Although not as good as the Mega Drive port of Street Fighter II but still, this version of Fatal Fury 2 is overall well made and interesting with the 4 bosses being playable + its new combo possibilities. A port that has more than the arcade in terms of gameplay. Combos, 1 button after super motions, rather than 2, lower damage output so battles last longer, playable bosses, a hidden dipswitch option that can enable Tekken style juggling. Let's just hope somebody hacks this game and turns it into Fatal Fury Special, with the extra stages, characters and music. And Ryo is playable, balanced and with predetermined AI
@Bloodreign16 жыл бұрын
SNK games have never relied on juggles, this was Takara just getting cute, and there was no need for juggles, so I prefer the arcade version. As for comparing juggles in this to Tekken, that's an insult to Fatal Fury 2. I'll play an SNK fighter any day over Tekken (could never stand Tekken) If one wanted juggles in those days, one played Mortal Kombat. If one wanted combos, they'd play the later Fatal Fury games, and the later KoF games. When I play this game from my collection, I don't play with those cheat codes on, as they don't feel natural for an SNK fighter at all.

The mainland multi-lingual European release was cancelled by Sega Europe as a consequence of the European Mega CD fiasco cutting a lot of funds which cancelled many releases (along with this, it also did the same with Golden Axe III, Tecmo Cup Football Game and several Namco titles) and in this case, it seems it survived a very very very very limited and scarce UK release with English only box and booklet (there are some certain UK Mega Drive releases like this, different to the more common mainland European counterparts) but is is very very very very hard to come by. I've been used to the arcade version for so long that the music of the Genesis version sounds like someone trying to re-create the original music with a 1980s Yamaha toy keyboard. That's basically what the sound hardware of the Genesis is, by the way. Arcade hardware of the 90s was moving toward samples (like the Amiga and Super Nintendo) and away from that old synthy sound and sounding more like "real" music. SNK was betting so much on the Neo Geo that they only cared about getting passable ports of their games on SNES and Genesis.
@ArtofZenDigital Жыл бұрын
You’re incorrect on many levels. The Genesis has a higher sample rate when properly used. The SNES uses assist chips to handle the sound in a lot more games than you think. The best sounding SNES game is Secret of Mana. That game uses an assist chip for sound. The SNES samples sound at bellow 22hz. That’s horrible, the result of using such low samples is actually muffled audio that sounds like it’s coming out of a blown speaker, or even worse, underwater. Where most ports decided to use the SNES approach, as in, taking the low sample rate 8 channel sound chip of the SNES, and porting it using the lowly Gems sound driver that was used for 1988 MegaDrive games, which results in terrible audio, the Genesis actually has better sound when used properly. The Genesis actually has more sound channels than the SNES and plays audio in 3 formats, FM Synthesis, PCM, and PSG. This is due to using the 4 channel Sega Master System Sound Chip on the Genesis motherboard for backwards compatibility. It can be mixed with the Genesis 6 channel audio chip when the terrible Gems driver isn’t used. Even your beloved Nintendo, based on the official Nintendo Power openly admits that Best Sounding Game of the entire 16 bit generation is non other than Streets of Rage 2. If you don’t believe me, here’s the quote, that, “Yuzo Koshiro is arguably the greatest game-music composer of the 16-bit age.” Yuzo Koshiro scored legendary Streets of Rage 2. Tommy Talreco also openly stated on his KZbin channel that many of the games he scored, simply sounded better on the Genesis. For reference, he actually utilized all 10 sound channels in a lot of the multi-platform 16 bit era games he provided music for. If it was actually used correctly, the way the Genesis used MIDI was impressive. It reduced music storage space on carts significantly. The problem is, once the SNES became the lead platform for certain multi-platform games, it was much easier to simply cram low sample rate audio onto the Genesis, which actually took up more space than it would on an SNES cart, largely due to how each console handles sound differently. If space became an issue, game devs would simply remove samples to make them fit, and use 6 audio channels to avoid coding additional sound effects that run on the extra 4 Master System audio channels. If you doubt that the Genesis had more channels of sound then the SNES when Gems wasn’t used, simply watch The Making of Streets of Rage 2 on the StrafeFox KZbin channel and you’ll see it for yourself. Shutting off the Master System sound chip will kill the overdubs in Streets of Rage 2. For reference, using modern tools, when the SNES tried playing back non Gems Tools Genesis game’s sound, it sounded awful and muffled. You can also see the Tommy Talreco quotes to get confirmation about how much better instruments like guitars sound on the Genesis than the SNES without the low quality Gems sound tools. As someone who owned both systems, I’m honest about when something sounds bad, and yes, most multiplatform games that weren’t made with any care for the Genesis sounded worse. There’s also no SNES game that has longer pre chorus loops than Sonic 1 or Sonic 2. Both games have crystal clear sound and music, utilizing 10 channels of audio. The sample rates are higher too . The green hill theme in sonic 1, which isn’t even a large Sega cart, loops after 1 min and 19 secs. This isn’t possible with multitracks on the SNES without a sound assist chip because the samples take up too much space on the SNES carts. Mortal Kombat 3 on the Genesis, which was a relatively competent port compared to the awful Probe Genesis ports of 1 and 2, uses the awful Gems sound driver. The sound effects may all be present compared to the first 2 games on Genesis, but the signature Gems drivers are in full effect. Now, compare that to Sonic or even Streets of Rage 2. It’s an embarrassment. Listen to Robocop vs Terminator on Genesis, the music is 10 channels, as is the music in Lightening Force. Both games feature guitars, and crystal clear voice samples. The samples play back on the sample channels on the Genesis, with the audio played back via MIDI. It takes up less space, but still manages to sound clearer than SNES games with sound assist chips present. If you doubt the number of games SNES had with sound chip assists, it’s close to 100. Google is your friend. The Genesis didn’t need sound chip assists to sound clear when the game devs knew what they were doing, and what they had when the Mega Drive and the Master System sound chips were used together to produce 2 more sound channels than the SNES. Also, travelers tales pulled of better sound and graphics in the Mickey mania port for the Genesis. All of the effects that required mode 7 on the SNES to even do, such as the tower and the moose chase, were done in software on the Genesis, a system designed in 1987, and released in 1988 in Japan, vs the SNES, which was released much later on. The SNES CPU is so slow, that Mickey Mania on the SNES has loading times. That’s correct and confirmed. The SNES has to decompress the stages from the cart before each stage begins, hence, it has a little in between stage animation while this occurs. Being a fanboy deters from objectivity. It’s nice to know that even Nintendo Power, a magazine fully funded by Nintendo, and for Nintendo fans, can actually acknowledge what you can’t. The Genesis to this day, still has the best sounding 16 bit game. On a last note, Secret of Mana’s official soundtrack refused to use the music off of the sound chip assisted SNES mode 7 graphics assisted cart. When asked why, Squaresoft, which is Square Enix now, basically admitted that the low sample rate of the SNES using faux symphonic sound, essentially great for the system, butchered the classical music compositions. By comparison, the game that actually had the clearest sound and music of the 16 bit era, Streets of Rage 2, actually used the native Sega Genesis music for the official CD quality soundtrack. They didn’t need to remaster, or re-record it because it didn’t sound like it was coming out of a blown speaker that’s sitting underwater.

