It so doesn't matter. I am an old white guy, and I love this song and Jim Croce. Music transcends race. One of the songs that I play when I feel low is "Keep Your Head to the Sky" by EWF. I love jazz and my favorite jazz pianist is Bill Evans (white) who played on "Kind of Blue" with Miles and all black musicians. Nice post!

I was attending the Glee Club office of Canisius College during orientation week September 6, 1973 when one of the Security guards told me that most the students were listening to the concert and that I should feel free to lock up, which I did, and had the chance to listen to Jim Croce live! It was the best concert of my life. Two weeks later he was gone. RIP Jim Croce! The Baby Boomers loved you as do each new generation!

It's sad he never got the money he deserved and tried so hard to get for his beautiful wife and son. But more than the money, the life he deserved to have with his family and friends. He was about to, willing and able to walk away from the music industry dispute his rising fame and song climbing the charts before his death. What happened to us as Americans that no one no longer and make music and lyrics like the time this man and many other greats came from. I have a charcoal impression of Jim's grave, I got myself, and its framed in my basement. (I live in southeast pa) Everytime I look at it I imagine what could ha e been and remember I'll get a chance to see him again and hear new songs he's made for the lord.

This song in my opinion is really about Jim leaving his Catholic faith for Judaism, a super God? Croces wife was Jewish and he probably converted to please his wife. Jesus was the ultimate lover on a cross and martyr for all mankind, his Father will not be mocked especially about his only Son. Of course I could be wrong and my speculation does not take away my love and prayers for this man.
