Great content as always I have the new mux and fitted Berima diesels throttle controller it was under $300 . Honestly an excellent addition for towing much more responsive. And with a proper tune I have seen amazing fuel and power gains. Yes I understand you shouldn’t have to do this but it really changes the whole car

Great video thanks Paul. I have the V6 Ranger Wildtrak and have been towing a 3t caravan for several months (10,000kms) I blew a turbo (a bearing failure) after 1700kms. Ford NZ looked after us with not only fixing it quickly but paying for our accommodation while we waited for the repair. Still love the truck, great for towing. I get 16lt per 100km while hooked up. If I was to pick a SUV to fit into a budget it would be the Everest but if I had a larger budget it would have been the LC before watching this video, now it would be the defender. Great job.

I have a Y62 and love that unit more than anything I've ever owned, but this video has raised 2 points for me. Firstly, I'm surprised at the SAG factor, because it's a common feeling among Y62 owners that they NEED stiffer rated springs or airbags to tow a half decent load, yet in this test it performed very well in that respect. 2nd is that the Defender shocked me with its performance, and purchase price and drive satisfaction aside, I'd happily concede that it's a better tow vehicle. Very impressed.

But on a serious note thank you Paul for providing us with a very comprehensive test, like I've seen other channels do this and the off-road test especially the off-road test, I've seen many Australian channels doing tests to find out the better off-road vehicle and they claim to have off-road experts that will tell us which car is better off-road but the don't even show the cars during the test they just show a 5 second video of the car and then the "off-road expert" comes and say why X car is better but we never see the car during the test some nonsense test that just shouldn't exist.

Great review. Just wondering if you put the trailer dimensions on to the Defender 110 infotainment, it helps the suspension to adjust to your load for better towing. I've got the 110 P400 and I'm currently towing an off-road caravan with a DO35 Hitch with no wheel cover, so I don't have the issues you did. Plus, I travel solo, so the towing camera is perfect for hitching on. I get around 18-19 litres/100km on the open road. Would have loved to see the V8 110 out there again. Looking forward to the next reviews.

My Tacoma is the basic 📦 doesn't have any of the 360° 📸 no sunroof no leather or heated 💺💺 I guess if it doesn't have all those goofy features that I probably wouldn't use that's less shit to break down the 🛣️ mine came with all-weather floor mats, side steps, 🛏️ lights, exhaust tip & mud flaps those are just small little additions & make the 🛻💨 look pretty clean & I added the MX4 aluminum tonneau cover & tinted the windows. So you don't know what's in the cab nor don't know what's in the 🛏️ the best thing of all I added the RCI steel transmission skid 🍽️ with 🐈 shields so none of the tweakers can get to my catalytic converters! It's just a mild setup with just a few personal mods that I wanted but I think the Tacoma is VERY beautiful (stock AF) does not need a lift maybe just go to a 265/75 16 10ply tire up from the 70 series tire gives it a 1-in bigger so then you're running on 32-in tires truck is good to go! The only lift I would ever do is the factory TRD lift because you start getting into some wild shit and I don't want my 🛻💨 fucked up. Most people drive their trucks on the street but set them up for off-road 🤔 seems pretty idiotic to me lol unless you're out there off-🛣️ all the time. I would hit more grinds & miss shift in those civics then I would my Tacoma I only did one little grind in my Tacoma so far & that was because of me. These 4 cly models especially, change up gears too early when towing. If worked manually I think most would have reached 100 if left in a lower gear and used a few more revs. Example, the MUX changed up about 700rpm below the redline and then fell into a power hole. Even a diesel needs to rev to get hp towing at speed and up hills.

I'd take Patrol or Landcruiser over Landrover when comes to towing because boot door. Top opening doors allows you open it with trailer attached also makes reversing so much easier especially boat down a ramp where you see where it is tracking. This is why I prefer wagons over utes. Relibility wise best sell Defender before factory warranty runs out. Patrol extra fuel costs can be offset against lower service and purchase price compared to Landcruiser. $20k buys lot of fuel can also add $1000 a year from 5% interest that extra $20k could be earning if invested or $1500 if you have to borrow money. Like piece on vehicle payload, people forget to add trailer's drawbar weight when calculating this.

