Meeting U.K. Subs - Interview with Charlie Harper

As said at the the end of the interview, he's a great supporter of new bands. Shortly before Rebellion, I went to see Rumkicks in Brighton, and he turned up with his wife, and chatted to them before the show, and they were thrilled.

Next time I saw him was again at the 100 club basically same seat at the bar , but he wasn't playing, he came to watch the meteors, he recognised me and we started chatting like we'd known each other for years. I spent years traveling around the uk and Europe with the meteors, but if i could go back i would make time to go to more Subs gigs .

Subs would play anywhere they felt welcome. The came to a outa town pub in Merthyr Tydfil in darkest S Wales in the 80s. The bar staff let us brew mushrooms in the kitchen after the gig and everyone had a mad one. Heddwch / Peace and Punk from Independent Tropical Merthyr.

I've bought him a few curries and beers over the years, during the Nicky Garrat years. First saw the Subs back before CID was released. He is a true gentleman and legend.

Charlie and I met in 92 at Spankys Cafe, Riverside Ca. I bought him a Heineken & myself, we took a photo giving cheers. My friends band Old Nick opened Oi Charlie... CiD

Really lovely genuine down to earth guy , even at their highest Charlie would be sitting at the bar having a beer Happy to chat with anyone. When i first met him it was 100 club , sitting at the bar , just a regular guy , no pre madonna BS, if you didn't know who he was he wouldn't be the one telling you who he was or acting any different to anyone else. He looked completely different ( like all of us from back then) dark curly hair with some dreads .. Lovely lovely guy 🍺🍺🍺 Loved subs version of "she's not there" . After hearing it my band added it to our set list ..

Wikipedia has Charlies age as 79,I thought he was older than jet black.

Its funny how at 32 in 1976 he was classed as too old, tbh I probably thought it, I was 14. The late 70's was about pulling down the old guard and a musician in his 30's would have been treated with suspicion. There were others that thankfully slipped through the net despite age such as the Stranglers and Blondie ect..
