the idea that you're gonna find cutting edge, unique, envelope-pushing games while refusing to look outside the mainstream is silly on its face. innovation these days happens on the fringes, with indie devs, small teams. Derrick literally just wants Ready Player One, a thing that would be actually a hellscape if it existed.
@caikq2 жыл бұрын
Yep, i always find their attitude of dismissing "weird"/"out of the box" titles really lame. They keep complaining about how the industry sucks and everything is the same but the moment something original appears they turn up the scrutiny to 11, at points even mocking people who enjoy these games (this happens specially with indies but it happens with AAAs as well like when they went berserk on R&C and SoT). It's even ironic when you stop and see what they represent in the industry and what type of companies are willing to work with them, oh well...
@Newman50232 жыл бұрын
Exactly
@Torgospizza9302 жыл бұрын
I think despite their criticisms of the games industry they can't help but end up wanting all the flash of AAA games. Like the idea of big games innovating is a very archaic idea that hasn't really been a thing for a long while and is something that you would only believe if you straight up just don't follow or play indie games.
@Newman50232 жыл бұрын
Feel like movies are same way... All the big budget movies seem to be remakes or unoriginal but that's the ones they push on us in advertising etc. Going a little deeper, i find so many original games, esp foreign stuff. I get what theyre saying to a degree, shining with an original idea is much harder but indie games are constantly surprising me with fresh ideas. And AAA games take so much time and cost so much that they have to push it on us or they'll lose money and so its easy to be over hyped or let down. That being said, I don't understand the annoyance of resident evil, esp after the 2 and 3 remakes were so good. Last of us, i cant defend. But like Garrett, im unfortunately gonna get it😆

Came here to post this but you put it better then I would’ve I just don’t think Derrick is that relevant when it comes to gaming, love the guy but he is a bit out of touch
@aster51912 жыл бұрын
What Derrick is asking for is an absolute shitload of extra time and resources on a developer's part for basically zero payoff. Say Rockstar really had made every single building in RDR2 accessible. Realistically, 95% of these buildings will have nothing of interest going on. You bust into all these random houses, find some old furniture and some cans of beans and then go back to your business. There's no chance of it being as mesmerizing as it sounds in his head.
@PhoenixSplash2 жыл бұрын
Shenmue did it lol in Shenmue 1 you can go into warehouses that have nothing in them and dig around your house to find clues in 2 you can enter every room of I think all of the buildings. Of course most people hate Shenmue with a passion, but that's what I've always liked about the shenmue series. Also you can have conversations with just about everyone.
@Joe90h2 жыл бұрын
@@PhoenixSplash I think the Yakuza games took that experience and did it better. You could barely enter any buildings on the map, and it was clear which characters actually had something to say, but there was no wasting of time. Well, besides all the time you waste on the myriad of minigames and sidequests those games have.

@Joe90h2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, a lot of the major new IPs from AAA studios were so full of microtransaction BS or were incomplete trend chasers expecing you to shell out for the DLC that gives you actual content the base game should have had or are buggy as hell or even all 3... I've just been having fun picking up the odd indy title that looks cool for a reasonable price, and waiting a year or so to buy the expensive 'risks'. I can't imagine being the person who got really excited for stuff like Anthem or Outriders pre-launch, or didn't see the smoke billowing out of the Cyberpunk marketing in the six months before it came out and knew to temper my hype.

Death Stranding as Garrett mentions is the one drop in the (AAA-specifically) ocean that tried to do something new, but even then that game garnered an enormous amount of controversy from retards who believed that Kojima was offering the Moon on a stick for YEARS when literally no gameplay footage had been shown. And then they all cried foul when the game didn't meet their literal non-existent expectations on release. Gamers are definitely part-and-parcel part of the problem because like most people nowadays, they don't truly KNOW what they want. I think personally the inherent problem of desire in this industry is that (ignoring that the industry is Live Service-aimed corporate fodder, now) publishers aren't trying anything new, which is why people like Derrick are clinging to old ideas like "I want to go everywhere", not realising (or outright forgetting) what that actually means. The market has stagnated for fucking years because once the 7th generation hit, everything HAD to be Hollywood. Bland, linear, cinematic-style games running at 30fps with no depth. The indie market is the only true facet of the industry where any good ideas are allowed to even exist or thrive. please do an FMV video game; if the Homestar Runner guys can work with a large company to publish a regular point and click game, you guys could do a game where the primary format is something you have over 10 years of experience in. FMV games are essentially point-and-click games with some timing and videos mixed in; you could probably bankroll the whole thing and build it with a few indie games contractors. Plus, with your creativity, you could seriously knock the comedy and production out of the park.

Derricks whole deal on remakes I can definitely understand. I feel in video games, like Rocco has said before, there are some titles I think could greatly benefit from getting a touch up for the modern day. I mainly think about games that are considered all time classics but are locked behind somewhat dated mechanics or visuals that many new people probably can't stomach. Games like RE2, 3, MGS1, Demons Souls and Shadow of the Colossus are great examples; each one was a classic but were locked behind dated tech or it wasn't easy to play them today. If done well I think remakes can do great to provide even nostalgic fans a new experience, but not everything needs that treatment.
@Joe90h2 жыл бұрын
If RE4 goes down the FF7R route and takes the extremely familiar and still very playable experience and flips it entirely on its head I'd be interested. That second part of the FF7 "remake" is going to be completely unrecognisable from the original, and I'm hoping Capcom were taking notes. Imagine if Ashley straight up gets killed early in the game, or Leon gets captured and Ada takes over as protagonist, and the story entirely changes and runs with the idea of it being non-canon. I'd be down for that 'remake'.

My guess is because the story is so 'in media res' and reliant on the canon within Resident Evil that they felt there was no real way to remake it confidently. Half of the story is the long-awaited continuation of the Wesker sub-plot born from Resi 1. Which ultimately ended badly in lieu of Resi 5. They made it a non-mainline entry for a reason, I suppose.