I expected that from the Rexton, but the huge surprise is how woeful the Pajero Sport is, even with no load on. Wow. And there are so many on the road, surprisingly. Another thing to note with these tests, you have a 2800kg van on the back, but haven't loaded up the car with the family, luggage, etc.... There is no way the Pajero Sport could tow 3100kg, especially with anything in the car.

Fascinating test, well done. I have been pulling trailers for most of my life as a farmer now in my late 70s. I once owned a VW Touareg V10 5ltr diesel which was excellent on the road & usless on the land. I also owned a couple of Subarus Forresters which were brilliant all round 2ltr diesels. I currently own a Skoda Enyaq IV80x which is a full electric & tows very well & stable with all that low down weight its very stable & has loads of torque. One of my interesting jobs was contract harvesting from Roma Qld to Horsham Vic. Our support vehicle was a Toyota LC Ute 4ltr 6cyl, but all this was back in '87. I'd love to tow the Dyna trailer with my Skoda, but we don't have any in Ireland.

Had my eye on a Pajero Sport GSR, not so sure anymore. I certainly wouldnt be towing with these loads, but there are some other issues with power and braking that are giving me second thoughts. Even with a 10yr warranty. Great test, thanks for the amazing breakdowns.

I tow 2.8t with a Triton. The 8sp would be an advantage I think. Having said all that, power wise the Triton copes fine at typical NZ towing speeds of 90km/hr. It is working when you push it or there are steep hills. We tested the PS and disliked the soft suspension. Some better shocks I think would make a world of difference.

I've ordered a Pajero Sport GXL. Will not be towing a 2800kg van. I think the lesson for those vans that wobbled around and struggled with the heavy trailer, tow a lighter trailer or buy a heavier and more powerful, and thus more expensive towing vehicle. I have a folding Avan which will probably weigh about 1100 kg with some payload. It should perform better than the combo in the video.

The Lexus LX600 uses a full time 4WD system with a 40/60 rear split. So the side with the least traction spins more. It relies on a torsen LSD to control that. Also its exactly the same as the LC300. The difference is the squat

Great Video. One thing to add to the video would have been reversing, Maneuverability and vision from mirrors with larger trailers. I currently own a D300 110 Defender and tow a car on a trailer regularly. Have to agree with the comments. I've never had an issue with the tow hitch hitting the rear wheel though. A Handy point with the Air suspension for long tail trailers, being able to lower the Car (raising the rear of the trailer) when negotiating steep approach angles to reverse up steep drive ways. This is priceless. Prior to the Defender, I towed with a Skoda Kodiaq RS (diesel version) and I have to say it towed even better than the Defender (particularly in reversing maneuvers) Vision from the side mirrors was excellent and torque and economy for a little 4 Cylinder it was amazing even accelerating when overtaking up some of the inclines of the Hume Highway back from Golborne into Sydney and an average fuel economy under for 10L/100km round trip Sydney --> Marulan and back. Great Video.

Very good testing you did. A test from say 60 to zero with un-braked trailer to see how good the car’s brakes are with an un-braked load pushing from behind. Although that test might be pushing the limits of safe testing, due to possible jack knifing.

We did think about that, but it wouldn't be safe so we used an unladen load for braking as a benchmark.

Enjoyable vid - and such detail and hard work! Not surprised the Defender won. I have a 2011 RR TDV8 which I use for towing my daughter's horsebox and our local AD offered me a Defender 110 with the V6 engine - like the one you tested - for a long weekend. The RR is a great tow car so I was a bit sceptical at how the drop in torque would work but I was very surprised at how well it performed. Yes, the Defender doesn't have the RR's road presence and doesn't make you feel as special when you're driving it but it's a very capable car and if I were replacing my RR I'd definitely consider it.

iterestingly, recently went to put a rack system on the roof of my car, after accounting for the Rack weight of 60kg, It only left 40kg of additonal payload weight, was better (and cheaper) to just put traditional roof racks on. As with Towing, Roof Racks are something that are often over loaded.

