1987 I was 17 years old living in the projects in Camden NJ with my family. There was Black dude 2 years older than me who wore a trench coat in the summer; he called himself ‘Stone’. He looked like he was 30 years old. Stone would buy beer. Stone, my buddy Johnie and I would drink the beer in front of an old dry cleaners and play Prince, James Brown, Isley Brothers, the Gap Band and the Ohio Players on a boom box. The cops didn’t bother us because we never caused any trouble. One day while we drinking beer in front of the dry cleaners, Stone played ‘THE CONJURING’. It blew my mind. I didn’t understand what I was hearing but I loved it. Stone let me borrow the Peace Sells album. I’m 54 years old now. Megadeth has been with me through my enlistment in the Marine Corps, my combat tour in Iraq with the Army, my 26 years as a police officer, and two marriages. I fucking love Megadeth.

Megadeth was still very much an underground band going into Peace Sells. If I remember correctly the album was already done when Capitol bought their contract from Combat and remixed it. A few of the original Randy Burns mixes are on the 2004 reissue and KZbin. His version sounds more sparse and raw than the final product and it definitely has the feel of a grimy underground thrash record. Capitol's version is much more polished and definitely shows what they saw in Megadeth, that they could be a huge hit-making metal band.

Peace Sells is my favorite Megadeth album. I love the dark and menacing tone. I definitely prefer the original mix and do not like the remastered version. Man - I am sorry to hear that! But it's good that you were able to find some solace in their music. They bring so much aggression but also personality to it, and of course a lot of this music was coming from a different kind of painful place for Dave, nowhere near the level of where you were at obviously, but I'm sure that because of that there must have been some resonance there too. Back in 1984 I had just graduated high school at 17 in Sacramento, CA. Most of my friends and myself played guitar or drums. Some had gone down to Los Angeles to play in bands or find one. The next year my buddy brought back a few demos or copies of metal tapes. One was Killing is My Business. We had all heard about Megadeth from a pirate radio station called KYDS......which operated at El Camino high school in Sac. The album's production was crap or course, but it absolutely set the bar of what we wanted to hear. The El Dorado Saloon in Carmichael had all the Bay Area metal bands come through and in 1986 Megadeth opened for Kind Diamond. I still have the ticket stub. On that night they were on point and played an awesome set. Pretty sure I saw them again that year there.

Got to keep in mind the time if you weren't around then . In the early to mid 80's you had the 2 cliques , Metal and Punk . Now the Metal guys had no problem with Punk, but the opposite was not true . At least not openly . Then BOOM the Thrash bands hit and people like me being heavily on the Punk side went "Whoa now, hang on..." . Especially this song . I mean it opens with a bass line , in the video dudes are in a pit , which started as a Punk thing , but it's tight as hell, has intricate guitars and arrangement , but then again it has this snotty , sneering vocal singing political lyrics . Hit like a ton of bricks. And in it's own way just like this video it was a miracle of confluence that these 4 guys managed to end up in the same spot at the same time and it was captured on tape. Because you cant take any one of them out of the equation and still have it work.
