Check out everything you can because there's SOOOOO many secrets in this game, (SPOILER) also you can get a broom if you get an A or B in flying class ;) you can fly around the grounds and see rings and hoops and it gives you beans.

So glad you've come back to this game, and cannot wait to see where you're going to go with it. I think either L1 or R1 will be able t have you target things for you to cast at. If I'm coming back to a game I haven't played in a while, I find it helps writing down what the controls are and having it nearby when I'm playing.