A couple of suggestions: 1) As you did the tow test with a 2800kg trailer with 280kg towball weight it would have been good to have done a run through of the vehicle weights using a 2800kg trailer as a reference; 2) It would been good to see that wider camera view of all the vehicles as they went through the bumpy section with the trailer attached. Other than that I thought it was a great video and will be recommended as reference to many when I'm asked about picking a tow vehicle.

Am I the only one that was pleasantly surprised with the Grand Cherokee's steep slope climb ? It accelerated very well and was keeping on going. The Pentastar is very reliable as well, Getty Adventures (heavy duty mechanic) made 2 interesting vids about this engine. It bviously isn't a very good towing vehicle as of now, but at least as a car it ticks many boxes.

So you put the Rexton in Power mode with the large trailer but not the LC300 (Sport). You should be using either Normal or Sport/Power on all vehicles rather than different modes on different vehicles. Also with the Rexton cruise-control, might have been best to just manually change it down a gear to hold the speed. I think you’d find it difficult with the 3500kg max towing vehicles to actually tow that with the family on board. In many cases you can only have the driver and ½ a tank of fuel before you’re overweight. But anyway. With the Defender you can disable the Access Height on power off when you are towing and re-enable it after. Most people don’t tow every day. Would have been nice to test with the P400 Defender 110 also. In the section at the end - probably should note that’s GVM also includes the towball down weight. (Though it was touched on in the Pajero Sport breakdown example). Lastly - can’t wait to see V8 Defender, Discovery 5 and Range Rover.

Can't wait for you to test some electric utes or SUVs. Of course they lack the range, especially when towing a trailer. But I'd love to see how their impressive performance figures translate into towing and how their high weight and low center of mass affects ride quality and stability when towing heavy loads.

I’ve watched this and the off road test. I’d expect something like the Land Rover to do well considering it’s pedigree and also new tech that has developed over the past 10 years in drivetrains and electronic assistance systems. What I find hugely commendable is how well the Patrol did on both, especially considering the age of the platform and the length of its run cycle. Almost disappointing that other brand new platforms with greater tech are only just beating it, if at all. I’d buy a Patrol before a LR based on reputation and reliability. If only Nissan could bring the dash etc into 2023!😁

A comprehensive test with great consideration to experimental design. And mentions of little things like the effect of GPS speed vs indicated cruise control 100km/h on fuel economy showed you were thinking about some of the variables which are difficult to eliminate. Kudos. I tow with an old Audi SQ7. Effortless performance and outstanding fuel economy from a car worth way less than some of those on test.

Fantastic comparison, and quite comprehensive. Defender definitely looks to have done a great job, as have the usual contenders, Patrol and Landcruiser. It’s disappointing that the Jeep Grand Cherokee, once a great towing option, falling way down the stack. Looks to be a nice package, but really needs the turbo diesel back, or the new straight 6 turbo, or V8. Little surprised the Everest V6, while it did reasonably well, didn’t perform a bit higher too.

As a Fortuner owner is was interesting to see how it would perform under tow load, there was a couple of things that gave me pause. The first was the gear selection when towing, toyota recommend (its in the manual)you have sport mode selected in the gears and lock in 4th. Potentially the towing experience would have been better for the review, just to balance out the test given in the Ford Everest tow mode was selected. The second area which creates a lot of energy is tow capacity rating, given legal weights to tow on the Fortuner personally I wouldn't tow anything greater than 2.5 tonne just to accommodate ball weights and car payload.. The question is was the 2.8 tonne trailer rated at that weight or was that the actual load?

Hi Great test and nice engineering approach. I have found it very difficult to find information such as the GVM, payload, GCM etc for many vehicles. It doesn't seem to be easily findable on the manufacturers' websites. Are you able to somehow advise the information for each of the 4WDs that you tested. This is an important safety issue, and I think the industry doesn't take it seriously.
