Megaman Legends is scary for a pretty big lore reason: Don't let the bright colors of the game confuse you- It's a post-apocalyptic hellscape. ALL humans are dead. What is left are all reploids in some form. Not a single "true" human remains.

In a way this game is NIER AUTOMATA, as androids became new rulers of earth as memento of humans, and tried to build similiar civilisation. Also here the system that was suppose to supervise the whole process went crazy after achieving "semi-sentience"

@@TaigaXsenpai Sort of like Nier Automata, yet it's worth noting that both Legends games give hints at the humans using the "Carbons" for planetary management such as tending fields, keeping the planet clean of pollution and the such, all while humans indulged in a hedonistic lifestyle at Eden and Elysium until "something" went catastrophically wrong, leading to all pure blooded humans going extinct and leaving the Master as the last remaining human.

@@gnosis_gamingok for real you are definitively right about something being unsettling under the surface of this game (literally and figuratively) because of the post apocalypse and Juno and what happened to all the humans. The creepiest part about it is people are all artificial or something its been awhile since I played. Maybe the servbots remind you of that the people were all fake and created. And they're on a giant weapon? And because of this video I realized Juno was only the beurocratic model so wtf is a combat model like?!

What's funny is that the liminal thing is most a zoomer term. If you look at the games it comes from, it's all stuff that millennials were (as kids) floored by for their strong sense of place. By modern standards, they kinda feel like places constructed based on concepts instead of functionality. And no people. That's important. But this is all due to polycount. And for Legends in particular, the ruins *were* designed by humans and then abandoned.

@turnkey_hole I tend to think this way as well. I think Zoomers, having been raised in a constantly social and online world, feel something unnatural and spooky when no one is around. Similarly, having been mostly developed by the time I experienced the internet and fully grown by the time social media took over, I find the overcrowded worlds of MMORPG to be stressful and nauseating. I think this might be why Breath of the Wild is the only game of the last decade or so that's breached my top 10. Everything seems overpopulated and suffocating in the industry these days. Zoomer and Gen Alpha taste I think. At least the large majority of them purchasing games anyway.

I really love this game when I was a kid. This game was one of the first PS1 games I've played. This game didn't scare me because I had a lot of fun exploring the town, busy trying to kick a soda can and the scariness went over my head, I guess. There were a few games that scared me when I was a kid. First was FF7's Emerald Weapon and Gi Ghost boss in Cosmo Canyon where he will make a scary face before the fight. For Emerald Weapon, how it roam around the deep sea and the emptiness, OOF. Second and third game were Clock Tower 1 and 2. And lastly, I don't remember the name but I can describe it, I really can't forget this game. It's a Japanese game where a boy and his grandfather crashed their plane in a mysterious island. You play as a boy and his weapon is a red toy hammer, I think. And one of the first bosses you'll have to fight is a giant red centipede. This game scared the sh* t out of me. When you think about it, Mega Man Legends is set in the most peaceful era of the main Mega Man timeline. The Classic Series was a bit tame, the original Mega Man trying to stop a mad robotics scientist from dominating the world. The X series got more dark with Earth and humanity tormented by so many wars between Reploids, one side are basically Reploid supremacists, and the other Reploids like X and Zero trying to keep Earth and the human race in one piece, but nearly failed, especially after Mega Man X5. The Zero series got a LOT DARKER, taking place 100 years after the most apocalyptic war the world has ever witnessed that happened a couple decades after Mega Man X8. The ZX series got a bit less dark than than the Zero series, to show that the world is healing after Mega Man Zero 4. And Mega Man Legends 1 and 2, which are more than a thousand years after Mega Man ZX and ZX Advent, are set in the most peaceful era. No wars, no conflicts, the only on the surface threats being pirates like the Bonnes. But under the surface there are these mysterious ruins that give you a sense of dread, and there is a cruel and callous system run by ancient machines that regulates the population of the artificial humans as if they are animals to be "euthanized". If a certain location gets over-populated, they'll be wiped out.

Man, what a great video to watch. It really encapsulates the way I felt playing the game as a kid, but I was never quite aware of its deep creepy factor, because playing MML really felt like a big adventure to me... The most memorable scares were from those weird horse bots at the common dungeons, the water dungeon bots that chased you, the water dungeon boss, and that weird centipede boss at the end of the game. Also, MML2 was pretty much like the first game, but on steroids, everything was better, has some really memorable dreamlike sequences, and is even more moody and atmospheric than the first game. That giant boss from the third ruin (the fire one) was the most scary part of the legends series, and also pretty impressive how a huge 3d model like that can fit on a ps1 game, props to all developers who made that happen. Rented both games a lot back in the day, until got my own copy of them, definitely on the list of my favorite games ever.

The music (or frequently lack thereof) while I was submerged in any of any of those mechanical subterranean hellscapes felt like tension had taken on a life of its own and decided provide me with some highly unwelcome company while I was playing. Legends is one of my favorite games of all time ever since I played it as a kid back in the day. One of the main reasons for it was the unmatched _vibes_ of the dungeons, especially the subgates that eventually connect with each other. This game truly is something special - it's such a shame that it wasn't really given a fair shot at the time it came out. I'm not quite sure I'd like a remake or remaster of it though - I'm positive those _vibes_ would be really compromised if a new version of the game came out; modern devs of big budget studios simply don't seem to comprehend the power of aesthetics anymore, so everything gets a lot more "sanitized", if that makes sense. For me, DuckStation with the correct configuration is more than enough to enjoy this game in all its glory in modern hardware.

