The Mach e is like the lightning it doesn’t have the charging speed to keep up with the 200kw cars and trucks. Maybe a race with identical cars would be nice then it would be about the driver. Kyle needs to set up a race when Farrah picks up his Macan Ev!
@newscoulomb37057 ай бұрын
3:31:46 I think this was the big takeaway from this trip. Both the Cybertruck and the Silverado EV were letdown by their respective charging infrastructure. V3 Superchargers are just underpowered for the Cybertruck, and while Electrify America has the best coverage of any public charging provider, most of their chargers and even charging sites struggle to actually supply 500 A to 800 V EVs. E-GMP cars are really threading the needle because they can benefit from the 800 V chargers while not requiring them to provide more than 350 A.
@danielzhang19167 ай бұрын
yeah, this was an infrastructure failure, it's crazy that they were basically tied until the end, if the Cybertruck had enough power, it would have been so close, but the Silverado had the bigger battery and pulled it off to win
@newscoulomb37057 ай бұрын
@@danielzhang1916 It's not just the bigger battery. The fact that the Cybertruck couldn't charge past 30% in order to maintain the same average charging speed as the Silverado EV maintains to ~60% put the Cybertruck at a serious disadvantage. That means the Cybertruck needs to make four times as many charging stops just to hope to keep up, and any charging past 30%-40% or reduced power from the charger pretty much negates that. If Team Silverado didn't have such a sub par experience with the public chargers themselves, they would have finished a couple hours ahead. So no, not "just a big battery."
@danielzhang19167 ай бұрын
@@newscoulomb3705 yeah I know, the Cybertruck had a disadvantage from the beginning, they had to keep pulling over
@ronin76457 ай бұрын
@newscoulomb3705 - Tesla launched the Cybertruck with conservative charging speed. I guess to play it safe. They just announced today a 20% speed increase in charging for the cybertruck through a software update. My guess is they'll even increase it more thru another update at a later time.
@newscoulomb37057 ай бұрын
@@ronin7645 Perhaps, but that would still leave it trailing the Silverado EV 3WT by a considerable margin. Even if, after the update, the Cybertruck could maintain the same average charging speed as the Silverado EV 3WT to 50% or even 60%, it would still need to make 50% more charging stops on a longer trip just to maintain parity. And that's the 3WT, not the big battery RST or 4WT, which average 250+ kW all the way to 70% to 80%. Also, as hobbled as the Silverado EV was by the public charging, the CT suffers even more on the Superchargers. Even with V3 operating at 100%, the CT can't charge at its fastest speeds, and it appears as though the CT will put a V3 cable into limp mode after only 10 minutes at full power. CT owners basically must use the public charging infrastructure if they hope to have any chance of reasonably matching the Silverado EV's charging and long trip capabilities. So again, at this point, it's more about these trucks exposing weaknesses in the charging infrastructure.

Seeing the cyber truck having to jump stalls to get full power and always wrap the charging handles to keep full power is just ridiculous when all Out of Spec and others say is how near perfect Tesla Superchargers are. I never have to wrap a CCS handle to get 268kW on a Taycan? Then leaving the door open to block a V2 charger or hanging the handle to flag as broken is so sleazy. What if all Tesla drivers acted like this? I understand it’s a race, but shouldn’t you act like a good person? This doesn’t make an example of etiquette 😔

Yeah I agree, I would have liked to see a race in good faith, not pulling little tricks like that. Let's see how the infrastructure would actually work in real-life. When you inconvenience others just to win a contest, its pretty selfish.

Asking people to move so you get a better charge it’s fine because you’re asking them, moving the charging so it looks like it may not work is a little sketchy morally, but leave it how you did after putting it like that was rude, Even with the apology, I don’t drive electric, If that’s what you’re going to do to win race, it doesn’t deserve a win if that’s how you’re gonna play the game.

I love Kyle's passion and enthusiasm. Without him this wouldn't have gotten done. With that said, his youthful impatience cost his team. They should have stayed at just about every stop until the Cybertruck dropped, at minimum, below180kw or so. The time lost getting off and back on when added all together is a lot longer than if they had stayed to said deeper charging points. Unless I'm mistaken, did they not unplug on one stop as soon as it went below 240kw? In fact, that would make for a FANTASTIC VIDEO: Two Cybertrucks racing one another: -- One with TEAM KYLE and his youthful impatience (or in his eyes: optimized charging). --And the other with TEAM DAVE and his laid-back wisdom with deeper charges (and of course, his restaurant tour). Quick, someone bring that up to Kyle.

I think it didn't matter until the last stretch, yeah they should have stayed a bit longer, then it would have been a different story, it's crazy that they were basically tied until the end with a 5 minute lead difference

The people who use a rag to keep the handle cold are the same people who complain about delisted chargers
@junehanzawa51657 ай бұрын
The cold rag actually helps protect the handle as it doesn't have any cooling like the cable. They should have been using ice on the rag to really help it.
@thelegendaryfk79227 ай бұрын
@@junehanzawa5165 it just tricks the sensor, which is there for safety reasons
@junehanzawa51657 ай бұрын
@thelegendaryfk7922 The sensor is watching for overheating. If you keep the handle cooled, the sensor knows the handle is not in danger. Therefore, you're helping the handle stay cooled, which is best for longevity. Has nothing to do with tricking any sensor. Anyone who says that, including any of these drivers, doesn't understand how it works.
@mysteryboyee6 ай бұрын
@@junehanzawa5165 the only one who doesn't understand how it works is you and everyone who does this, as you said, the handle has no cooling, the rag is only cooling the outside of the handle, the inside is still getting stupid hot (you know, the part where all the actually important stuff is), only now the sensor doesn't know this is happening, and just lets the charger overheat and kill itself because it thinks it's fine when it is in fact very much not in any way shape or form. i hope tesla sends people like you the repair bill for these things
@junehanzawa51656 ай бұрын
@mysteryboyee This doesn't even deserve a reply because you're clearly one of those incapable of understanding why we don't fall off from the bottom of a round planet. But here goes for those that do. The Tesla V3 handles have 2 sensors. One for the exterior to prevent it from getting too hot to handle (a lesson learned from V1's) and a second for the interior metal pins. If you only cooled the exterior, the interior sensor would still cut down the amperage (which causes the heat) if the interior of the handle gets too hot. So when you use an exterior cooling source that doesn't cool the interior, the interior sensor will still bring down the power. The only way the interior sensor won't bring the power down is ONLY if an exterior source is keeping BOTH the exterior AND the INTERIOR cooled below each of their heat thresholds. There is NO TRICKING THE SENSORS. The sensors don't have a heat sensor for themselves. They only measure the INTERIOR and exterior temperatures of the handle. If the interior of the handle is not kept cooled below its threshold, the INTERIOR sensor will bring down the power. So yes, a wet (preferably cold) rag helps protect the handle for as long as it can keep it below a certain temperature. As soon as that wet rag effectiveness is gone, the sensors bring down the amps. That's why it only helps for a few minutes.

The Cooling rag on the cable, I can only imagine thats a sensor on the charger that is being hoodwinked at some level, have to wonder if this is abusing the condition of the battery by giving it more charge than it actually wants at the temp is it as, compared to the temp it believes its at with the rag artificially cooling it.
@BillyONeal7 ай бұрын
That seems unlikely; the battery is a long way from where they were cooling things down with the rag. The cars have bunches of temp sensors in the battery packs themselves and are more than capable of asking the charger to slow down if things aren't going well.

I'm pretty sure the temperature sensor is for the cable itself to prevent overheating of the connector.
