What was funny to us was that the crapy spare anchor from our 26' boat was miraculously able to stop the 67' catamaran! A few days after the ordeal we happened to run into some of our friends that we had met while anchored at Royal Island during the lightning storm, and they told us that they heard all about how the smallest boat in the anchorage saved the largest boat in the anchorage and were excited when they heard it was us. Haha We didn't know word would spread so quickly. We couldn't have done it without the help of the other cruisers who were willing to jump into action as well. Thank you so much for watching our video and for leaving us a great comment! We appreciate you being part of our sailing adventure!

This last Sunday/Monday was actually the first week that we missed and didn't post a video! How is it the boat owners fault? Even the marina thought is was impossible to break its mooring.
@SailingTurtle5 жыл бұрын
It was definitely unfortunate that the catamaran broke loose that night. With the high winds we had that night, it could have happened to anyone really, and it could have been a lot more serious. We heard that the boat owners were not even in The Bahamas at the time and that the boat's captain had recently left the island for a couple of days. There probably were precautions that could have been made to help prevent situations like this from happening, but they either didn't happen or got over looked. Hopefully the marinas in the area were able to learn from the experience and dive on their moorings just to double check that they are all in good shape. Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment! We really appreciate it!

I don't think anyone was expecting a situation like that to ever happen, especially in the middle of the night. It could have happened to anyone though. We are so glad that there were people willing to help out in this scary situation and are glad that we were in a position to where we could help as well. Whats better, to have the money to buy such a big boat, or to have the time to stay on a smaller?
@SailingTurtle6 жыл бұрын
Hahahaha is this a trick question? Seriously, it depends on if the small boat can take you everywhere you want to go and if you are comfortable sailing and living aboard the small boat. If the answer to either of those are no, then you may need a slightly larger boat. We would not have wanted to cross oceans on our 26' sailboat, but its small price did afford us an opportunity that we couldn't have made possible with the cost of a larger boat. While anchored in some of the most beautiful anchorages in The Bahamas, there would be huge mega yachts and big fancy sailboats anchored next to us. We wondered what it would be like to have the money, so that we could experience The Bahamas on one of those big fancy boats, but then quickly realized that we were already seeing and experiencing The Bahamas exactly the same way they were, and probably for less $$. It doesn't take loads of money or a big fancy yacht to get you to where you want to be, as long as you are willing to set goals and put forth the work necessary. Thanks so much for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us a comment! We appreciate it!

I envy you, to do all this things when you are young, I entered the sailing community when I was 42, bought a 30 ft boat and made an atlantic circle a few years later and as you say you can reach the same beautiful beaches with a smaller boat, and I made the experiance, it is much easyer to move a smaller boat around, I don`t avoid to anchor on two or three places a day. And the best, less stuff to repair! Thanks for showing us the beautiful bahamas!@@SailingTurtle

