I'm running a e*thirteen TRS Plus 9-46 11-speed cassette with a GRX rear mech and 36t Wolftooth drop stop ring. This gives me 511% range without needing the road link. I did need to install an XD driver on my hub ($100) and the cassette costs more than the Sunrace (~$200), but is is also lighter (339g) than almost all of the other wide range cassettes on the market. I recommend getting the latest Gen2 version of the cassette (FW2TPA-101). I have been using it a little over a month now and love it. Shifting is solid and the range is amazing.
@bikehiker12394 жыл бұрын
ohiomoto what shifters are you using this setup with?
@ohiomoto4 жыл бұрын
@@bikehiker1239 Shimano Road shifters. You can use Shimano road derailers and a Wolf Tooth Road link if you want. We ran that setup with 11-46 XT cassettes on our bikes before I switched to the GRX derailleurs. You have more options with SRAM because you can use MTB derailleurs with their road shifters. You just need the XD driver, the e13 9-46 and whatever front ring you want. So you get your wide range mullet, but the costs can add up depending on what you already have to work with. Keep in mind. Front rings can be limited if you are using road cranks. My 5 arm Shimano cranks will take a ring as small as 34t while my wife's 4 arm Ultegra cranks only go down to a 38t. (Though I was able to make a 36t work with some mods. #abadideaontopofabadidea)

I mean. Sure. I'm pretty happy running 8spd (or 9spd, if you're feeling frisky) in a 11-32, with a 32/44 double up front. I could swap the cassette out to 11-34 or 11-36 if I needed more low end, I suppose. I guess I'm just not sold on 1x on a road/gravel/all road bike. On my MTB, absolutely- I've been running 1x there since 1999. But I'm a lot more sensitive to cadence on drop bar bikes, so I'll happily run a front derailleur. My $0.02.

None of this is particularly groundbreaking really, as Russ said- it should just work! My mate wanted an 11-36 with compact crank up front on his venerable SRAM Rival 2*10 setup for our upcoming Taiwan trip, so I told him to buy a 10 speed XO medium cage derailleur which were going cheap as nobody wants 10 speed anymore. Works great. It'll work with SRAM 2*11 too. I also have a compact 34-50 up front, with old 10 speed Tiagra brifters and a 9 speed Alivio shadow derailleur rated for 36t (Shimano MTB stuff up to 9 speed is compatible with road stuff up to 10 speed) and I'm running an 11-42 with no issues whatsoever. It's just a case of knowing which bits should work together and trying it.

I've been watching (and subbed) your channel for a year, and I've been thinking to built budget mullet since. My bike came with 105 brifters, 105 RD, and 11-32T cassette on road hub, 44T road crank (1x). I bought Shimano CS-5100 11-51T cassette, Shimano RD-5100 MTB, and a Wolftooth Tanpan. The cassette and RD is cheap because they're outdated (and because they weights a lot). Need a spacer for installing that cassette into road hub, and longer chain. The results : Noticeable reduction on shifting performance when moving to the largest or smallest rear cog. Since I almost never use 11T, I adjusted the shifting to smooth out towards bigger cogs. So I think it's enough for me 😅

Recently put 1x11 on a monster cross bike, that was 9 speed triple for a decade. Used Sunrace 11-46, Microsoft XCD and Microsoft Bar End shifter. Works pretty good. Losing the front derailleur hardware saved a lot of weight and the bike looks better. Pleased with the way it works, so far. Used a 42t chainring. The trickiest aspect is getting the chainline optimized. I see that a hot set-up is using the left bar-con for a seat dropper control, but I don't want that right now. I think all the parts were less than $200, including a chainring and chain, cable and housing.

Keep the Wolf Tooth in your pocket. I've done similar with shimano parts and cheap 11-40 on an old triple. All worked well until the 40t. Put on the Wolf Tooth. NO PROBLEMS. All shifts well and with the triple (28-38-48) I get some awesome gearings. Nice job! Just take your Wolf Tooth with you as your new chains stretch, you might have a problem. I wonder if the weight difference between a triple with 3 rings up front + front derailleur + extra shifter is a wash with the system you are using with a single up front, no front derailleur, no front shifter, but the massive weght of the 11-50 cassette you are using. Maybe time for a vid showing those systems side by side ( or even a double up front if you can't find a triple). Would be interesting to see the weight differences. Love my triples. Have them on 3 bikes with 11-40 out back. Thanks for the great vids. Keep the supple side down!

