little tip- you should use a zigzag stitch when you sew the waistband back on to make sure it stretches how it's supposed to when you're wearing it
@Beeper984 жыл бұрын
To make it simpler, you don't even have to cut the waistband/hem off. Instead, you could fold it up to the length you want it, sew along the bottom of that band, and cut the excess. Ashley (Bestdressed) used that technique in one of her thrift flip videos.

Hey, Megan :) I love your vids. I've been watching you since I was 14, and I'm turning 20 this year lol. As someone that also sews, I just wanted to chime in, and share some tips with you. For sewing stretchy fabric, you're going to want to use a zig zag stitch or some other stitch that can stretch along with the fabric. A straight stitch won't allow the fabric to stretch anymore bc it locks the fabric in place. Also a tip for sewing a smaller elastic onto a larger hem would be to divide the elastic and the hem into four (or more if necessary) parts. You can stretch and sew the elastic so that the four points on the elastic matches up to the four points on the hem. If done correctly, it easily distributes the stitching evenly :)

I just did this following your video! I had to change some of your methods because it wasn't a hoodie and the bottom band wasn't elastic, just somewhat stretchy fabric. I was positive that everything was gonna go wrong and I was just gonna end up with a ruined shirt lol. Ended up pretty much perfect! Did it in about 45 minutes and now I'm wearing this shirt out today after giving it a new lease on life! Gotta go do this to some of my actual hoodies now.

Nice! Thanks for the tip! I was scared to ruin my daughter's sweatshirt, even though I've been sewing for 50 years. Another tip is to go ahead and topstitch after moving the ribbed hem. It will look even more profesh and hold it in place. (Others have mentioned using a zigzag stitch on knits like this for bests results.) Keep on creating!

Any suggestions on tension and length settings? Her tutorials are great but I wish she would explain everything she's using on the machine, like which presser foot, stitch type, tension/stitch length. The simple way she explains certain techniques sometimes just flip a switch, turning difficult projects into a total breeze.If the machine settings were added, I'd be able to use even less brain power, and that's my kinda tutorial!

Quick tip! Instead of having to hold the hoodie down with your chin to pin it in the middle, just fold it in half, that will give you the perfect measurement and then you don't need a third hand because you are already holding the spot you need to pin! Good luck! Keep up the good work!

Imagine the needle is a car. If you put the pins in going ACROSS the road rather than ALONG the road, you can just drive the sewing machine right over them without having to take them out as you go. Much quicker and easier, just take them out after its all sewn

Megan, FYI, if you put your pins in vertically instead of horizontally, you can actually sew right over them! Then you just remove them all after. Adorable project!
