When you mention guns, the UK is definitely not the first place you'd think of. But, there are more than 700,000 firearm owners in Britain, and nearly 2 million guns. Some describe being a British gun owner as being part of a “secret community”, due to the stigma that is often attached. Benjamin Zand goes on a journey to meet Britain’s legal gun owners, and finds out why some of them want more access to guns in the UK.

That was really the other peoples fault. He should have be told the rules several times before even touching a firearm. As soon as he did that, everyone should have taken that gun away from him and sat him down for a good sanity check.

@mrgobrien
@mrgobrien 2 жыл бұрын
in the uk the gun laws are stricter in cities than in the countryside - 2 main reasons - there are more legitimate reasons to own one there (hunting game and guarding livestock from vermin etc) and also the much sparser population means any maniac can't shoot as many people than if running amok in a city. muhammad ali said he didn't like britain because of its narrow urban streets - and we are a crowded little island too - imagine someone firing guns along the centre of york or chester etc? they'd hit about 8 people with 1 bullet by chance alone.

@@mrgobrien Theres firearm ranges there and you dont even need a license to shoot the guns you only need it to own them (you can obtain a firearm license when you are 13 and shotgun licence when you are 16). Getting a shotgun license is a matter of having a gun safe and telling the police you want one, they aren't allowed to deny you unless they have a valid reason not to (your mental health etc) Getting a firearms license (rifles and shotguns with bigger tubes/magazines) is when you need to have a valid reason and being part of a gun club is reason enough. If you look are firearms offences shotguns and rifles are the lowest.. BB guns and air rifle offences are higher. The most common gun type used in crime by far are handguns and they are the hardest if not second hardest type of firearm to legally obtain in Britain with pretty much only museums and dodgy politicians being able to obtain them. The criminals make their own (sometimes 3d printed) illegally import them, or more commonly they steal them from the army and police. You can also obtain some firearms in the UK without a license at all namely a lot of guns that were made before the 20th century but criminals don't use them, I think in my entire life I've only heard about 2 people trying to rob a shop using guns from the 18th-19th century. At the end of the day its a cultural thing, even when guns were much easier to legally obtain they weren't used in that many crimes the only time that spiked was when they banned the use of firearms for self defence which led to a surge in violent gang crime in the 1950s and 1960s if I remember right.

No bad idea as a United States citizen we found out years ago that owning an automatic rifle it's a bad idea send me automatic I agree with full auto is bad years ago in 1989 before concealed carry was legal in Texas there was a shooting in a place called luby's cafeteria a madman with a fully automatic weapon that he legally bought before the 1985 automatic gun ban drove his pickup truck through the window of the place and he started shooting bang bang bang bang bang bang bang Susanna hup and her family was in there now misses hup had been carrying a handgun in in her purse for protection even though it was illegal it wasn't until 1995 it was legal and she said to herself I got him but then she realized that she made the foolish mistake of a lifetime instead of carrying her gun in her purse three months earlier she had stopped doing that because as I stated that in Texas at the time it was a felony offense to carry a gun in your purse or any other thing you were only allowed to use them at home for defense a bunch of people died she told her mom come on we have to get out of here somebody broke a window and said get out of here come on follow me while all that was going on Susanna got out but her mom didn't make it police told her later that her mom had crawled over to her dying father and hugged him and she was murdered the weapon the murderer used was a legal 1984 M16 a fully automatic M16 the same type used in the Vietnam war I am against full automatic weapons for civilian use Ronald Reagan side of law back in 1985 to ban them unless it was before the ban luckily most automatic weapons are now in the US cost over $4,000 semi-automatics are just effective as fully automatics with one good thing semi-automatic rifles eventually your finger will get tired and you'll have to pause it will never fire the same rate as an automatic I'm also against bump stocks if you remember the Las Vegas shooting in 2017 it was 100% legal to buy a bump stock which made a semi-automatic a fully automatic weapon I'm glad that they're now illegal as for the future of civilian automatic weapons in the United States the prices are only going to get higher and eventually only Donald trump money level people will be able to buy them and I'm glad

Not far more. I'd say they should still require a licence, but the variety of guns which are legal to own should increase. For example, shotguns with a magazine capacity of more than 3 should be allowed. Semi-auto pistols should also be allowed. All pistol calibres larger than 22LR. should be allowed. All of this should be under a licence of course. But machine guns aren't really necessary. Even in America, the laws of owning a machine gun are very strict.

