This movie blew my mind in 1979. I was in the Navy. A bunch of us went to see it at the base theater after getting to port. The story in the book takes place in the 1950's. The story that book was based upon takes place in 401 BCE. That story was the book Anabasis by Xenophon, who was one of the leaders of a group of Greek mercenaries called the Ten Thousand, hired by Cyrus the Younger to help overthrow his brother, Artaxerxes I, the king of Persia. They were betrayed and defeated and had to escape back through Persia trying to get back to Greece. Anabasis follows their flight and battles back through Persia into Anatolia and then along the Black Sea coast back to Greek lands.

This is one of my favorite movies, and Cyrus had a great but scary idea! "Can you dig it!"

I’m SO glad you enjoyed this one. Everything about this movie rocks, and I think it’s getting forgotten as time goes on. CAN YOU DIG IT?

A great movie, based upon Xenophon's Anabasis. The Director's Cut is the weaker version, sadly (added the cartoony elements). Interesting fact, when filming this, gang members wanted to be in it and so they helped the production not have gang fights interfering

Based upon the book 1965 book The Warriors by Sol Yurick, which was loosely based upon Xenophon's Anabasis.

The other version is better. Unfortunately, the comic strips replace live action scenes and some extra dialogue. They also get the history of the Battle of Thermopylae wrong. On the subject of warriors and battles... (If you haven't seen it already) ...You should watch Spartacus: Blood & Sand. ~NOT FOR KIDS! It's utterly brilliant. Do you remember when you used to fantasise about Xena: Warrior Princess? Dreams can come true. 😲😳🥵😏 ~Rest In Peace Andy Whitfield.

Funny thing, I first saw the Warriors when I was young and my father had checked it out and rented it from the video store. We both liked it. Through the years, I recognized it was a classic film. However, it was only after I studied Greek and read Xenophon did I learn the Warriors was, in a way, an adaptation (into the modern world) of the story and from there, I saw even more how great the film was. When I saw the director's cut, I was disappointed with the changes, though I figure if it is what someone sees first, they might like it better than the original.

The scene you're thinking of wasn't about Thermopylae. It was about the retreat of the mercenary Greek Ten Thousand through enemy Persian territory trying to get back to Greece. The movie is based on the book of the same name which was based upon Anabasis by Xenophon. Xenophon was one of leaders of the Ten Thousand. Those events took place in Persia in and after 401BC, about 80 years after the Battle of Thermopylae.

🤔You're right. I'd forgotten about that. 🤤 I stand corrected. 🤗 Every time someone brings up the Spartans in tv or films they always reference Thermopylae. It makes you forget they did tons of other stuff too. I'm not wrong about Spartacus though! 😉☺