It was the most stressful month and a half, but all the hard work and effort that we put into getting over to Florida and then over to The Bahamas all paid off in the end. What's the name of that anchor safety app that texts your phone if your boat moves more than a distance you set after you've set your anchor and know what distance to set the alarm for? It works really well..I haven't used it but a KZbin sailing channel highlighted the app in a video. I don't like assuming anything or being negative thinker...but...I wonder what the cat owners would've done if your boat broke free and went towards their cat. Hopefully they'd have done the same as you did:) The marina insurance is going to have to cover any damage it sounds like..unless those are govt supplied moorings in which case it's likely going to be the cat insurance. Does it say anywhere "use these moorings at your own risk" or something like that?
@SailingTurtle4 жыл бұрын
That app sounds really cool. We did use the anchor watch setting on our chart plotter to wake us in the night if we drug at anchor. As for the cat breaking free from its mooring, we believe the mooring was privately owned and rented out by one of the marinas located in March Harbour. The marina employees were quite certain that their mooring had not broken, even after staring at half of the broken mooring dangling from the bow of the boat. They absolutely had no reason to put a boat of that size and windage on that size of a mooring. I mean that boat was easily double what I would have felt comfortable placing on that mooring. It was just plain stupid if you ask me, but I am constantly unimpressed with the ground tackle that people like using on their boats as well. You both did a great job saving the cat. Very nice video. How do you like Abaco so far. Safe Sailing
@SailingTurtle6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! At this point in our trip we were loving it! We were really excited to finally find coconuts and had a blast cooking some yummy meals with the coconut cream. The snorkeling in the Abacos was great everywhere we went. There are good anchorages, but we found ourselves needing to use a stern anchor more often than we did in the Exumas. The number one thing that we absolutely hated while in the Abacos were the no-see-ums! They were EVERYWHERE!!! We had to bust out the screen covers for the hatches for the first time and trying to go ashore was just a joke. Even before reaching the beach in the dinghy we had swarms of no-see-ums attacking us. We tried bug spray, which didn't do anything. We literally had thousands of the most unbearable itchy bug bites covering our entire bodies, which lasted for weeks on end! At one point we counted, Randall had over 300 bug bites on just one ankle! We were so glad that we took "After Bite Itch Eraser" with us. Although, the relief didn't last very long. Randall's mom worked at a Health Food store at the time and gave us a bottle of New Zealand Manuka Honey before we left on the trip. (Here's a LINK: amzn.to/2LHeJgV ) It helped a lot, but after applying it to the bites we couldn't move around much else we would get honey on everything we touched or sat on. Next time we go to the Abacos we will do more research on how to avoid the no-see-ums. Maybe they're seasonal? We hadn't really heard about them from other people before going.

Wow you two are good custodians of your fellow man. For your next boat consider a Danforth or Fortress as a secondary. Fortress anchors are super light so anyone can pull them up, and they are huge with lots of holding power. Get a Mantus as the main anchor! Are you two getting a new boat in the near future??
@SailingTurtle6 жыл бұрын
Yeah we would have loved an aluminum fortress as a secondary anchor, but it wasn't in the budget. We do have hopes of getting another boat someday, but nothing in the immediate plans as of right now. Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving us a great comment! We appreciate it!
@SailingSquib6 жыл бұрын
When the fortress is digged you need the same force to get it out as any other anchor, it doesn´t depend on the wight of the anchor but how deep it is in the ground and wich sort of ground. The Mantus is just a modification of the german Bügelanker, as same as the Rocna, the Original is much cheaper. If you want a real good anchor buy a Jambo

You need to fix the name of your video... a boat is up to 40 feet... a yacht is 40 to 80 feet... a super yacht is 80 to 200 feet a mega yacht is 200 to 400 feet and a giga yacht is 400 feet plus... what you dealt with, and good on you for helping, is a mid-range yacht and no where close to a super or mega yacht

The title of this video wasn't meant to be taken literal to the exact measurements and we didn't mean to offend anyone by it. We appreciate you sharing this bit of information for our viewers and hope that it can be beneficial to anyone reading through the comment section of this video. However, the 67' foot catamaran was by far the largest boat in the bay that night. It was privately owned, had a professional captain and would be anyone's dream boat to own if they had the money to do so. When comparing it to our small 26' sailboat, and for all of the rest of little guys out there trying to live the dream, it is a mega yacht. A very large boat equipped for cruising. Thanks again for watching!
@murraybarnes766 жыл бұрын
@@SailingTurtle yes... but it is not a mega yacht... your video title is totally misleading... just because you think it is big doesn't make it a mega yacht... the sole reason I clicked on your video was to see a mega yacht... I thought the small yacht in the photo was the one that got crashed into by the mega yacht... when I realised that there was no mega yacht, at all, I was very disappointed... we are hoping to build a super yacht between 90 and 120 feet and I believe the reason this video showed on my KZbin feed is the keyword mega yacht... which, again, is totally misleading... this is not how you build a KZbin Channel which is probably why you only have just over 3,000 subscribers after more than a year... again...
