I’m so happy we have female rappers like Megan. Her being such a visionary as well as her quirkiness, humbleness, professionalism, resilience & intelligence make her one of the most inspiring & likeable artists in the industry. Hiss and Cobra were something she HAD to do for herself after going through an ordeal like that. I do look up to that aspect of her. I love that Megan used both Tokyo Ghoul and Perfect Blue references in hiss The tv scene where she was watching herself is one of my favorite. And the half and half is to represent Ken Kaneki, s character from the anime Tokyo Ghoul who was tortured so badly despite being such a nice person that he snaps and turns into a ghoul after being attacked by one

I know that everyone isn't into anime, but Tokyo Ghoul is such an integral part of understanding the Hiss visuals & the greater theme/world building of this era. Meg is Kaneki! They both shed their past selves to reclaim their power & autonomy. Throughout the video, there are crimson spider lilies that represent tragedy & imminent death and dark hair vs. white hair references the Meg/Tina Snow/Kaneki (human v ghoul) parallels. Meg is illustrating her comeback story and it's dope to watch 🥹 I think Hiss was meant to be a warning shot to stop messing with her because she won't tolerate disrespect anymore (or take it to the booth so she can send a direct swing)

May I just add, that the part in Cobra, where Meg crawls out of the snake is a potential reference to Orochimaru from Naruto. Megan is an anime geek, and she likes to reference various animes in her work. Also in Hiss, the half black-half white look is a potential reference to Tokyo Ghoul. I believe there are more anime references in the videos, but my knowledge only extands to these two, so the real anime geeks could help me out ^^

I definitely think you're right about that one, it's a pretty eye catching scene in the film and it matches up there a lot better than other possibilities, like security cameras or something which was my first thought. Good for Meg, usually she talks about shonen but Perfect Blue is one of my all time fav films! One of the best horror films of all time for sure. Also, pulling in my anime knowledge for the non-weebs out there: Orochimaru could just be indicative of her being in her villain era, which would match up with the larger snake imagery. But also, Orochimaru's big thing is that he achieved immortality by constantly undergoing rebirth across various bodies, so he still ties into the rebirth stuff. Easily the strongest reference of the bunch. With Tokyo Ghoul, the white and black look is the signature of the protag Kaneki, who's a weird reference here in that his story is all about struggling between his two sides, being half human and half ghoul. But also, he gets his big power up when he stops fighting his ghoul half and accepts his own dark side, which may be the reference here. Might also just be she liked the visuals tho, bc I sure as hell know she's not watching Tokyo Ghoul for the plot LMAO show's pretty but that's about it Perfect Blue, that imagery is associated with MeMania, a stalker/serial killer who's obsessed with the main character Mima. Specifically, it's his shrine to her, where he obsesses over her online. Perfect Blue as a film is about Mima's transition from a super pure and sweet idol to a more mature actress in a prestige drama, so again we have a theme of embracing your dark side and stopping worrying about being a proper good girl anymore. So yeah, Hiss's visuals are very much indicating this as Megan's Good Girl Gone Bad era as far as the anime references go. I'm not sure her image ever really was Good Girl to begin with, but it definitely fits Hiss as a track with how hard she came out swinging.

@@llia_pear LOL I didn't mean it as shade for Megan, Tokyo Ghoul is a popular show for a reason and I've read the entire manga. I was just trying to shade the show itself. The writing in S2 of the show was notoriously hot garbage, and while I read the manga before the :re anime came out, having read it thoroughly convinced me I didn't want to relive it in animation. It's one of those shows that's very much style over substance. Conceptually extremely cool, and the animation is *incredibly* gorgeous, but the actual execution of the writing... leaves room for improvement.

i've liked her music for a while but this new era has really cemented meg as one of my favorite artists. i love this darker, more edgier sound (loved the rock instrumentals on cobra) and as a snake lover the visuals are stunning (even more considering that she's gone independent now, and still has better visuals than a lot of signed artists). to me, it makes sense that she chose snakes a theme, since they're maligned and feared creatures thought to be evil but they actually don't attack unless threatened. can't wait to see what she does next!

10:39 this idea actually seems like a really cool interpretation and matches the snake themed visuals but also has symbolism with the ouroborous who was a snake that is seen consuming its own tail forming a ring representing a loop and rebirth which fits the theme of this new era as Megan is not only now independent as a musical artist but this new era of hers is a sort of soft reboot/redebut on her musical career, though if they do go down this route assuming the four eggs represent four singles I’d think it would be best for them to wait to include this idea at the end of the presumed fourth single as a means to really make everything cohesive though this is just a really deeply interpreted idea on my end LOL 😭

MEGAN IS AN ANIME NERD! The white snake can also be a nod to Sasuke from Naruto as well. The shot with the screens is also a nod to Perfect Blue which is an anime movie that was about a stalker fan being obsessed with and idol and how he puts her in a space where she feels like she’s being constantly watch. As well as the mirror scene where she looks at another version of herself which is also in a seen in perfect blue where the character looks at her idol version of herself. And The last anime reference that I know of is Tokyo ghoul which she has been posting a lot about. Where both sides of her comes together her regular side and her “ghoul” side. And I lock that she used his character because just like Meg both lost members of their family, faced a lot of abuse and pain causing them to bring out a different side of them aka the ghoul and succumbing to it aka Tina Snow.

i mentioned this in the comments of another breakdown but the teflon don bar goes so much harder if you view that bit as a perspective shift to tina snow and view it from that line. (it also really feels like you're meant to take that whole section from the start of her talking about believing fake news up until she enters the door as tina as a perspective shift as she goes from meg to tina to tina/meg to tina again. honestly, really fire way to use the idea of alter egos if that's what she's going for.)

Loved your all insight in this video! I interpreted the white room after the brain to be showing how she is getting bigger and bigger until her environment can’t hold her anymore. I also noticed that the hat she is wearing right before Tina Snow finally emerges out of the door kinda resembles red spider lilies, which foretell death scenes in anime (that one might be a reach, but she also recently posted a picture of the flower online).

Megan is definitely on the pulse right now. I dont like to compare the two because I see no need, but I don't think Nicki was ever really in tune with what people wanted to hear. She makes Ivory Tower rap. Nicki was always "Im better than other women" while it feels like Megan is more like "I am like other women" and that subtle difference is huge. Not to discredit Nicki because it was a different time (the male rappers of her generation have that mindset too) but Megan just gets her audience. The fact that Nicki is unironically slut shaming shows how out of touch she is. Times have changed

Scene 1: Meg is an embryo Scene 2: Meg is a developed child, with other Meg's in the ovaries Scene 3: Meg is about to be born, symbolizing her head poking out through the vagina . . in that same shot, it is in a shape of a brain, meaning that Meg is ALWAYS on their mind. Scene 4: before the Meg in all red shots, show the camera almost coming out of a hole, which one again symbolizes a birth.