I can climb 15% gradients continuously but anything higher I can only go for short spurts especially fully loaded. Considering switching to a mountain crankset for steeper mountainous terrain. Could run a 28T then which would yield a easier climbing gear than going to a 50T in back. One more thing the 9T works flawlessly and the jumps between cogs is fine no real dead spots. Any comments?

I ended up running a 34t Wolftooth chainring up front and have been thrilled with the overall range (though I almost always have a dog in tow, so lots of slow unless a squirrel she sees!). Nice even steps throughout the cassette on 11-42 without any huge jumps in cadence, which the larger 11spd 46t and 50t tend to rely on (really need 12spd to avoid gaps here). I rarely go over 25mph so the top end is not an issue for me. My trusty old square taper crank remains stylish and as versatile as ever. There are other ways to do it, you can use a Shimano 11 speed mountain bike rear derraileur (SLX, XT or XTR) with a sunrace 11-50 cassete and a Wolftooth tanpan to make the MTB rd work with road shifters. You can use a Shimano XT or XTR Di2 rear derraileur with the same Sunrace 11-50 and Ultegra or Dura Ace Di2 Shifters. You can use a Shimano GRX 600 or 800 1x drivetrain with the Sunrace 11-50 too. All of these solutions work with a standard HG freehub. And you can also use a Gevenalle shifter for Shimano 12 speed MTB drivetrains such as XTR 9100, XT 8100 and SLX 7100 but that will require a microspline freehub.

I'm still running a triple, 44-34-22 Shimano in front and a cobbed together 14-40 in the rear, using a long cage Shimano LX and 26 inch wheels. I'd like to go to a 42 expander sprocket in the rear, but that will come in time. Why such a low system? I tow a camping trailer up serious hills. The two criteria that are important are 1) Can I still balance when climbing in the lowest gear (14 gear inches), and 2) Why have anything taller than 70 gear inches when you don't really want to go fast anyway? I now regard downhills as a cruel joke to shorten your recovery time after that last killer hill. If your gear combo is a pidgeon, consider mine to be a mutt. Not sure what the bird equivalent of a mutt would be. Sparrow?

Hi @pathlesspedaledTV, any suggestions for my Rival xplr 1X gravel drivetrain? Currently run the 10-44 cassette hoping for a cheap mullet build (atleast a 10-46)

one reason ive yet to jump into a new road bike is because i dont like most gearing. I dont know all the ins and outs no matter how many videos i watch..I just know that I want a rear cassette like that. WHen i want EASY pedaling, I want EASY PEDALING..

The proof is in the pudding: shifting back to back to back up/down from the largest cog to the next largest cog ... get that straight, then check the same in the small two cogs as well. The key is being able to quick shift between them in both directions repeatedly. If you have to baby it in either direction, no way it stands up to a road test.

FWIW have ridden it on the road since making the video and it works. I don't fully recommend and endorse it (hence the disclaimers in the beginning and end) and am looking for a better alternative, but it does in the technical sense work.

@@PathLessPedaledTV My plan is to wait until the AXS components come down in price ... already have the XD Driver and very light weight 10-42 installed (picked up used for $100). I've also got a 9-46T which pairs nicely with the 36T CR to keep the top speed up on flats & downhill, but I still think the 9T cog is a bit much. 10-50 would be nice, but those Eagle prices are hard to swallow and the 12 vs. 11 make the proposition undoable for brifters unless you go AXS ... and thus I wait ...

Hey, I'm considering buying my first drop bar bike. I'm looking at a sub-10kg (20lbs) cyclocross bike that I'd like to convert to be more supple for bikepacking and gravel. What do you think? Is it a good option?

Yeah. Sounds great!

I'm running Campagnolo 10s triple. It works great and is really durable,but I'd like some lower gears. Is anyone on here running Campagnolo drive train with a Shimano cassette? My other alternative is to run a smaller chairing in the triple, maybe a 28t instead of the current 30t.

