Cristina sounds really good, but I prefer the original. It's slower, more heavy, emotional and is probably Mustaines best vocal performance.

Dave wrote this song back in 1994 as a duel but could not find a female singer worthy in his eyes so he sang it as a solo. But years later (2007) found a great singer in Christina and rehashed this legendary song. Also correct, this is not a suicide song it's a departing song, Dave wrote this after his mom pasted away.

The original was the song chosen for my brothers casket lowering into the gravesite. This version for my mother's casket. For my father's eulogy, I opened with "moving on is a simple thing, what it leaves behind is hard. You know the sleeping feel no more pain, and the living all are scarred". I recited the submariner poem when transferring my father's ashes to the USNavy for his burial at sea, then sat at the little park outside the nautilus museum windows down system up with this on repeat for a while. It's been 23 years for my brother, 12 for mother, 7 for dad. This will be played at my funeral.

Yeah, Mustaine's voice hasn't aged the best. It's fine with newer songs, but when he goes back to his older works he doesn't have the same power we are accustomed to hearing on those tracks. In fairness, 40 years of thrash metal (and the boozing) can absolutely trash a voice, so I'm shocked it's still as good as it is. It's by no means "bad", it's just not what we remember. And I do hear a few interesting things in there that makes me think he's doubling down on vocal exercises and stepping outside of his comfort zone a bit and trying some new stuff, which I'm happy to hear. But Christina Scabbia does awesome work. She's amazing, I love her music. It's a bit odd for her to be singing a Megadeth song, it's such a contrast in styles, but she has the power and grit for it. It's a great choice for an accompanying artist. Another great choice would have been Dominique Persi (of Stolen Babies)... I think her voice would have matched this song perfectly. Bring in a female singer, make it more interesting and complex, but preserve more of the character of the original at the same time. Overall, I think this is an awesome version of the song, but when you've heard the original a thousand times, it takes a few listens to really recalibrate your ears to it and eschew any expectations set by the original, and instead appreciate it for what it is, which is something totally different. At first listen, it's not different enough to stand out from the original, but too different to trigger that nostalgia we have for the song. So my criticisms aren't even really against Mustaine as a singer, but myself as the listener trying to adjust to it. Given their whole catalogue, this isn't the track I would have picked to review for that reason alone. But I'd love to hear her notes on the original version. Judging from the other comments, I think many would agree with that.

@@Arkryal Dave's voice nosedived in the late 90's, was pretty awful throughout the 2000's, and by Super Collider (2013) was just downright horrendous (so much so that I was cringing, feeling really badly for him, and hoping it'd be his last vocal performance as I didn't see how it could possibly improve). It got surprisingly better with Dystopia though (great album! the best since Youthanasia imo). Haven't heard the latest album.

I remember an interview around when this came out, where Dave said basically that this is what he intended for the song from the word go, but when the original version was released, he didn't know of any singers he felt were right for the other half, so he adjusted the song to the original version. Then, years and years later, he found out about her, and could finally have the song the way he wanted it. She, on the other hand, was delighted to get to perform with one of the legends of metal.

I would love to request an analysis of Megadeth’s In My Darkest Hour. It’s about depression, suicide, and anger and the past 2 years this song has helped me so much. The orchestration is beautifully sad and really ties into the emotions of the song. Distant instrumental intro, ascending then descending in response solos. Fading out guitar into the lyrics. The way Dave delivers the message as if he’s telling a story, then the accents he puts on words like “ha” and then “feel so cold” outdo solo build up and builds and builds and then has this outdo same as intro as if it’s repeating and you’re stuck on this emotional roller coaster. Live in itally 92’ I think? Dave use to play a double neck so you get the 12 string intro. I hate 5DP but coming down music video has a similar affect.

This is a question I can answer as a guitarist, with Megadeth as one of my biggest inspirations. Mastery of a song, by at least my definition, is when I can play it clearly, without any music, backtracks, or click track and without needing to check my fingering position. It's in many ways easier to not need to see your hands to play guitar, because we learn scales by shapes, rather than notes and that shape will always be true anywhere on the neck.