I think you'd be less "sad" about how strict it is here if you'd have seen someone shot to death bro. I grew up in a country with far more lax gun laws, and I saw alot more gun crime, and misuse of firearms than I have in the UK. Don't get me wrong, guns are fun, and hunting, as opposed to supermarket meat, should be encouraged. But the less people have access to em, the happier I am. And sure, If someone really wants a gun to mess someone up, theres ways to go about it, laws or not. But the way I see it, the less we put on the market, the safer we are. Just my opinion.
@theilluminati7287
@theilluminati7287 3 жыл бұрын
@@geren546 guns are a free society's best defense against tyranny. Without them, or even without very many of them, a population is completely at the mercy of their government. Then when you compare misuse of guns to how many guns there are, it becomes clear that we shouldn't punish law abiding citizens for the actions of an extreme minority of the population. There are 30,000 gun deaths in this country every year, 2/3 of those are suicides, in comparison to around 150 million gun owners and 400 million guns. Thats 1 gun homicide and 2 gun suicides for every 15,000 gun owners and 40,000 guns. Now take into account that 60-80% of gun homicides in America are gang related. And if someone is so dangerous that they can't be trusted with a gun, why do we let them walk free to begin with? It is far easier for someone to use a car, which are used to kill people far more often than guns. Or knives, hammers, or hands and feet, all of which are used to kill more people than rifles of any type.

This is painful to watch. I worked in a gunshop for around 1 year, and my father has owned one for around 7. 1. This guy grabbed a shotgun and placed it next to him with the barrel pointing to his chin. Ridiculous. 2. A big chunk of the B-roll on this was air rifles. Which when under 12ft/lb you can own without a license. If one of those guns looked big and scary, it was probably an air rifle. 3. Most people who can get a gun in the UK can only get a small caliber bolt action rifle. Or a shotgun which can hold a maximum of 3 rounds. Above that it is classed as a section 5 and you pretty much can't get that license. 4. A good chuck of gun shops don't bother selling out dated caliber weapons. It is often a route criminals go down, shops now that, and they stay clear to avoid trouble. If anyone has any questions let me know!

The problem is that the people who make the laws have little to no understanding of what the role of a firearm is. Because the majority of the law makers are from urban environments, they are usually introduced to guns by hearing about them in the media as being an anti-personnel weapon rather that a tool or a 'toy'. We are having the same problem here in Canada with the government now trying to ban handguns and further restrict semi-automatic firearms of all types.

Right before that he said gun deaths are rare here. Our gun control is for the most part working and would be working even better if we weren't handing 7 billion pounds worth of revenue over to organised crime every year with our failed prohibition of drugs experiment. You might think the punish everyone to stop the crazyness of the few method of gun control is daft and unfair but the unfortunate truth is it's working better than anything anyone else is trying.
@Ironbuket
@Ironbuket 7 жыл бұрын
I agree with your point, but my personal view is that more guns in society would make criminals more likely to feel they need guns themselves whilst performing a criminal act and so create an arms race. If you were a criminal planning to rob a house and knew there was a high chance the person inside might have a gun (e.g. USA situation), you would pack a gun yourself and raise the chance someone is going to get shot. It's the same problem with arming the police, if all cops were armed then criminals would be obliged to be armed even for petty crimes also (USA again). As a criminal you can do plenty of damage with a blade, hammer etc. but you are far less likely to kill someone without that being your true intention.
@agent2861
@agent2861 7 жыл бұрын
+Ironbuket Actually, that's a really good argument. I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone else use it. It makes sense that criminals would be more likely to be armed if they were more likely to run into someone else with a gun.

Some 20 years ago four of us who were regular game shooters here in the UK went to USA for shooting holiday arranged by some American friends who had been here to shoot with us on and off. We all took advantage of the cheap prices at Walmart and bought semi automatic shotguns of various types and calibers. All perfectly easy and Legal. Declared at the airport, locked in a hard case. No problem. But British airways obviously thought otherwise despite us all having the correct certificates etc. Arriving back at Birmingham airport special branch and a platoon of uniformed police officers put us all in a restricted area and started to ask pertinent and non-pertinent questions about items we had bought back with us, it was obvious they were only interested in the firearms that we had. We all answered very politely and helpfully every question put to us and were able to satisfy them completely with the paperwork that we carried. I was very very surprised to see a special branch Firearm "expert"take the semi-automatic 2o bore shotgun I had purchased, from its hard case and without checking the weapon to make certain it was indeed unloaded, proceed to put the muzzle of the weapon to his eye and peer down the barrel. I immediately shouted at him inform him that he was an idiot, but in very impolite language I'm afraid, and his response was that he was checking to make sure response was

Only a year before, there was a communist uprising in Glasgow. Before 1920, many people used to carry a handgun for defense if they wanted, and a very large amount of rifles were kept by people, many of whom got rid of them when the 1920 firearms act said they would need a license.

