Maybe if Capcom hadn’t been so tight lipped about Inafune’s hand in Capcom’s problems during the late 00’s, perhaps Mighty Number 9 might not have had such a massive successful funding period leading to the cursed development period. The worst thing about the "So few fans took part" tweet and the whole reasoning behind it to me is that Capcom released a Devroom trailer where it stated, and I quote, "Of course, it's okay to hang back and just watch, too!". If you're that dependent on engagement to keep the project going, maybe don't tell people in a trailer that they don't need to engage with it..?
@Nilakanthanataraja2 жыл бұрын
Pretty much this. I remember when we would try to engage and our post would get ignore, so people pretty much said, "well, we'll just wait and see what they are developing before we can comment on anything". Geeze if I had known that "Watching patiently in the back for progress on the game" was actively detrimental to the success of the game, I would have been more active on it. Oh god I forgot I drew that icon for Gregaman forever ago. Its ancient history, but I did it because the official artists wouldn't make one for him like they were for the Japanese branch of the site at the time. I felt honored he used it because I wasn't very good at drawing at the time. Now my terrible art is plastered all over Matt's video too lol. Megaman Legends was always a huge part of my life, and one of my favorite games. I was so excited fans could be involved in things. Unfortunately If you want a little truth from someone that was apart of that community. A large reason why drop off from fans was so sharp was that input from the western side of the community wasn't ever considered like it was on the Japanese specific community. We were never really a part of the project like they were, and people quickly became disappointed and started leaving in droves. In the end most of the western community had given up on having any amount of input or effect on the project and would just pop in now and then to see if any news was updated.

Yeah, I remember that too. Probably not worth reuploading the video for, but that was the major reason why people were leaving, because the vote for the girl (Aero) was weighed much more heavily on the Japanese side and the Western choice was passed over. I think that Capcom was also afraid because they had accidentally exposed parts of their development like that example that they didn't want to be judged over. As positive as Gregaman's statement tries to be, I think what Capcom took away from that, and other lessons over the years, is to double down on their conservative approach and only test one or two new things a decade, and then keep making them a few more times to milk that idea as hard as it can (see resident evil 7/8/9 trilogy) and then dumping it in the trash for the next thing. All they want is blockbuster cash cows and there's no room for anything else.

I didnt even know it was a thing at all. Capcom did a seriously shit job at promoting something that was apparently so integral to the success of the entire damn project. There were likely tens of thousands like me who werent diehard Legends fans but were interested in the project since it looked interesting that wouldve taken part in the Devroom forum if they even knew it existed. Thousands more who wouldve downloaded the Prototype. Knowing that the 3DS was eventually a success makes the cancellation even dumber in hindsight. They were so worried about the platform it was on failing and trying to predict everything via financial forecasts that they missed out on a potential succesful revivial of a franchise.

Hoo-boy, so much to say about this debacle…but really I can sum it up as “I agree with Matt’s feelings about this entire subject”, from the bad start, terrible finish, and just the absolute frustration with current Capcom keeping their focus so narrow and only using old franchises as asset bait for the 2-4 titles they focus on. Great video Matt! 2010-2011 was a brutal time for megaman fans and this is the most tragic loss for many fans of megaman legends who waited so long to see a continuation of the series and was given hope to finally get megaman off the moon. However, that "hope" was a false one after so severe trouble behind the scenes that grew into despair after the cancellation of legends 3 and the tragic fallout afterwards. It's 2022 with capcom gaining traction with some of their franchises but megaman however, despite the release of 11, is still in the dark ages to this day and poor megaman is still trapped on the moon. This is one gut punch no one wanted and still hurts to this day. 😔

I was part of that dev room, even submitted art for a boss design contest for it. Even at the time, it was apparent to me that the whole thing was a hail mary, a desperate attempt by inafune to circumvent the usual process of getting a project greenlit by involving fans directly. This could be gleamed much by Inafune's own words and sentiments publicly available at the time. But like this video states, even if we assumed it, we were never outright told exactly how much weight the dev room held to the greenlighting of the game and we all were basically assured the prototype demo is what its development would hinge on, and we never even got to download it. The cancellation hurt because the active members of that dev room were the audience for Megaman and it just felt like watching our favorite franchise get shot dead in front of us after doing everything we were told to do to keep it alive. It hurt.

Almost over 10 whole years past since the cancellation of MML3 Project and still pains me to this very day. Legends 3 was one of the sole reasons i even got the og 2011 3DS in the first place. At this point, if Capcom ever decides to grow a pair, maybe they should remake Legends 1 & 2 + the Tron Bonne game, to see if there is any potential to finally continue the Legends subseries, then maybe we could after that see a rebooted Legends 3 project once more in development.

On the topic of episode suggestions, I want to vouch for a potential episode on the first *Metal Slug* The game shipped as a bonafied classic, but behind the scenes the development was a mess: from the fact that the team had recently disbanded from Irem, to the elusive prototype that was met with a cold reception and led to major gameplay changes. This cancellation still hurts so much, even after all these years. The pain will never go away. Something I never understood is why they didn't just release the prototype, at the very least. Pretty sure that thing was complete or at least very, VERY close to being complete and playable. I feel like they would have lost way less money releasing a nearly completed prototype than they did by not releasing it. They surely suffered a major loss by developing so much of something that ultimately never saw release.
@SeiferA20012 жыл бұрын
Christ, this game's cancelation is the one that hit me the hardest; Primarily because we were SO DAMN CLOSE to having that Prototype Demo. Even if it was canceled, at LEAST being able to play something that was teased at with footage of it online would have made the cancelation just a tad bit less cut throat. If this prototype ever somehow leaks online, I think this would be the greatest thing to ever happen to the Legends fan base and we'd likely accept the death of this series a lot more.

Oddly enough, I recall that before the Devroom happened, there was already a community for Megaman Legends 3 and we were getting concept art and discussions going on then back in 2008. I was in that original group and contributed to polls and even recall having a really low servbot number, somewhere in the 300s. Wish I still had my servbot badge from then. I also remember discussing with some members about Volnutt's armor changes and Aero was nothing more than a rough sketch at the time. The reason I recall this very well was because my dad passed away 2 years prior and this was the best coping mechanism I had before moving addresses in late 2008. It's odd though that the discussions of years prior didn't show up in the Devroom which, I would have assumed, was archived in it somewhere. Either way, this brought back a lot of memories and literally me sitting in front of the PC 6 hours each day to monitor and new posts and discussions about ML3's development. Depression sure has an odd way of pushing you to do things you wouldn't normally be able to do sometimes.

As you said, it was a lead in to the developer/fan communication found on many crownfunding options today. However, without new footage to feed the machine, hype grew only to die for many of us as less and less relevant news released in the blogs. When the project finally died, a number of Servbots saw some of the writing on the wall. The prototype announcement helped some, but as you've said, it was all for naught in the end anyways. It's a sad trip down memory lane. I can only hope Capcom can find a way to re-introduce Legends in the future. It will likely be within a very "cost-effective" package, but at least to give it a chance.
