+GodKingVivec Only $9 million according to Wikipedia :)
@bohemondiofantioch5397 жыл бұрын
+GodKingVivec Well yeah, I imagine that's how much it cost the U.S military to build them, the guys who already done all the R&D and have the facilities to build one while not needing to cut through all the legal red tape required for civilians to build their own tanks... but that's not really the point. My point is that these fights are always going to have to be at least a little dumb and impractical because giant robots are an inherently inferior design to tanks. You can't just have a competition to see who can build the best 50 or 60 tonne killing machine, because we already know what they look like, we have 100 years of engineering and military tradition, as well as real world combat with human lives on the line (something these events can never simulate) telling us what those look like, and they don't look like giant fighting robots. I thought this fight was awesome, and I am optimistic to see what these guys come out with next, but this isn't battle bots, it never will be, and we shouldn't try to change that. There is no point in trying to make this into a game that all the major military powers in the world have been playing better than us for a goddamned century. Imho this sport would be best to distance itself from battle bots and really try to be its own thing.

This was a cool experience but the outcomes were pretty obvious. First match: both robots independently built around the same weight class for their creators pleasure. Let’s call it medium weight class. America went for a ranged turret bot and Japan for a melee lancer bot. Melee won when it got the charge in especially since these are concept bots and the American bot was not actually created to use live ammunition. Makes sense. Second match: America custom built a bot specifically for defeating Japan’s bot that was double its weight class. That’s like a assault mech vs a medium mech in Battletech terms. Really it was obvious Japan was fighting at a huge disadvantage in that and makes sense for America to win. Also chain saw and cannons in a supposedly melee duel lol.

What's the point of making giant robots if whom ever is piloting it is a 100yds away.
@AkimboLizard7 жыл бұрын
You do realized that'd just be a factor of who shot first, right? Because the name of the game would be put on the biggest gun you can to disable it in one shot, to counter this you'd need heavier metal plating which would slow down but that weight would just support a bigger gun so you're basically just asking for tank combat but much slower. I don't see what's wrong with the current standard besides the need for weight classes. Paintballs are a versatile ammunition, they can be used to block sensors or damage armor but they're not powerful enough to be all you need, you need to consider melee tech for the robot too. But anyone who expected two Gundams to be running around the stadium, explosions everywhere, are complete idiots.

The chainsaw was BS but the first one was in the same weight class. They definitely should've set limitations for the second robot though, and probably used something less likely to kill the other pilot than the chainsaw. If that hit a little to the right it would've killed the other pilot, geez. They got a bit too into the competition, I think they've watched too many episodes of Gundam
@Chronoflation5 жыл бұрын
They both had gun, and the chainsaw setup was a claw and chainsaw. Technically that was the only one that went full melee. That said, they could've so easily killed someone with that thing, especially the other pilot. That was just plain not a fair move. Well, being double the weight is also kinda a separate weight class. They definitely needed better defined rules and safety precautions before doing this. Still, pretty cool gen 1 giant robot stuff. Give it 20 years and we might be touching on the tech that they're trying to emulate lol

@brandonsyverson69357 жыл бұрын
Pollen Applebee Something like this has to start somewhere since it's a new frontier... the technology and research isn't there yet which limits the robot's capabilities. Once they start real competitions then it will bring in more talented people and sponsors to fund it. To put it simply with an example, the space program didn't instantly arise out of nowhere. It took years of research and failures to make it to where it is today.
