It's not what they're made of, it's what they do. The hardhat has a tachyon collider phase-shift sequence inverter that allows the met to phase through our universe. When Megaman's singularity bursts right through space-time (i.e. this universe), it fails to harm the met, because for that brief picosecond, he's in a completely different universe (where there is no trace of the singularity). You could throw him into a black hole and he'd just phase right through it. The only way to kill him is to have a device that can perfectly mimic his phase shift sequence inversion pattern.
