Hello everyone, I'm Hiro Morita and welcome to SUMO PRIME TIME! First, I want to thank each one of you from the bottom of my heart for checking our contents. We also love hearing from you so please keep those comments and suggestions coming! On this episode of SUMO PRIME TIME, we pay a visit to a rikishi who's known as "The Iron Man of Sumo". He's also the winner of the fall tourney in September. Yes, you know who I'm talking about and he is Tamawashi. He's the top division's elder statesman who'll turn 38 in November. That said, nothing seems to slow him down and in fact I think he's getting better and stronger with age. What I wanted to find out this time was the secrets of his toughness and durability, and also how he's able to keep himself in tip-top shape. He overwhelms his opponents with the devastating nodowa stiff arm attack and I wanted to learn some of the keys to successfully unleash his go to weapon. After receiving some tips from Tamawashi, it was time for me to challenge the iron man. Watch Tamawashi and I lock horns in the middle of the ring and see who comes out on top! Arigato always for watching SUMO PRIME TIME and we hope you enjoy the show!!

Hiro, thank you for your uploads! I love the more playful approach you have to show us Sumo in an easy light! I am a newcomer and interested in all the aspects of sumo! Also, astonishing how these giants from mongolia can learn the difficult japanese language too! How they do it? Greetings from Germany!

It's impossible to not love him. He's so powerful despite training in a stable where he really needs to invent new training methodologies in order to improve

Agreed, Hiro really is a specimen of a human!

Yeah when i heard he wrestled two or 3 guys at once it seemed odd. Seeing how small the stable is and how big he is I understand

He seems pretty accomplished in the sport. Sumo isn’t known for “inventing new methodologies” they are all in with the way they do it now, like 2000 years all in!

seriously, it seems like tamawashi wasnt holding back at all. hiro got FLUNG.

For anyone wondering, it sounds like Tamawashi is talking about engaging his lats, mid traps and rhomboids to stabilise his shoulder and arm while pushing, the same principle required to bench press well.
@BillHallProductions2 жыл бұрын
I found that super interesting. And when watching him attack with that in mind you can see him arch his back a little to engage those muscles.
@hakushoryu72122 жыл бұрын
I loved the first person perspective of the nodawa. It shows how scary and helpless it feels to be shoved back with that technique.

Wow, the staggeringly modest conditions of Tamawashi's stable make his accomplishments all the more impressive. The fact that he is able to compete at the highest level at such a consistent standard is nothing short of amazing.

Tamawashi seems so kind hearted, and it's amazing he's never missed a day in competition! I think an interesting video would be seeing how the mawashi are made! I know sumopedia has a short video on it but I think it would be interesting to be able to see the process more in depth!

How do these videos keep getting better when they were really good to begin with? Hiro, you are such a good sport to get on the dohyo with Tamawashi and show us up close what it's like. I really appreciate you work! I hope Tamawashi-zeki gave you some cookies later.

Had no idea Tamawashi only has 3 training partners! Those younger rikkishi looked so happy too, I love to see it! At least now with the covid restrictions lessened, rikkishi have been able to train at other stables. I hope Tamawashi gets more training partners to strengthen even more. Clearly his 3 training partners at his stable have been enough though!
@mrrhombus7162 жыл бұрын
Honestly there is something to be said about having fewer training partners. It allows Tamawashi a chance to build his own style exactly how he wants without constantly adjusting to a new opponent every bout.

Tamawashi seems like a very nice and knowledgeable man. His stablemates must be lucky to have him as a training partner. Also respect to Hiro for getting knocked around for demonstrations purposes. Really shows the strength and balance of the rikishi to send people flying without effort, and how impressive it is for their opponents to withstand them. As always thanks towards the sumo prime time team for bringing us these interviews and sumo coverage between tournaments. But if we're going to see these interviews with every tournament winner I'm hoping Takayasu finally becomes champion in November. Would be interesting to see what techniques he would demonstrate on poor Hiro.

Sumo Prime Time! I loved the last few videos. These were the kind of videos I was really hoping to see on here. We foreign fans really appreciate these! Tamawashi looks like he could push out a bear! It is especially interesting when you find out how small some sumo stables are and what the wrestlers do to over come that disadvantage.

I know very little about sumo, although thanks to Sumo Prime Time and ChrisSumo that is changing, but it's strange to see someone able to inspire themselves in training despite (from the look of it) being the most experienced or talented in the stable. He must have a lot of discipline and fortitude to compete at such a high level despite not having (again from an uneducated and external perspective) that constant competition and challenge in training. Arigato gozaimasu for the content and effort JSA

Well before Covid and now that restrictions are less severe Rikishi would train in other stables from time to time to improve thier skill3 against certain styles or even certain opponents, like how Chiyonofuji trained against Konishiki after having lost to him.

Hiro's got some muscle on him. He's no where near a small tiny man. Yet my man Tom grabs him from the ground like a toddler. What a wonderous and terrifying strenght he has. Mad respect for being one of the strongest ever at his age.

When he picked Hiro up, that was the highlight for me. Such strength picking up a full grown man like that, and then gently placing him down. Love Tamawashi - and Hiro is such a good sport.

At 35, the only time I ever feel old is when I'm watching commentary about sumo. ;) I mean I totally get it, doubly so given how young they start and how hard they train every day. Yet still, when I hear them talk about age in sumo I immediately feel motivated to have the most full day ever to make sure I'm not wasting any of my life, haha!

Excellent video. Tamawashi is such a cool guy--a gentle giant. He is very thoughtful about his sumo, not to mention creative when it comes to training. No wonder he can fight without significant injury. He seems to be a good teacher also. I wonder if he has plans to become a coach eventually. Hopefully that will be years in the future. I'd love to see him as a top division rikishi into his 40s. I would think that with his success, they could recruit a few more rikishi. The ones that are there sure get a bunch of individual attention, though. I wish we could have seen him bake or embroider something. He is a multi-talented individual. Maybe someday Sumo Prime Time can give us a peek into the rikishi's personalities and hobbies.

Love Tamawashi - his strength and sumo style is amazing, and his personality seems to be so friendly - he's always having a laugh and smiling outside the ring, and his creative hobbies just make him the epitome of a gentle giant. The fact that he helps his other stablemates and they all seem happy too, says a lot about the atmosphere of their training and their oldest rikishi. Gambatte for years to come, Kataonami boys!
