Put it in a safe deposit box and then contact the lottery agency after you call a lawyer and find an accountant and not a cheap one. Just an honest one. The top federal tax bracket is 37%. So, for Illinois the tax for both federal and state will be 42%. That means the winner will get 58% after taxes. The jackpot is $1.28 Billion. If the winner elects to take the lump sum cash option they will get $747.2 Million. 58% of that after taxes is $433,376,000 the winner will clear. This is of course if the winner doesn't make any kind of investments within the first year to help shelter some of the tax burden. You give up $532,800,000 right off the top by taking the lump sum cash option. Then you'll have 37% in federal tax which is $276,464,000 on the $747,200,000 lump sum, plus 5% state tax which is $37,360,000. When it is all said and done you give up $313,824,000 in federal and state taxes, plus $532,800,000 in lottery winnings by taking the lump sum cash option, for a total of $846,624,000. You net $433,376,000 out of the $1.28 Billion. You give up almost 3 times the amount of the total $1.28 Billion by taking the lump sum cash option and after paying the federal and state income tax. You basically end up with only 1/3rd of the total prize amount.
