African parents are very intimidating especially when they are rich. they won't be rude but they just command respect. respect is key. because for an african girl who is raised right her parent's concent is very much needed because if they say no you better believe its a no. when you marry an african you are marring the whole family, divorce is not encouraged. African wedding is a parade ( for lack of a better word) that is why your parents give you time to make sure it's what you want. you can go on your knees to propose but its just semantics because the real engagement for we africans is a real ceremony between the two families. I just love my people.

David, I am an African, and I know how our parents can be. You made the right choice when you decided to go meet him yourself. African parents in such cases believe you have to come meet them, because you are the one that needs their daughter, they want to know how prepared you are; they feel that they are not supposed to come to you, you have to go to them. So, I think he was testing you....Good job, cos you passed his test.

Not every African dad want the happiness of their daughters. My younger sister brought home a loving and caring man who happens to be Igbo, my dad left home twice because he did not want to see my sister get married to an Igbo man. We are Yoruba, my dad who was absent in our lives and a Yoruba man should be the last person to refuse a man that clearly cares for my sister. He said he would only support my sister if she brings home a Yoruba man, he actually told my sister to flirt with any Yoruba man she meets. What kind of father is that? He treats us like we owe him something even if he was never there for us, according to him we should be the one apologising. So when you said every African dad, whoosh!!! That was a blanket statement David. I know you mean well dear but like every other continent, you have dads that cares and those that don't give a shit about if you are dead or alive.

+Victory Aiyeetan Exactly! We refrain from calling out bad fathers and mothers in many African cultures because it's seen as disrespecting our elders but the reality is that they do exist. My dad: love him but cannot call him a good dad overall. Also good you highlighted that for some parents it's not just about marrying outside your race but your ethnic culture. I know an Igbo girl who married Yoruba but it was a struggle for her parents. I also know someone from Bangladesh whose father disowned her for marrying a man from Pakistan.

+Victory Aiyeetan Perhaps he was retaliating (I am not sure how) because 'you're marrying out of the tribe may have seemed like a slap in his face' for the way he treated you guys. In other words, you wanted a different kind of man for yourself, because someone like him had done such a great job, being a husband to your mother and Dad to you!

I agree with everything you've said. I am currently in the same situation. My father said he won't attend my wedding unless I offer him some money! Outrageous right? Well, he swore he won't come and his family will not be present. This had nothing to do with my fiancé. He's from Nigeria too and even from the same tribe. African parents always like to steal the attention during a wedding planning and they almost never contribute to anything. Because of this embarrassing act from my father, I have sworn never to have anything to do with him agin. The prayer of every parent is to watch their children grow and get married. I had to offer my father some money before he agreed. Shameful right? I'm traumatized and my wedding it's a week away. I will never forget.

Having grown up both in Nigeria and abroad, all I read here are people who know nothing about their culture! Yes, African parents have their fault ( Who is perfect ) but I will not trade my Igbo- Nigerian heritage for anything in the whole wide world! My advice? Get to know who you are and embrace it! We are not all Caucasians. Cultures vary and rightly so.

Hi guys! First off, I love your channel :) I was wondering if you guys could maybe do a throwback series, where you would tell us stories from the early days of your relationship, like the one time David said he surprised you on your birthday when your relationship was long distance. Maybe also talk about identifying and enjoying your cultural differences, if you will. It would be great to hear those stories :)

Great video David! Now I'd really like to see Adanna's side of the story, like how we prepared her parents to meet you, how she approached the situations, reasons why they took a year to finally meet you etc :). I'm also African, and I would have no idea how to introduce my boyfriend to my parents if he was to not be African (and probably also if he was african to be honest haha).