In 1986 Dave Mustaine produced the first album of the band Sanctuary, called Refuge Denied. It introduced the world to one of my favourite metal singers, who you have not featured yet: Warrel Dane. Here is why I think he would fit perfect on this channel: Before his metal career Warrel Dane was trained for five years as an opera singer - and while a natural baritone he used a very broad vocal range from G♯1 to B♭5. But what really makes him special to me is how he could texture and color his voice in a very dramatic and emotional way. If you want to hear his really high notes and banshee-like screams, these are more prevalent on the first two Sanctuary albums. The song "Future Tense" has a music video on KZbin. Otherwise I would recommend stuff from his albums with Nevermore or his fantastic solo album "Praises to the War Machine". For an emotional gut punch there are for example "Brother" or "Dreaming Neon Black" Unfortunately there aren't many good live performances on KZbin, so I would generally go with the album or music video versions, but the recording of the "The Year of the Voyager" concert is just incredible. From that concert I would recommend "The River Dragon Has Come", "The Heart Collector" but especially the last song at the end of a two hour performance, where Warrel puts all that he's got left into an almost nine minute long tour-de-force song.

It took me many weeks to learn the Rust in Peace album. After that I was bushed and went back to my own stuff. This man is a genius ... best since Iommi. A true pioneer. Thanks for this video I love it.

@@sordid_mind I didn’t learn the whole album, just Hangar 18, tornado, Lucretia, five magics and most of Holy Wars. Then we broke up and I went back to my own stuff. However, those riffs are hard and a great work out. Then all of a sudden, after hundreds of attempts, you can play the song. Best way to practice. Have fun!

I am glad you gave us an analysis of a Megadeth song. I do concur with majority of comments regarding the original version as preferrable, but i do understand your choice and your analysis was good as always. If you are going to do another Megadeth song, I would suggest "In My Darkest Hour" from the album "So Far, So Good, ...So What!" or "The Conjuring" on the album "Peace Sells". Dave Mustaine was an original member of Metallica credited on the albums Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightening. Dave Mustaine is a phenomenal guitarist and he is over-looked because he has had some of the best guitarists in the business in his band on lead guitar. Thank you Elizabeth for another fun analysis. I hope to see more Megadeth, or a dip of the toe into Venom, Overkill, Sepultura, Iced Earth, Exodus, Testament, and of course "F'n Slayer!" 🤘🙂🤘

If you want to look into peak hair in Megadeth, you'd want to check out 90s Megadeth with Marty Friedman as the lead guitarist. For an underrated, older Dave Mustaine performance, I'd recommend "Hardest Part of Letting Go...Sealed With A Kiss". If you want to check out some earlier Mustaine vocals, a few of the good ones are "Foreclosure of a Dream", "My Last Words", and "Looking Down the Cross".

As to the hair, coming from an 80's child who grew up with heavy metal, head banging with hair emanating up and down with the head is a way of melding with the music. The origional version was my oldest brother's favorite Megadeth song, but this is the version I had, and this is going to be crazy nostalgic for me. This one for Megadeth done by Elizabeth and not Kirkbeth. I've never heard this version with Cristina Scabbia, only the original studio version. A great Megadeth ballad. Dave Mustaine said this is not a suicide song. When people have a loved one that dies and they end on a bad note, they wish that they could say something to them, so this is a way for the deceased to say something to them before they go. It was my impression of what I would like to say to people if I had three seconds to do a soundbite before I died. I would say to the entire world, to all my friends, 'I love you all. Now I must go.' These are the last words I'll ever speak, and they'll set me free. I don't have to say I'm sorry, I don't have to say I'm going to miss you, I'll wait for you. I'll just say that I loved you all. Good, bad, indifferent, I loved you all."

Glad Elizabeth finally actually covered a Megadeth song, but disappointed it was the remake. I like it in its own way, but the original just has so much more raw emotion and feeling. This more up tempo poppy take on the song just doesn’t do it justice. Also just the fact that the attention was largely on the guest vocalist and not Dave. I respectfully disagree. I think it very much sounds like Dave is "trying hard" instead of just letting the vocals come out of himself. It makes me wonder how many takes he did, because this literally sounds like "the one they decided was good enough" when for some reason he just couldn't do it any better. This is the best example I've ever heard of the difference between "letting it flow" and "trying to get it right."

I would not be surprised if the original was a single take on the vocals, probably one of the first, but THIS version was dozens of takes spliced together by the sound engineer. The reason I wouldn't be surprised is because I'm a sound engineer, and I know what that splicing sounds like, and what vocal takes that NEED splicing sound like.