I have a budget mullet but it's 9 speed. Sora shifters with alivio rear derailleur, 11-40t cassette

I have something similar- Tiagra 10 speed, compact double up front, Alivio derailleur, 11-42. Great minds think alike ;-)
@ABFPV5845 жыл бұрын
@@yonseimatt that's right! You can do a lot more on your own than big companies would like it seems. I'm 1x right now but I still have the option to run a mtb crankset for crazy low gearing

Hi Russ, I’ve been running that same Sunrace 11-50 cassette, with an Absolute Black 36T Oval, on my 2020 Cutthroat Apex 1 for the last 250 miles or so. I put it on about four days after I got the bike and found that the only thing I had to do was adjust the B-screw. In my case the stock chain was already long enough, although just barely. I’ll probably shift to the KMC 11x chain after I wear through the original one and see if the extra four links it comes with make it even better, or worse.

What rear mech are you using?
@kenexum30075 жыл бұрын
Path Less Pedaled I’m just using the stock SRAM Apex 1 that came on the bike. Stock Apex brifters, too.

Hi I have a grx810 derailleur and I would like to convert my 2x to 1x. I would like to put 40t chainring and 11-46t cassette, do you think my derailleur work? Thanks

Was thinking of pairing a Deore 592 with a 5700 Shimano 105 STI. 10 speeds

How is the clamp tool called that holds the cassette in place while unscrewing the lockring? I always found chain-whips pretty annoying. Also, what's the name of the bike repair stand?
@jbandt5 жыл бұрын
Keep us posted on how it performs. I'm running the 11-42 rival cassette with the 38t chainring and i wouldn't mind some lower gearing out back. 46 or 50 possibly.
@PathLessPedaledTV5 жыл бұрын
I can 100% recommend 46t. 50 with this rear derailleur is still iffy.

Hai PLP, greetings from Indonesia, I'm want to use ignite brifter 9 speed, with 11-40t sunrace sprocket, can this setup working smoothly?..😁 thank you

I run the Gevenalle Shifters and 12 speed. 11-50 so no change on the free hub. Works nice an you get the Sram Eagle GX for nice prices

Good to know. Using a Gevenalle and an Eagle GX was another alternative I explored but JUST bought the Rival shifter.

I am using that setup on my rando bike. rode a 1200km brevet on it, Paris-Brest-Paris. I love it !! runing a 42 up front an 11-50 in the back

@@PathLessPedaledTV XO, because... why not... no woolf tootch on this bike. that0s the beauty with Genevalles brifters, they are designed to work with MTB 12 10/11/12 speed shimano and 12 speed sram out of the box . it's a trek checkpoint SL5. the SL6 came out a few month after I finished my build, and has the wireless setup you mentioned from SRAM, (40 UP FRONT, 10-50 IN THE BACK) it's nice to see a manufactor going that route, and we hope for this tech to trickle down....

This is awesome. I've been having a really hard time sorting out which hubs/cassettes/derailleurs/shifters are compatible with each other for my next build. Does that cassette go on a standard HG body? -- and the cog spacing lines up with the Sram 11 speed road shifters? What's the specific part number? Thanks for making the video.

I was told with Sram it was after 10 speed where it went down, because on my Wolverine I had originally sram rival brifter and mid-cage RD w/28t rear & Rival compact double(got the parts of a cyclecross bike). Not an optimal setup uphill & with a help of google I was told the 10spd Sram GX RD works. My local co-op had a like new for really cheap, which now makes it 36t max RD on a 2x or 42t if I go 1x. My local REIs did not have a 10spd 116 link sram chain in stock & was on back order so I went to a LBS & got a Shimano 116 link 10spd chain. Works fine with no shifting issues. It's 11spd and up that's were compatibility issues show up. In my search I was told that using a longer b-screw I could 40t on a 2x & 46t on a 1x setup. Anyone know if I can run an 11-40t setup on a 2x10 GX setup(without roadlink)?

I think wolftooth sell longer b screws

Thinking wolf tooth would be the simple option when a time to get a new cassette or think about going 1x to get the 42t.

Not sure about the 2x10 gx, but I'm running a 2x10 sram apex brifters, 50/34 double up front with 11-40 Praxis Works cassette in the back with the sram rival medium cage on my Van Dessel Whiskey Tango Foxtrot with no problems.