@@ArtofZenDigital Judging by your long TL;DR comment, it sounds like you're more of the fanboy. You've obviously gone well out of your way to confirm your confirmation bias. I've played through all 3 Streets of Rage games, I'm familiar with the music of Sonic 1 and 2. I've also played Castlevania Bloodlines. It still doesn't hold a candle to the awesome music like Lockjaw's Saga and Run, Rambi, Run from Donkey Kong Country 2, or Illusion Dance from Castlevania Dracula X. If anything, the SNES's use of "Assist Chips" as you call them only feeds my belief as to why the SNES had better games. The SNES was, in fact, built with expansion in mind since a lot of the "assist chip" carts had those extra pins. EDIT: This is called an indent, learn to use it. It will make your long essay comments easier to read. So your long essay got very off-topic. I was talking about how 90s arcade hardware switched from the synths in 80s to samples in the 90s, and the Genesis still predominately used synths. Even Streets of Rage 2 which you so highly praised. Samples in that game were used for the sound effects, which is why whacking enemies with a pipe has a more meaty "bash" sound instead of the farty sound the Genesis normally has. I still prefer the sound in Batman Returns where every hit is a meaty "bash" sound. Most of what you talked about is what I already heard from other KZbinrs. One of them even admitted that the SNES was more foreward thinking despite preferring the Genesis. I WAS a Nintendo fanboy back in the day, mostly because I hated Sega's attack ads. Nowadays though, I hate Nintendo's business practices. Since I got a used Genesis, I discovered many gems I never played back in the day. That includes SoR 2. I played Final Fight 2 for the SNES, but SoR 2 is definitely better, mainly because it can put more than 3 enemies on the screen at a time and gives you more attack options than just combos, throws, and super moves that drain your life meter. I have no trouble admitting when Sega does it better.

@@ArtofZenDigital You're also missing something else, The Genesis had only one sample channel whereas on the SNES, every channel was a sample channel. As a result, SNES games had sounds that sounded more like real world sounds instead of the old fashioned beepy, video gamy sound effects of older systems. The Genesis had more old fashioned synthesized sound with only a few samples for things like voice clips and a few sound effects.

Wrong!My opinion is the right opinion nah just kidding.But i can`t believe you think this version look better though lol.This version looks like a Sega Master System game but with bigger sprites then we usually see on a Sega Master System game.But like you insinuated to each is own.

It Does Not Look. Look For Fatal Fury Special GG.

Indeed, it looks quite simple and grainy with less colors, but it plays well. The SNES version looks more like the original, but the gameplay isn't as good. Fatal Fury Special on SNES is the best choice, graphics, sound and gameplay is very arcade accurate!

Some soundtracks are okay imo, but the SFX and samples are really awful. The hits have no impact at all, it sounds like a scratch or something. I'm not a big fan of the Genesis' soundchip, but it can be done so much better than this...

@@greensun1334 Don't say that truth to the Sega fanboys tho lol The colours look washed out on this port as well.

The SNES version looks better but it plays worse, forget it! If you wanted a SNK fighting game homeport back then, the 32meg Fatal Fury Special on SNES was the best choice. Graphics, sound and gameplay are really good and quite arcade accurate.