Based on the current proposals for stricter gun laws going through the EU backrooms, we would never think about banning commercial trucks! Following the same logic as used with firearms, we would start a campaign to ban the SUVs we dislike for their high fuel consumption (and therefor already wanted to ban even without terrorism) claiming that they absolutely have to be banned as the tires are very similar to those scary large ones a commercial truck. And cars in shades of gray and green should also be banned because the look like military vehicles, as well as neon green ones, just as a precaution, we all it's common sense the color makes them more deadly. .. after all, the current proposals are based on the black market availability of cheap full auto AKs as used in the recent terrorist attacks, which have nothing to do with the regulation of privately owned firearms, will not be affected by any new law targeted at currently legal gun owners, and mostly come from the vault of 750'000 fully automatic military guns that got stolen in Albania in 1997... on a side note, In case people want to blame the UK gun bans on the EU. The UK has always been a driving force in pressuring the EU to adopt stricter directives on firearms, countries like Germany, France or the Czech Republic have much less restrictive gun laws when it comes to the types legal to own ...

@Lei P it's still very bad practice though, even if you know for sure that the weapon isn't loaded. You could be suspended from a gun club I know for even doing it accidently. The standard for safety and "gun control" is usually much higher within the gun community than without, and it's mostly people who are ignorant or stupid who judge the standard by their own mentality or practices and perceive the ownership to be much more dangerous than it is. I do think that this may only be true for the UK though, and have no idea about gun safety in other countries.

I can agree with that, and im sure the vast majority of people who own guns do so responsibly, but doesn't that mean the laws are working now and we've struck a balance? There's no demand for wide-reaching gun rights in UK beyond a small minority, gun deaths are incredibly low and most uk citizens would prefer to have a minimum amount of guns in the country. I have no problem with people sport shooting or even keeping them in their homes as personal protection, but I don't want any old idiot able to get one, carry them around town, to able to buy ridiculously powerful guns and I want those who already own guns to be responsible with them. I think the laws in place do just that and strike a good balance. The issue is there are gun extremist who will never be content unless any kind of weapon is publicly available with no restrictions or checks, that to me is utter madness as a gun is a powerful machine. Gun laws are a balance between freedom, culture, saftey, geography and specific to each country. In a country with a very small fringe gun culture where the vast majority of the public would rarther go about there lives without ever thinking about guns then kind of tough regulation is what has to be done to democraticly please the populous. the 95% are not gonna want to feel in danger for the 5%

Where the fuck do you think they get guns? There isnt some imaginary black market or stall around a back alley, restricting access to guns, restricts access for all. I mean, come to the UK and try to find a gun, good luck on that one because you are going to have one hard time. This is why it works, a criminal wants to rob a store, he knows he cant get a gun because where is he gunna get it from? There's no stores, there's no stall inside Tesco (like walmart has). Unless you are a very hard, mafia style gangster and have extreme connects, it's not happening. I have never seen a gun in real life and my town has 30,000 people and there hasnt been a shooting in over 20 years, the UK also has the highest concentration of CCTV that leads directly to the police stations, if you have gun out in the open, expect the armed response units to be pointing G36's and MP5's in your face within 5 minutes. Gun controls works.

It is so lucky cars don't kill people in the UK otherwise you would need a license to buy and own one and be over a certain age, you would also need a license to buy fuel.

Wow, here in America you could go to a local super market (Walmart) and buy chips, soda, and a rifle in the same store! I love America.

While I do admire the freedoms that Americans have with regards to firearms, I would not desire to see people being able to purchase firearms without a license in the U.K. because I know too many people that would be downright irresponsible and jeopardise our sport.

I like how at 8:20 you went from homicides to deaths because you wanted to include suicides in the number.

@@Matthew-Anthony Something along the lines of two thirds usually. CDC's most recent numbers are 14,542 firearm homicides in 2017, including all justified homicides done in self defense by regular citizens and law enforcement. Firearm suicides in 2017 23,854. About 67% more. Which brings the total killed by firearm in 2017 to 38,396 , 61% of which were suicides. So excluding suicides, the US had 4.47 gun homicides per 100,000 in 2017. Now beating us out but staying under 10 per 100,000 is Uruguay, Paraguay, Mexico, Costa Rica, South Africa and the Philippines. Even Venezuela, which only has 18.5 guns per 100 inhabitants compared to the US's 120, has a gun homicide rate of 26.48 per 100,000. So clearly, it isn't the gun that's the problem.

No Name I’m pretty sure 50 cal Barretts are legal in the UK, so long as they’re bolt action. There’s probably only a handful of shooting ranges that are large enough for them though.

No Name you can own a .50 BMG bolt action rifle no problem in the UK with a section 1 firearms certificate if your safe is large enough to store it and you can find somwhere to actually shoot

I don't think it works that way. Usually a specific license is for that specific firearm. Check Google and research to find out the answer they aren't gonna know here
