An awesome way to experience India, absolutely. Figuring out how to obtain your own tickets as to not have to rely on shady travel agents and accepting you'll often have to reserve your ticket several days in advance to be sure to get a seat goes a long way towards the awesomeness. But once that has all been rehersed and a certain expertise acquired - it's the only way to go in many ways.

Not just in general. There are some routes where people w/o tickets come into reserved sleeping bogies. And heck we travelled about 12 years ago in the midst of the kumbh from Delhi to Dehradun. The number of illegal travelers was insane. Our class was stuck in two separate bogies and ooof.

The Indian Railway actually made good use of the lockdown, it was never the shortage of funds that stopped us from electrifying the lines, especially looking at the long term savings and considering it is the backbone of the economy. ITs just that the routes are so busy and packed that there is simply very few instances when the railroad is shut down so that upgrade work can be done. With the coming of the lockdown, the Railway immediately mobilized 4+ Bn dollars to start electrification in full swing now that most of the lines were not being used. The Railway should reach its electrification target by 2023. I say that its a stroke of genius really.

As an Indian who has travelled to Mumbai many times I can tell you all human deaths are mostly due to ignorance of people. They either stand/ hang by the opening of the train or attempt to cross the world's busiest railway line. Rail accidents have become very few in the country. Actually the lack of planning to build a good metro/transit system has created this issue. The railway lines are saturated and new services cannot be added. But the people traveling in the trains is already 2-3 times more than the systems capacity. So yeah railways is not be blamed but it always isn't people's fault. I mean you try to catch a morning 8:00 pm train towards SoBo from any suburbs, it's always overcrowded.

Having travelled from Delhi to chennai by train, I can confirm that rail travel in India, was an experience you'll never forget. Both amazing and terrifying at the same time. Edit. As I've stated elsewhere, this was 20+ years ago, I'm aware the system has been massively upgraded since then.

This is thanks mostly to privatisation and massive underfunding by successive Tory governments in anything infrastructure based, especially when it doesn't directly and disproportionally benefit London. Just let the market deal with it! Ignoring the bit where the market does everything to cut every possible corner. Also I find it hilarious how the British rail network is still technically state run... by other states. Germany and France own a huge portion of our rail system by way of owning the private companies that operate most of it. Let's hope the recent announcement of kind of not quite but sort of re-nationalisation is more than words.

Unfortunately many of those fatalities on Indian rail are actually suicides. Tragic. On a brighter note. as others have noted. Travelling on the Indian railways system is an experience. The Indians take much pride in their rail system.

Most of the fatalities are caused by people breaking rules, like not to cross the rail tracks and use the overhead bridge or underground tunnels. But Indians are compulsive rule breakers and disobedience towards authority is in our DNA. Some people pay for it with their lives, it's not the railways fault. Bdw, India also has the largest no of people who die in road accidents every year, and it's for the same reason. People refuse to wear helmets and use seat belts and argue and fight with the cops ( verbally) and a lot of them end up dead.

India is moving forward with conventional high speed rail, dedicated freight corridors and upgrading the conventional network to semi high speed standards (200 km/h) which I think is the prudent way forward. The Hyperloop is a pipe dream and has been debunked multiple times. It is a highly impractical concept and the only department it has improved in since the 1920s are the concept renders.

The Lifeline Express is something I've never heard of but sounds REALLY COOL!!! How do they keep it supplied when it's away on a mission? Where do medical staff stay when not with the train, and what do they do if they have to overnight in situ? Does the train transport patients to more permanent hospitals? FROM hospitals? What's the most complex procedure performed while underway? Can it ride a ferry? I want to know soooo much about something that isn't meant to kill people :D

American inland waterways are very good. That is indeed something we want to emulate here in India. Waterways are still in infancy in India, with massive progress being made recently. There is already a giant network of rivers and canals in India that is being further increased by a project to interlink all the major rivers of the country together. While that might not do wonders for water freight movements, it will lead to a massive decrease in floods and droughts.

Electrification has reached 71% and going by the pace with which it is progressing it will be complete by 2024. there will not be 100% as in few section of lines it is just not feasible to electrify the tracks. Disappointed on no mention of the True Mega project of Indian railway: Dedicated Freight Corridors. Good video. But you missed an important point. British built the Indian railways with Indian Tax Payers' money, at a time when close to 70% of Britian's tax revenue came from India. Huge incentives were paid to British private companies so that Indian tax payers had to pay close to 4 times the cost per mile than US, Canada etc at the same period. One thing the colonialist succeeded into putting into British education system was "all colonies were somewhat equal or somehow Australia or America was more important than India. But Britian's rise for 200 years was funded by India. Indian economy was more than 10 times the US economy in 1820 and British economy was less than 2% of global economy while India's economy was close to 25%
