my feed compared to the amount of useful connections made, it wasn't worth the hassle, and time spent. I might have missed a gig or two, but oh well. It's still not worth it at the moment.
