UPDATE FROM ELDERS OF GATEWAY 3pm EST: SOUTHLAKE, Texas, June 18, 2024 - Today, June 18, the Board of Elders of Gateway Church accepted the resignation of Robert Morris, the senior pastor. In addition, the Board has retained the law firm of Haynes & Boone, LLP, to conduct an independent, thorough, and professional review of the report of past abuse to ensure we have a complete understanding of the events from 1982-1987. Regretfully, prior to Friday, June 14, the elders did not have all the facts of the inappropriate relationship between Morris and the victim, including her age at the time and the length of the abuse. The elders" prior undersianding was that Morris's extramarital relationship, which he had discussed many times throughout his ministry, was with "a young lady" and not abuse of a 12-year-old child. Even though it occurred many years before Gateway was established, as leaders of the church, we regret that we did not have the information that we now have. We are heartbroken and appalled by what has come to light over the past few days, and we express our deep sympathy to the victim and her family. For the sake of the victim, we are thankful this situation has been exposed. We know many have been affected by this, we understand that you are hurting, and we are very sorry. It is our prayer that, in time, healing for all those affected can occur.

You know there is something that is heavy on my heart, not over looking what has happened. In fact it’s just so much worse because I have personal experience in S.Abuse, and their is one thing about abuse with this type of behavior and age timing, Means if he didn’t do this again then it would be a miracle like no other. But what I’m trying to say is I think there is something wrong and different with this case, I think that he may very well take his life..He has been hit with the worst crime in the church and he knows that the church will fade a lot because having the confidence in him will hit them hard enough that they won’t be able to stay at the church.. And people will second guess themselves and wonder why they didn’t feel something is wrong and a lot of folks; this will destroy their faith and he knows it and I just feel he may very well un- alive himself.. 😢not for him, just the whole situation at Large.. 😔

That’s what always happens. This man should be in jail. Instead, injustice is done and the criminal pastor goes free while the victim is left in pieces. What really gets me is that I was in a church related to Gateway and this kind of thing was going on. Pastors were having affairs with their secretaries, worship leaders were having affairs, etc. But I was told I was in sin, had no faith, and was demonized because I had a chronic health issue. I was having an hour a day quiet time and asking God to reveal anything in me and I was told by someone who admitted he didn’t spend 5 minutes in prayer that I was in sin. This is spiritual abuse. I’m doing much better outside the church. My faith is in God, not men.

I am sick of hearing others dismiss the severity of his behavior saying he repented, had counseling etc etc and has had a fruitful ministry. Ugh! Someone who calls himself a pastor does not blame his criminal behavior on the 12 year old victim he defiled, nor does he cover over the details of that behavior to minimize it. Where is the brokenness for what he did to a 12 year old girl who was the daughter of a friend whose home he was invited into in order to help him move forward in ministry? The brazenness of this creep to do this under the roof of friends that believed in him and trusted him! As you said, if he was truly a man of God and repentant, he would jump at the chance to do anything to make restitution to this woman! And then wanting an NDA on top of it! Sickening ! The few times I watched this wolf on TV I never felt good about him and his message- too focused on money most of the time and just did not give me a good feeling. Those pastors involved in this cover up should be held to account as well! They are guilty for aiding and abetting this unrepentant predator ! I can’t believe how deluded people are in their comments supporting this guy. The Biblical references they use are so skewed. Lots of good insights. Thank you. If you had read further in the book, you would have learned that after a month of working nights as a security guard, Morris decided he had dealt with his pride sufficiently and rejoined the evangelist he had worked for before, so he lied about the two years out of ministry. Justin Peters interviewed a man who had worked with Morris, and he had a lot to say that throws even more light on the lack of authenticity of Morris’ repentance.
@oneknb7 ай бұрын
Further research disclosed that Robert Morris was out of ministry for only ONE MONTH before traveling in ministry with James Robison (though he wasn't at Shady Grove for two years). That was NOT sufficient discipline in light of what Scriptures dictate as standards for ministers -- besides the fact that molesting a 12-year-old CHILD is a crime. May righteousness, truth and JUSTICE be established within the Church of Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 5:9-13 -- "I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people- not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler-not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”

This is not meant as defense for the deplorable behavior of Morris/Bickle, but where in the world were the parents who did not protect their kids.
@keithbryner407 ай бұрын
Youth ministry in the 80's and 90's was disgusting! Just look at the sexualized games and objectification of young teens. The idea was that we were to "fish" for the "popular jocks and hotties" in order to bring more kids to "Jesus." When I came into youth ministry in the late '90's (in a dual position with Youth for Christ as a Campus Life Director/UMC Youth Director), I was a classically trained social worker. I was stunned. The question was not if but when clergy sexual abuse would happen. In fact, in training, I saw youth meetings that were breeding grounds for inappropriate behavior, not only for youth but youth leaders as well. I saw some things change, but the overall landscape was still very stetchy. Sorry, this is big soap box for me. Again, look where this started with both Bickle and Morris... youth ministry. The problem didn't start with them however, the youth ministry landscape invited this type of behavior. This is in no way leaves Bickle and Morris off the hook. The culture of youth ministry did however dump gasoline on their aready raging fire.

@reesecop7 ай бұрын
@GraceFilledDaisies That's quite a statement. There are plenty of healthy youth ministries. Sorry you never saw or participated in one. There's nothing "unbiblical" about reaching youth for Christ. It can be as simple as a solid married couple holding a Bible Study for teens/those about to enter college and being available to them for questions, guidance and prayer. Not every teen has Christian parents, so having adults willing to be there for young people in this way is invaluable.