Forget a remaster. The trilogy needs a full modern remake with a bigger world to explore in each game, more quests, items, weapons, an expanded story and current gen graphics, modern controls and quality of life features (like swapping special weapons instantly, instead of having to go back to roll every time just to swap, and saving the game anywhere) but keep the original voice actors from legends 1. Seriously, how can a character in a sequel, that canonically takes place a year or 2 after the first game, sound like he 5 years younger? Lol. Still some of my favorite games of all time. Along with Brave Fencer Musashi. Which needs the same kind of remake treatment.

I only played Legends 2 but it has the exact same feeling and it's why it became one of my top jrpgs ever. Especially the starting snowy area and mines have very intense bgms. All the ruins have the same sense of dread but the flooded ones with the reaverbot sharks swimming in the dark corners were the best. The story is quite somber too.

Great to see I wasn't alone, I think the lack of actual music in the dungeons is what helps the atmosphere to stay creepy, coupled with the PS1 pitiful draw distance.

There is something disconcerting about the lack of music, underground, but it didn't take me too long to start cracking jokes about Roll turning on the radio when I replayed the N64 version recently. The Servbots, though, are just straight up adorable.

I am not sure why but i have never gotten this feeling through most of the game, I always felt that it was somewhat goofy with the bons always lightening things up and then you get to go through the dungeons where you get more loot. I think the only part of this game that truly ever scared me was when I was a kid and I was just going through the minor ruins when I went into that room with the hanmuru doll, it just jumpscared me which absolutely freaked little kid me out.

I was extremely afraid of the invisible reaverbots as a kid, to the point that I refused to go on the floor in that area. I'd use the jet skates and try my absolute best to stay on the platforms. I'm not sure I ever actually fought them in my first playthrough. The slow footsteps suddenly speeding up as they charge at you, I was terrified of them.

It's scary since the beginning till the end for me. 01. World "full" of water 02. Small dark dungeons 03. Small communities everywhere 04. A lot of "ancient findings or archaeology", too mysterious for me 05. People have to rely on and find crystals as energy source 06. People merged with cheap lookng / unpolished machine 07. The land is beautiful, but feels empty 08. I hate reaverbots red eye

MML does NOT need a remaster. The graphics and art style are sublime for emulating the artistic style of anime from the 80s and 90s and blending them together in a pixel style that works perfectly with the world. You start changing that visual identity, making things look higher res, less pixelated, cleaner, smoother, you may not realize it but you'll be wiping away a lot of the heart and soul of this game.

@@gnosis_gaming. Agreed but I do genuinely think that MML's spirit lies partially and prominently in the pixely, anime style we see. I am not sure if even a remaster like the recent Tomb Raider games would be good. Where everything is kept as is and totally untouched with just the visuals being changed. The only way I could see it being improved is maybe if they leaned heavy on pixel art style. Blend together a cell shaded look with pixel art. High Definition pixel based textures in order to preserve the look of playing an anime from the 80s to 90s era. EDIT: And definitely avoid trying to remake areas to have state of the art lighting effects like the Spyro reignited trilogy

Maybe it's because I played RE1 and used to be scared of the Undertaker, but MML was never a really eerie game to me. It's only when you go down to the underground city that it gets a little creepy, but I was honestly just trying to grind money for the 999999Z upgrades... so it was more tedious than creepy. I remember getting caught unaware by enemies around corners being a thing. That's about it. 5:46 The real horror of Megaman Legends is realizing that you'll be playing with the drill arm for 80% of it.

Oh for sure. The mentioned invisible reaverbots got me as a kid but the one that stuck with me was the three dog like bosses in the third sub-gate (forget their names but the one you have to use the Flutter to get to). They always reminded young me of what I'd seen of the xenomorphs from Alien/s. I literally refused to play the game for several days after they beat me once (or should I say chased me down as I screamed at the top of my lungs?) and I only revisit and beat them while my mom was in the room. Similarly but on a far less terrifying level were the Sub-City Gates, the mix of the starry night sky (but underground) mixed with this strange music always gave me ethereal, fantastical vibes I could never quite put my finger on but always felt otherworldly to me. Even the silent regular ruins tend to feel like they exist in a very different place and that you're truly alone down there in a separate world from the people above ground. Can't say the servbots ever got to me but early 3D gets to everyone differently. Still, overall I get it. Megaman Legends is like 20% harmless fun, 20% action, 20% fantastical and 40% creepy. If we ever get a remake or god willing see a third game I hope this aspect isn't glossed over as it's what made it stand out.

The new 3D format of Mario, Zelda, and Megaman was accompanied by stronger atmospheric touches (ambient birds, ambient tunnels). These are achievable in 2D (Super Metroid), but perhaps 3D’s promise of greater spatial presence of game environs inspired other creators, and we got stuff like Mario 64’s haunted house, Ocarina of Time’s ReDead hangouts, and the low-pitched groaning of MML’s subterranean spaces.
