This hurts and discourages solo-developers and small teams who doesn't have money to spend on development.
@JPLAVFX8 сағат бұрын
Whilst I can see the benefit of getting their assets for free, I'm not seeing why solo developers and small teams *need* to use Megascans. If you are producing something with the production values that demand the quality of Megascans assets, $100-$500 for some Megascans packs is going to be a tiny percentage of what you need to spend. If it's going to discourage you, yes, you should be discouraged from using Megascans, because chances are, you're not spending the money to properly optimise your scenes after you dump a ton of highly detailed assets in there, and you're not spending the money to make your bespoke models, animations, effects to the same quality level.
@OverJumpRally3 күн бұрын
I agree on all the points. Some MegaScans should stay free to help with the onboarding, but having all of them free as they were now hurt the perception of other assets being sold. MegaScans should have two tiers: low-poly and up to 2k textures should be free; this way, you can still use them for prototyping and learning. 4-8k and high-poly should be paid, as they would be used for production projects.

I don't agree with Megascans being a "competitor" to other artists selling their assets on FAB. Megascans being free was actually one of the main reasons why so many people are using it. Bodycam, for example, was made by students, and I don't think a lot of students have that much money to spend on a few hundred assets. Having the library that is already there for free and then charging for the new ones that they add regularly would be an ideal situation, but realistically, it won't happen, lol. Thanks for the breakdown, Sensei.

Or they realized they shot themselves in the foot when they made it all free in the first place. How many years will it take them to realize giving all these free games on EGS doesn't matter when the client is so bad compared to Steam no one wants to use it? They sometimes have the wrong priorities. The chances of turning Fortinte into generalized platform are also rather low and it's affecting the future of Unreal (UE6 focusing on Verse language etc.)

I really don’t like the change. Offering Bridge assets for free for 5 years and then charging for them is really just a bait and switch. Everyone who develops in UE5 and has gotten used to creating levels with them now has to pay for the same creations they could use for free just a day ago after the New Year. Also the pricing model is ridiculously steep. $25 for rocks that have been free for the public for half a decade is detached from reality pricing. Very few people are going to pay that, especially when they can’t be previewed in engine. Finally, this is going to heavily slow the amount of new game designers coming into the industry. Let’s not pretend like UE5 is simple to jump in and use for the average person. In fact, I would say the word overwhelming comes to mind when we’re talking about UE5. The simplicity of having Bridge be able to drag and drop a bunch of free assets and trying to then take those free assets and make something cool is the best way for new users to learn many of the world building tools. And that’s basically just going to be gone. My prediction: the fab market place is going to fail majorly, people who already use Bridge will either pirate the assets or only use what they can get for free, and new UE5 users will slow tremendously. Terrible choice by Epic. 0/10

Reading and listening comprehension on the internet is at an all time low. These people that you're talking about, that are already using these assets, are not losing them next year. They get to keep them if they claim them before January. No one is getting bait and switched, you get to literally keep them for free if you're one of the people that has been using them to create levels this whole time. Your whole first paragraph is just wrong. Your point about new people coming into the engine, that's totally valid. They'll have much fewer options now if they come into the Epic/UE ecosystem after the end of this year. That part really sucks.

Another problem is it's nice to download a pallet of assets as you world build and drag and drop trying different things to see how they fit in the environment. Especially for those who will join AFTER 2025 who will not be able to redeem the current asset library for free. Also, can someone answer this question, so you can claim these assets for free on FAB and keep them forever, does that mean you can use them only on UE5 forever? Or will Blender require these assets to be redeemed in it’s own marketplace? My understanding is you have access to the files and the files are compatible with other engines now. I think you make an incredible point. It's a problem on turbosquad when someone makes a highquality asset and doesn't price it at its value and undercuts it instead. It then sets a precedent that that is what the value should be when in reality it's not a sustainable pricing strategy

What I thinkin about this situation - Unreal Engine 3 was paid and it's cost was very big. But after some time thay make 4th engine free but if you make good game and sell this game for good money, you must pay a % to UE devs, so I think, after some time UEngineers will do same thing with fab

@@UnrealSensei this is false information, did you not read the announcement?? everything you have ever used in megascans is yours forever and tied to your epic account and gets ported over to Fab when you sign in. This means that is you put everything in your library no it will carry over just like everything else you used before mass DL. If you're gonna shill for Epic fine, but don't give out false info. There is a script out right now that allows people to add everything automatically and will stop working when everything is ported over to Fab. Why not tell people about that like the rest of the unreal channels? Are you trying to screw over your audience to get in good with Epic or something? WTF dude??
@TheFunDimensionКүн бұрын
This is not an “even field”. Assents cost a shit ton of money. People sell their games for less than an asset pack cost, so it is going to be a big hit for the grand majority of people that can barely pay for a developer team, let alone a solo developer. Check the terms of service, as far as I remember, all the assets you get from the UE store will remain free after the migration, unless there is something I missed or changes have been made.

I think it is reasonable for epic to make free the library of assets they have now for Unreal users, it is after all the reason for our loyalty. I remember this moment when the news came out that epic is opening up the megascan library for their users. I was amazed and delighted by this move by the company then, telling everyone how awesome epics are, feeling sincere gratitude every time I occasionally accessed the megascans library. Now I'm going to have to change my mind, too bad.

All I ask from FAB is a way to sort by best selling or by rating. I love UE5 but the marketplace has terrible sorting.

My only question is: seeing from the way they phrased their tweets, it seems new megascans will drop with the FAB launch, and only THESE will be free, not all megascans from the current Quixel library. What happens with the megascans that are currently available on Quixel for free? Am I missing something?

Is it possible to summarise the used assets in the UnrealSensei Academy course (I know it is a lot of them) ? Then we need to download just those to follow you through the course if somebody has already started it, but can not end the learning curve until next year.
@Garnish14122 күн бұрын
IMO as long as the current megascans asset remains free is eough. It is such a bold movement to make megascans free in the first place. Moreover the only way for unreal to make money now is revenue share from big studios only. Since unreal marketplace is a silent grave, most of the assets have 0 reviews😅. So it is understandable that they want to make more small money from the marketplace by balancing the market itself
@D0d_2 күн бұрын
Pretty sad news tbh. Would've been great to keep it free for non-commercial users. I've been using Megascans for years on both Blender and Unreal and it's been a great tool to promote some of my music. The incentive to create and learn will probably be lost if everyone has to pay for each and everyone of them. One could argue that such high quality assets being free was quite surprising to begin with.
@userunknownxx12 күн бұрын
I have never used megascans but obviously its sad that its no longer free. However, I see the merging of all different sites as a great way to give consumers a more streamlined experience where they will be able to find what they are looking for a lot easier.

You say its free for every 3D programs and then you say its no longer free for Unreal? now someone clarify me in simple terms.. meaning if I add all the assets to my epic account now.. will I have to download and keep them to use it later or since I added its free forever? or until Epic store is shut?

I don't think it follows. Rather they want to generate additional revenue from an asset marketplace instead of relying on UE alone. It should incentivize more artists tom come forward with new assets - raising the quality for everyone.