It was the same with Mike Bickle. A small church wanted a pastor, heard him speak once, then asked him to be their pastor. Age: 20/21. I don't think they asked if he had a bible college or seminary degree. But he did have 3 months at a bible camp in Colorado. So he figured that was good enough. Bob Hartley became a youth pastor for Bickle only 3 years after he was saved. Why? Because Bob Jones the "prophet" said Hartley was ready. (This is all written up in Daniel Falls' book on Pat Bickle and the KC prophets.) Please keep kids out of leadership. Thank you.

The Lord said, " if anyone wants to sue you, and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. And whoever shall force you to go one mile, go with him two. " Matt5:40,41 And "If therefore you are presenting your offering at the alter, and there remember that your brother has something AGAINST YOU, leave your offering there before the altar, and go your way; FIRST BE RECONCILED TO YOUR BROTHER, and then come and present your offering." Matt 5:23,24. God is definitely for restitution, read Ex 21-22 these are the "you have heard it said" verses Jesus is talking about. And he raised the bar on restitution. I've done insurance remediation work, and the standard is to make your client whole, as if it never happened when it comes to property damage. It is unethical to do less, that's what the insurance is for. Now if that's the standard for the world, for Joe Shmo construction guy fixing your house, what should be the standard of a Shepherd of God's people? Nowhere in Jesus' ministry are you finding him splitting hairs on accountability. Nowhere is he minimizing people's pain and suffering. Nuff said.

Being molested as a child has such a complex destructive effect on the human psyche and heart, it's almost like a mental, emotional, and spiritual, shotgun effect. Some people end up needing decades of therapy, sometimes the damage done is irreparable, it's a violation that is so profound, it robs the child of their innocence, sense of personal safety, bring so much confusion, and also destroys healthy instinctive boundaries through the grooming process which systematically tears down normal and necessary defense mechanisms, and even defiles and corrupts the child, can even strip them of their God given sense of dignity 😔

Something I have to disagree with you on. Timothy and a Titus are not vague at all. They are written in a plain simple way. People want to believe that its vague because it sounds harsh when you read the definitions of the words used. I would suggest getting a good Greek, Hebrew computer program and study in the original languages. Something a lot of people need to understand is these "pastors" were not used by God. They were used by Satan to confuse the body of Christ. Honestly everybody that served under them needs to step down, and search themselves for what falsehoods they have accepted and passed on to others.

The error of hierarchy is the greatest threat to the body of Christ. This is what Jesus is trying to expose, the moral failures are just symptoms of the false church system .
@jenniferpackard65587 ай бұрын
Completely agree!!! This is the bad root. Also it's not just the ministry at fault but the people in the congregation that idolize the leader/pastor and don't think they should be subject to the same standards of morality. It is just unbelievable. Also, everyone I have heard on social media that is in ministry is beating the drum of "don't isolate" and "just find a good church". Which in my opinion shows they don't get it yet. How can we trust leadership when the system remains the same??
@BILLYJEAN1-o6m7 ай бұрын
@jenniferpackard6558 I know its frustrating when everybody is focussing on the sin & not the false church system that allows this dysfunction to thrive. I hear people say he shouldn't be restored to that position when I'm screaming the position was in error to begin with. The position, the title, the individual authority is all error. We are all equals with different functions yes, but equal in authority. Even elders that would oversee a group of beleivers didn't claim individual authority like these Celebrity Pastor's & other Ephesian 4 beleivers. Why is it so hard for the body of Christ to grasp this truth of equality. I know why because the traditions of men has nullified the word of God just as Paul warned. We should be making every effort to flee even the perception of hierarchy, yet we embrace it with our stages, VIP front row area ect.. Allowing one person called pastor to dominte every gathering while the rest of the body just sits their silent. Its all junk apon junk apon junk. Jesus said the Gentiles Lord it over one another with authority, but not so among you because you are all brothers & sisters. (Equals)

Sad. Also intereresting. I've watched you two for a while now but never knew you were at Shady Grove. My husband and oldest son were there from 1982-84. There was a Robert MOrris who was an elder there at the time, I think, thought Olin Griffing was pastor. I knew there was something I couldn't put my finger on but I later discoverd in what ways. I did know many wonderful people there. Our son went to their school while we lived there. After many, many years, we are now living where we grew up - the Kansas City area, watching the sad fallout from IHOP. I never attended there but know many who did. I did meet and tallk with MIke Bickle back during my Agape days not long after his brother was paralyed. Was also at Ernie Gruien's church but left for TX in 1981, before the famous sermon/tape. I also agree about Strang. U gaveb;t read Charisma in years. BTW, the Greek "husband of one wife" can be translated "one woman man."

But, the Consequences of his hidden, deceptive, and criminal sin must be dealt with in a court of law. He is accountable and responsible for his criminal actions on an innocent child. All this time while proclaiming to be a Christian and pastoring. Gifted or not this is a mockery. This may seem harsh, but I was molested as a child by my step dad and still deal with the trauma of the abuse. She needs justice!

There is a difference between talent/charisma that one is born with, and gifts of the Spirit that we are endowed with upon being born again. Apparently, it seems to me, that he was a naturally talented man (fleshly talented) at the time of the incident and not born again. if any man be born of the Spirit He ceases to sin (1 John 3:9). This incident was not a single accidental fall into sin; it was ongoing over several years. I must question whether he was, then, actually born again or even now born again. His lies and lack of integrity continue to this day. “That which is born of the flesh IS flesh. That which is born of the Spirit IS Spirit.” There is a difference between the acknowledgment of sin as in Saul (a type of antiChrist) and the repentance of David (“a man after God’s own heart” and forerunner of Christ) who confessed his sin when confronted and accepted his just discipline. When I was born again I went around confessing and trying to make amends for my past life of sin at the Lord’s direction. This is a sad day for Christendom. 37:26
